Demonstrators in Portland and Bangor, Maine protested the Catholic church's involvement in the passage of Question 1 on Sunday morning. Portland residents took their grievances to the street in front of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
Catholic contributions to the anti-gay campaign totaled at least $550,000...

when churches start funding political movements, shouldn't they lose their tax-exempt status?

They should, but they won't.

Let's not forget to mention in the same breath that the RCC closed Maine's oldest parish for lack of funds.
Is their mission to provide minister to people's spirituality or to lobby elections?

All I know is that $550,00 could've gone a long way helping folks who lost their jobs and are struggling, homeless people who need shelter from the Maine winter, and recovery programs for young people who struggle with substance abuse.
I know I'm tilting at windmills here, but at a time when the Catholic church is closing parishes around the country this seems to be an irresponsible use of much needed money.

Can someone please tell me what happened to separation of church and state? As far as I can tell, ministries have long ago given up their tax-exempt status.

time to stop contributing to churches that turn around and use the money to marginalize us. only idiots do that kind of thing. when the church doesn't have money to pay their bills they may rethink spending for this purpose.

Jerzee Mike, I completely agree. And it's not windmills - there are many parishoners that are leaving churches because of these tactics.

@ Fred: What would lead you to believe thast churches lost their tax exempt status long ago...?
Can someone please tell me why ANY gay person would still be contributing to churches? You might as well send your money directly to the RNC or NOM.

Organized religion=DEATH.

What was that about again?
... ... I was distracted by Andrew Bossie's God-given hotness ...

Ryan,
Don't generalize. There are pro-gay churches. Seems like you should try one.

More mutterings toward people who can't hear you because their heads are stuck up some kid-didler's ass. You'd get a much better response by setting up a table outside the church, and selling indulgences in exchange for votes.

With all due respect to Patrick:
There are pro-gay congregations, but they still (must) give money to their national and international daddies who mostly turn around and use some of it to take away our rights. Think of the international Anglican communion (?) as an example.
When we stop dressing their hair, designing their clothing and the interiors of their houses, making movies, music, and money for them, they'll give us equality. We simply must stop funding the oppressors if we ever expect to have justice -- wherever the oppressor lives (whether in Rome, Canterbury or anywhere else).

OK, first there was NO immaculate conception, got it? Anyone who believes that is already functioning from a deficit of reason and intellect.
Secondly, Andrew Bossee should be permitted to marry anyone he wants -- beautiful and articulate (compare to Bishop Malone - oooog)
Thirdly, in Maine as in California, people of justice and humanity should stop attending these churches, giving them money, and making excuses for their blatant anti-Chrisian rhetoric and actions. The next time Matthew chapter 25 comes up in the lectionary there will be no memory of "the least of these, my brothers," but we'll still be around to have a little talk with Jesus on Judgement Day about what happened in CA in 2008 and Maine in 2009.
