Pepsi Sponsors Murder Music Singer Beenie Man in Uganda

In Uganda, where the "kill gays" bill is pending, Pepsi recently sponsored a concert by murder music singer Beenie Man, Box Turtle Bulletin reports:

Beenie "The King of Dancehall stuck a sword of words into gay people through singing and talking. 'In my family, we don’t have any gay person but if you’re gay, my brother that’s not my fault,' he said as he performed his song Mi Nah Wallah, in which he says he would like to cut the throats of all gay men. George Bush and Bin Laden were also at the receiving end of the Jamaican’s wrath calling on the audience to say 'murderer' as he sang about the pair’s warfare."

The Pepsi-sponsored concert also had a promotional tie-in with Toyota.

In related news, the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center has condemned a recent Grammy nomination for murder music singer Buju Banton. Said public affairs officer Jim Key: "We’re shocked that Buju Banton, a singer with a long record of performing a song that glorifies the murder of gay people, would be honored with a Grammy nomination, regardless of the artistic merit of any of his work...Throughout his career, Banton has performed music that promotes a culture of violence against lesbian and gay people; he sings in ‘Boom, Bye Bye’ that ‘faggots get up and run’ when he comes, that ‘they have to die,’ and that he will shoot them in the head or ‘burn them up bad.’ He is completely unrepentant, refuses to stop performing the song.”

  4. I'm pretty sure that nasty disgusting piece of shit Boom Bye Bye also promotes the idea that Lesbians just need a good raping from behind with his "peg", if you read the lyrics. Seriously - someone take this guy out, it's all he deserves.

  6. This is truly disgusting. Please write to the Grammy Foundation!

Nominating Buju Banton, a singer who advocates the murder of an entire group of people, for this prestigious award is not only thoughtless but celebrates his bloodthirsty views.

If his nomination is not withdrawn, I will definitely not be watching this years Grammys.

  7. Is this Pepsi or the Ugandan Pepsi distributor?

  8. I called the Pepsi number earlier today, was transferred to customer relations, and told the woman about the event, concerns, etc. She seemed taken aback by what I told her. Her response was that they usually aren't aware of what's happening in such a far away place.

She then said thanks for telling her and she would immediately report it to her executives. I'd urge everyone else to call, make sure their aware, and ask for Pepsi to make a statement. The more voices they hear, the better.

  9. I received the following email from Dave DeCecco in PepsiCo Media Relations:

Thanks for contacting us and giving us a chance to respond. We just wanted you to know that, much like you, we are appalled by the performer’s lyrics and find them repugnant. Our bottling partner in Uganda was not aware of the performer's views and never would have sponsored the concert with this knowledge. Moving forward, we will work closely with our bottling partners to be more vigilant about the events associated with our brands.

  10. Thank you Pepsi for ensuring us that Beenie Man will not receive your attention! You have always been a true asset to our lgbt events in our community! Mr. DeCecco thank you for your email to kevin whom shared it with us!

Grammy step up! you know this is wrong! Enough said!

We know you're on it. Love you in all the pride parades too. Thank you for keeping your bottling parners informed. I am sure that takes time but it is very much appreciated. thanks CB

  14. Andy, shouldn't the nomination of Buju Banton be reported in a post on it's own? I can't believe there isn't a bigger outcry over this! GLAAD should definitely request the withdrawal of his nomination, as just the nomination is condoning violence against the LGBT community. Sick sad world ...

    Rasbert Turner, STAR Writer
A man who the St Catherine South police claim smashed several windows and doors after he accused his male companion of being unfaithful, has been charged with malicious destruction of property.

Reports reaching THE WEEKEND STAR are that on December 3 about 5:20 a.m., the suspect went to his home where an argument developed after he accused the other man of being unfaithful to him.

Even though they lived together, he was refused entry to the house. It is alleged that he became enraged and pelted the house with stones, police said.

Damage to the property is estimated at $100,000. The man will remain in custody pending his appearance in court.

Wants his guy to care for him at home
    Saturday, December 12, 2009
CLAUDE Pryce, the man who was violently blinded by his male lover, again pleaded with the court to release his companion, so that he could come home and care for him.
However, his request was again denied when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
Pryce, who lost his sight after his eyes were gouged out by his 32-year-old partner, Arthur McTaggart, on November 22, told Resident Magistrate Sonia Bertram-Linton that since the incident it has been very hard for him to cope and, as a result, needed McTaggart's help at home.
Resident Magistrate Bertram-Linton told Pryce, during the start of the preliminary enquiry, that she could not throw out the case despite Pryce's passionate plea for McTaggart's release.
McTaggart, who is charged with unlawful wounding and assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, was further remanded in custody and is to return to court on January 7.
According to the police, the two were involved in a fight at their Calabar Mews, St Andrew apartment when the accused used his fingers to gouge out Pryce's eyes.
The fight was reportedly as a result of Pryce's failure to sleep at the house on the previous night.
Pryce was admitted for surgery at the University Hospital of the West Indies, while McTaggart turned himself in at the Half-Way-Tree Police Station.

  23. Every man is entitled to his opinion. That's what "America" is about. Now that gays are offended, we should all bridle our tongues. I honestly think that every one, including gays, lesbians and the rest of us need to get a grip. try spreading some love. Gays want respect but are not willing to give it. You feel your owed something. We owe you nothing. Beenie Man nor Buju Banton.
