State Dept. Contractors Exposed for Hazing in Afghanistan

Check out this report on military contractors hired as security for the State Dept. over in Afghanistan and their elaborate sexual hazing rituals which involve pissing on one another, doing shots of alcohol from one another's butt cracks, eating from said ass cracks, getting naked with one another, and simulating anal sex.

Of course gays can't be anywhere near the military because "it would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline."

What's wrong with this picture?

Watch the report, AFTER THE JUMP...

  1. when cheney/bush have no sense of decency, why should anyone expect that contractors should?

  2. I understand being upset over the DADT/clear homosexual activity going on anyway aspect.

But the hazing is no big deal to me. Anyone who has been on an athletic team knows that this is pretty much what goes on whenever the freshmen come in...and, like it or not, it is a bonding experience.

  3. And they throw out/don't let serve a person of the integrity of Lieu. Choi ? Where is the outrage ?

  4. Military hazing occurs all the time: the shenanigans that occur on Navy ships when they cross the equator is a pretty well known tradition, one that apparently extends back at least to the early 1800s.

  5. Maybe this is why they don't allow gays in the military. The hazing rituals are supposed to be humiliating and difficult. Maybe they think gay people would enjoy it too much?

  6. Why in the world are you drawing parallels with pissing on someone and eating food out of someone's ass with being gay in the military? I get your irony but we don't need to associate these images with DADT.

  7. Note that these are "contractors" a.k.a. mercenaries and not regular forces.

  8. Enjoy it more? Enjoy it more than these guys? That's an insult. And there's no question why Bush/Cheney allowed this. The question is why Obama is allowing it to continue by renewing the contract.

  9. Unless they are being hurt (which it looks like a fun party to me) why is Andy jumping on the bandwagon with this.

    Yes very gayish behavior.
But I thought we support that type of thing.

  10. It's absurd that private contractors are hired to guard our embassies at great cost. US Marines could do it better and at lower cost to the taxpayers. We are handing over our national defense to mercenaries.

  11. For the past few months british soldiers have been returning in coffins from that war every day, not a day passes now without news of more deaths in battle.

Public opinion in the UK is shifting very strongly against this war. I suspect that the same may be true of our allies in the US for similar reasons.

These type of antics by "contractors" involved in the same war will frankly turn more people against the whole thing. Whatever the tradition of hazing in the US military/colleges, it is not viewed in the same way in the UK and when reported over here it appears sleezy and reminicent of the photos from the Iraqi prisons.

The whole thing seems to have decended into a bully culture with bizzare sexual overtones.

If this is what these wars have decended into (especially the involvement of Afgan citizens) then it is time to bring a halt to the whole thing.

It is becoming very hard to justify this war to our publics in both the US and UK for all kind of reasons. This type of "recreation" by "contractors" is just another one.

  12. Hazing like this will always happen - I think it's impractical to insist that it 'completely stop.' However, the role of superiors is to set and enforce guidelines to keep it from going too far (as it sometimes does).

As weird and homoerotic as hazing is, I don't think it's something standing in the way of ending dadt. I was hazed - sanely - on joining an organization, and everyone knew I was gay at the time, and no one had a problem with me doing the same naked craziness that all the straight guys were doing. It was kind of fun, and I didn't get a boner and immediately try to fuck everyone and ruin the whole experience.

  13. military contractors

    has generally meant blackwater

Anyone know for sure if that is who they are?

    Posted by: jimmyboyo | Sep 2, 2009 10:40:01 AM

  14. Military contractors can have their own hiring policies. They often hire foreigners. They are not bound by DADT, but given that they are mostly ex-military it is unlikely they would look favorably on gay recruits.

  15. People are calling this "Lord Of The Flies" behavior. Maybe "Commander Of The Fleas"?

  16. What do you expect from a company called "Wackenhut"?

    Posted by: Kevinvt | Sep 2, 2009 11:36:50 AM

  17. I do think it is related to DADT. Many contracts used to be in the military where being openly gay is forbidden. Now we learn that homoerotic hazing rituals are alright once they become contractors and it is a bonding experience. Too many people on this site seem to condone hazing which abuses power to get people to do things that they would not do otherwise. There are Hooters but who ever heard of Cheeks where you can drink all the beer and eat all those chips with that special seasoning.

  18. Yeah.

Getting naked and simulating anal sex will certainly convince these socially conservative Middle Easterners that white people aren't "weird" and "perverted." To say nothing of the ass pyramid...

    (rolls eyes)

I'm sure that'll really win the hearts and minds of the deeply religious types who wear beekeeper suits in 100 degree heat.

  19. I too have most of my objection on this one based on the fact that Bush/Cheney privatized war and so there is no consequence to this behavior. They won't lose their contract if they're still the cheapest bid or the favored bid due to lobbyist work/DC connections.

Hazing is stupid, but men have been doing it...well, pretty much forever. But always in secret and hush hush. This kind of stuff leaking...should the story explode on cable news, expect to see the men featured in those ridiculous photos on Gawker trotting out their wives and kids to insist on their heteronormative status! Lame.

  20. The average salary for one of these "contractors" is around $110,000 plus perks like extra pay for working in a hazardous war-zone, etc., overtime, discounts on airline flights and sometimes chartered planes to bring them in and out. Now, one poster here made the idiotic comment that "maybe this is why they don't allow gays in the military", etc. @Sparky, either you are straight and stupid or, worse, you are gay and stupid. There's a couple of words that explain why "they" don't allow gays in the military: ignorance and bigotry.

  21. Another prime example of our hard earned tax dollars at work. War is Waste.

  22. Mercenaries are always a very bad sign of a countries direction. Always.

  23. This just makes westerners look hedonistic, amoral, decadent, undisciplined, and weak.

I don't get hazing. It is not funny or clever. It is dark and just another reason to loathe humanity.

I suppose these guys look at it as making fun of gays. Their claim would be "Oh hell no, we ain't no fags. We're just acting crazy, acting stupid..."

They are not attracted to one another. They are feeding off each other's primal stupidity and bottom-of-the-barrel mentality.

  24. Wow --- as always it seems the Towleroad self-rightous prigs are out in full force... those guys look like they are having a good time --- nothing that does not go on everywhere there are 20somethings.

I assume this is off time.

I also assume this is being reported on to make America and the Obama Administration look bad.

If one of these guys was force to give head or got raped that is bad.

Goofing off and drinking vodka from another dude's crack ... that is fun.

Even the pissing stuff --- nobody was hurt and I am sure it was in jest.

You all sound like Right Wingers with your handwringing over this.

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO elitist anti-straight gay people.

    Posted by: Dude | Sep 2, 2009 5:12:32 PM

  25. Went over to the Gawker site --- some of those guys are damn buff and hot exhibitionists.

You all sound constipated --- you know those men might be gay / bi / straight / gay friendly .... all drawn to the money ... you know because they may be poor unlike the affluenza that Towleroad readers tend to suffer under.

They may also be gay or bi guys who want to serve - but could not do so openly in the military.

You are all making HUGE biased assumptions.

The Elitist What About ME Commentary is repulsive.
