Barney Frank Talks: The Inauguration, the Economy, and LGBT Issues

On the day before Obama's inauguration, we were able to visit Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) in his Capitol Hill apartment. Because I was having some problems with the video, I wasn't able to upload it until now.

The video is in three parts. Watch it, AFTER THE JUMP...

In the first clip, Corey Johnson talks to Frank about the present and past inaugurations. Says Frank of Obama and the Democrats: "I think people are very discouraged by the Bush administration and the cavalry has arrived to rescue us."

In the second, they discuss the economy. Says Frank: "There's never in my experience been a sharper divide between the political and economic opinions of the average citizen in this country and those of the small number of people at the top of the pyramid. And the people at the top of the pyramid better understand that the great bulk of Americans are no longer licensing them to go and do what they think is necessary to provide assistance to these top institutions."

In the third clip, Frank discusses LGBT issues and the bills related to them: Says Frank: "I believe by the end of this Congress, two years from now, we will have repealed 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell', we will have passed a fully-inclusive hate crimes bill, and we will very probably have passed a fully-inclusive ENDA, and we will also begin...starting the process of getting recognition of ... partner benefits for federal employees. That's probably as far as we're going to be able to go politically right now in the marriage area." He also talks about media exposure and his public persona.

  1. He's awfully optimistic. I think it is much more likely we'll get an ENDA and hate crimes bill without "gender identity." And the Obama administration's confused and contradictory statements on DADT makes them look ever more like the Clintonistas in 1993. Not a good sign at all.

  4. Derek Washington,

I couldn't agree more. He was in charge of the house financial service committee while the economy was beginning it's decline. He was also involved romantically with a Fannie Mae executive and also received $40,000.00 in campaign contributions from them since 1989. It seems the Dems are as full of scandal lately as the Repugs were. First the treasury secretary with back taxes and now Tom Daschle. On the news I keep hearing the term, limousine liberal. I hope this is not going to be the case for them.

  5. And the reason why we'll hear that term is that the media is run by Republican-run corporations and "Concern" trolls like you, dea.

  6. Nice try at pinning the 8 YEARS OF FAILURE of President Low Normal and a Republican Congress on Barney Frank.

Never knew he had such power.

    (Smarter trolls please.)

  8. David,

Please have some common sense. I don't think that the media is run by rebulican corporations or concern trolls. I mean you have MSNBC, CNN, and other media outlets that are left leaning such as Huffington Post.

I didn't say I was pinning it on him. It's everyone's fault in Washington. Dems and Repugs. I am saying he was on a committee that oversaw government finance and should share some responsiblity.

  9. Barney is smart. Sunday morning and it looks effortless, though he's clearly exhausted. Always love him. I hope the history revisers here listen to what he says about Clinton and DADT!

And Corey is smart too. And hot!

  10. I just love Barney, but, while he is now looking so smart and on top of this debacle, why was he not doing this two years ago, its not as if he didn't know. Even I knew that this hosuing market was over heated and going to burst.

  13. I have a definite bias being from Massachusetts, but I love Barney Frank. He, and the other cast of characters that have made up the Massachusetts delegation, have always sought to bring the concept of the commonwealth to the rest of the country while supporting the home folk. I've never lived in his district, but Frank has worked tirelessly to support his constituency, which is why he has been priviledged to serve as a representative for over 20 years.

I always look forward to his early morning interviews on NPR, a time at which he does not suffer fools (or silly questions) gladly.
