The Pope's Kindly Suggestions for a New World Order

Pope-Benedict-at-his-election Pope Benedict XVI is proposing a new world political body that would supersede the United Nations. Unlike most of Hollywood and perhaps unlike himself, he would want this organization to have "real teeth."

This body would give more aid to those in need, would enhance trade unions and would focus on an economy driven by the desire to do good as well as make money.

Of course, there is no place for birth control, abortion or marriage equality.

Fittingly, the Pope observed, "As society becomes ever more globalized, it makes us neighbors but does not make us brothers."

(Note: Post title changed because apparently some feared the Pope was actually attempting to rule the world himself.)

  5. The thread title is misleading

Far be it from me to defend snake oil salesman, hitler youth member , bitch in a dress and red slippers.........BUT

What the nazi rat is proposing is nothing do with "The pope....rule the world."

The body proposed would have a huge amount of more influence on world economics from a leftist pro union, pro poor, pro working average joes, anti oligarchy stand point.

We are in the 21st century and do need to move towards a more united earth. The current nation state system is feudal dark ages esque.

Eugene Robinson's op ed in WAPO is a must read. He talks about how this neanderthal (my description) on social issues is far more liberal economicaly than obama. That it could be a wake up call to Obama to be crticized in their meeting this week from the left economicaly by this far right social throw back. Maybe Obama can be pushed from the safe center to a more left economic stand.

Ratzinger is a rat, but economicaly and a more united human family he might just by chance/ chaotic ordered dance of Universe have a positive leftist economic influence on Obama

Robinson's article also mentions how american catholics claim to be more catholic than the pope on economics because they are so weded to right wing repub coprorate domination

  7. That's one of Benedict XVI's great failings as a Catholic, a Christian and human being: stating that globalization makes us neighbors, but not brothers undercuts the belief, in Christianity, that we are already all brothers. That he couldn't articulate that this phenomenon doesn't make us BEHAVE like we're brothers, or better than that, is just another indication that they elected the wrong man for this important position in the worlds of politics and religion.

  9. Your anti-Catholic stance is quite obvious. I wonder if you actually read the document in question. It is incredibly left-leaning. You might even find that you agree with aspects of it.

I disagree with the Pope on many things, but I can see what he is trying to say in this document. He is focused on the inter-connectedness of all humanity, as well as our responsibility for each other. Is it a viable option? No, not really. Is it a noble vision? Yes, absolutely.

As long as people with a voice in society, like you, continue to focus only on the areas in which you disagree, no real progress will ever be made.

    That's quite sad.

  10. Hate to disagree with you JIMMYBOY but Obama will never move to the left, shich is why we are on the back burner. If not for Americans the Vatican would be broke, now with the Church here going broke from drop in attendance and payoff money the Pope is trying to get a back door to more funds and power.

  12. Further, nowhere in the encyclical does the Pope propose himself as either the ruler of the world or of the economic body he proposes. Your headline is misleading and shows your personal bias.

Frankly, I expect better from you.

  13. The thread title really pisses me off

  14. This Pope craves media attention.
Haven't you noticed that whenever the Vatican sinks below the radar screen he immediately finds some way to get back into the headlines, even if it's some ridiculous gimmick like a Catholic U.N.
I exhort, I pray you all to just ignore him.
    He wants your attention.
    Refuse to be drawn in.
Ignoring him will not make him go away, but it will definitely blunt his purpose.

  16. David: I don't mean to imply the Pope himself wants to rule the world (the title is humorous); it's literally a plan for "ruling" the world a la the United Nations.

As for anti-Catholicism, I guess I should do a better job of concealing my core disagreement with a religion whose literally holier-than-thou leader explicitly believes I am a sinner who will go to hell and who should not be able to enjoy marriage or be allowed to use a rubber while I'm alive on this earth.

    I'm not anti-Catholic, I'm anti-anyone who's anti-me.

Frankly, I expect better from Catholics.

But yes, his proposal does have some left-leaning aspects; the Church has been anti-war and of course is much more concerned with the welfare of the poor than quite a few liberals I know, I will give you that.

Thanks for the comments — Matt

  17. Religion ruled the world once already. The Dark Ages, aptly named.

  18. PEOPLE - READ THE DOCUMENT!

It does NOT say that the Pope should rule the world.

It is about economic responsibility, not increased power for the Papacy. It says that profit should not be pursued for the sake of profit, at the expense of our humanity.

Do you really all disagree with that? Seriously?

Are you all incapable of admitting that even someone with whom you disagree on most issues can, occasionally say something with which you do agree?

Too many on here are being overcome by their anti-Catholic hatred and paying no attention to facts!

  19. I'm a former Catholic and I usually refer to Pope EddieMunster as "The Rat," after his given name of Ratzinger. I have made much sport of political Catholicism since leaving the church 20 years ago for UUism. So it really hurts to say this, but amid his usual totalitarian rhetoric in the encyclical (which I read), The Rat makes one good point. The fetishistic pursuit of profit at all costs that is baked into the DNA of modern capitalism is leading the world into serious trouble in many arenas, such as the environment.

Having said that, I don't trust the twisted old queen's motives any more than I would trust a wolverine's motives toward an injured rabbit. If he focuses some attention on global economic reform, however, I'll listen.

  20. golly, why would we want to be anti-catholic David? Sorry, but you can choose to believe in a Jewish Zombie Cannibal Savior, but NO ONE has to, nor do they have to respect such outdated notions. Religion is stupid, breeds violence and hatred and has created a divisive world order. I'll stick to science, thanks. It's unbelievable to me to see catholic apologists on a GAY website. Disgusting.

  25. Matt,

    Thank you for your comments.

This Pope generally makes me ill every time he opens his mouth. I do believe in giving credit where its due, though. He makes some good points in this encyclical.

I'm as bothered by the negativity out of Rome, and other religious centers, as anyone else. I just hate to see us perpetuate it. We have to find something on which we agree if we ever expect to progress in the areas we don't.
