Pastor Rick Warren Evades Prop 8 Conflict in Talker Cancellation

Pastor Rick Warren canceled an Easter Sunday appearance on This Week with Geroge Stephanopolous “moments before the scheduled interview." Stephanopolous explained Warren was “sick with exhaustion.”

Warren The appearance would have likely forced Warren to confront his conflicting statements about Proposition 8 and same-sex marriage. Last week, Warren told Larry King: "You know, Larry, there was a story within a story that never got told. In the first place, I am not an anti-gay or anti-gay marriage activist. I never have been, never will be. During the whole Proposition 8 thing, I never once went to a meeting, never once issued a statement, never -- never once even gave an endorsement in the two years Prop 8 was going."

Religious right wing groups were flummoxed by the statement. Said Wendy Wright, president of Cooncerned Women for America: "Whether he supports Proposition 8 now, after the fact, is overshadowed by the bizarre claim that he did not say what the evidence so clearly proves he said."

What Wright refers to is a video Warren posted shortly before the election, in which he clearly expressed support for Proposition 8 and urged voters to do the same.

  1. The only thing missing from Rick Warren's timeline is a scandal in which he's found to have had one or more homosexual trysts, inappropriate sexual contact with minors, and/or a history of closeted drug abuse.

Some shady people are able to evade karma for a while... but not forever.

  3. That's hilarious that even his right wing buddies are even calling him a liar. Where was this statement about not being anti gay when there was a huge uproar about him being at the inauguration.

  4. I'm sure his handlers are coming up with a strategy to get him out of this - and no doubt it will be anti-gay. Then again, maybe he finally realized the tide is turning and wanted to get ahead of the wave - one could hope...

  5. This maybe a rumor but I was told that Rick Warren is sick with remorse and decided to change his ways, therefore he is busy with Ted Haggard to create a new church, they will call it the "Saddlefront church" and Larry Craig will be their political adviser.
There are problems in paradise too, Joseph sued Mary for divorce on the grounds of adultery, he has DNA to prove he's not the father of Jesus, unfortunately his lawyer Ken Starr is in hell now.

Look at the bright side of prop8, Iowa and Vermont and more states will follow.

  6. I understand why he canceled. Being a liar and an opportunist can really get you down.

  7. A brilliant suggestion from Paul Krugman (via Americablog):
A missed opportunity on This Week
So I was all ready to talk about Rick Warren on today’s panel, only to learn that he had cancelled out at the last minute. The show replaced him with pirates, plus an extended roundtable. But I think they should have done what the British show Have I Got News For You did when a guest failed to show: they replaced him with a tub of lard, addressed throughout the show as the Rt. Hon. Tub of Lard. http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/12/a-missed-opportunity-on-this-week/

WHO else besides celebrities EVER get "exhausted"??

  9. "For 5,000 years Marriage has been accepted as being between ONE MAN and ONE WOMAN by all cultures and all religions!" This is a blatantly and and outright LIE!! Except for the USA where women became less then full Chattel with the passing in 1920 of the 19th Amendment - which prohibited excluding Women from Voting (It gave women the right to vote).. before that women in the USA were for the most part seen only as propagating machine and home keepers (Pregnant and in the Kitchen)and that attitude still persists in many parts of the world today and is supported by the major religion of Islam! Listening to Rick Warren one would think that women were equal to men and had all the rights as men!! Clearly he is mistaken and clearly he supported Prop 8 PRIOR to the election and once this clip is played in front of him he will be shown to be the HYPOCRITE he and his ilk are!!!!!!!!

  12. It's funny how this guy thinks that any of are insane or idiotic enough to believe anything he says. He's a hate monger, just like the rest of his clan, and to even listen to anything he says is a waste of time.

  13. I'm providing this to you in an effort to clarify statements made by Pastor Rick Warren during his April 6th appearance on CNN "Larry King Live." Several comments he made during that interview have caused confusion which I would like to clarify on his behalf as media representative for Saddleback Church.

Throughout his pastoral ministry spanning nearly 30 years, Dr. Warren has remained committed to the biblical definition of marriage as between one man and one woman, for life -- a position held by most fellow Evangelical pastors. He has further stressed that for 5,000 years, EVERY culture and EVERY religion has maintained this worldview.

When Dr. Warren told Larry King that he never campaigned for California's Proposition 8, he was referring to not participating in the official two-year organized advocacy effort specific to the ballot initiative in that state, based on his focus and leadership on other compassion issues. Because he's a pastor, not an activist, in response to inquiries from church members, he issued an email and video message to his congregation days before the election confirming where he and Saddleback Church stood on this issue.

During the King interview, Dr. Warren also referenced a letter of apology that he sent to gay leaders whom he knew personally. However, that mea culpa was not with respect to his statements or position on Proposition 8 nor the biblical worldview on marriage. Rather, he apologized for his comments in an earlier Beliefnet interview expressing his concern about expanding or redefining the definition of marriage beyond a husband-wife relationship, during which he unintentionally and regrettably gave the impression that consensual adult same sex relationships were equivalent to incest or pedophilia.
