Watch: Coakley's Closer and Nutty Teabaggers for Brown

Coakleyad

Martha Coakley's last ad before the special election tomorrow. But will this pep rally be enough? Let's hope so. Also, a nutty bonus clip (via phb) of a teabagger ad for Brown that must be seen to be believed.

Doesn't look good for Democrats. Not good at all.

And a programming note: If you're seeing ads on the site for Scott Brown they're likely contextual Google ads that are nearly impossible to block. Apologies to those of you who've written in expressing your disbelief.

  1. do you really still need the 'i approved this message' tagline if it's a video of the President extolling your virtues?

  2. Tony: If you were a candidate and someone produced a message of Bush extolling your virtues, you'd sure as hell (not) want an "I approved" tagline on that. That's why they exist ... so people know they're legit.

  3. Well, that was a big mistake. They're assuming the baggers can read.

  4. Although I still hope that homophobe Scott Brown loses, this is largely a disaster of the Democrats' own making.

Of course, the White House will learn the wrong lesson here. Instead of getting tough and actually getting to work on fulfilling some of these campaign promises, they'll retreat even further into timidity. Indecisive as he is, Obama will probably offer to give the Republicans everything they want on health care, climate change, gay rights, immigration, and tax cuts. And even after all the demoralizing and humiliating compromises, the GOP will still vote against his proposals. Because the Republicans don't care about legislating or any of that. They just want to get back into power so they can rake in the dough.

  5. argghhhh. we'll all be living under Republican rule in a very short time. the only thing the Mayan's left out in their TRUE predictions for 2012, is the fact that the USA Republicans will take all 3 branches of the government again, thus bringing the entire world to an end.

the only upside is i probably won't make it that long.

  6. I'm sorry, but more intelligent language is escaping me at the moment: WTF Massachusetts???

Can anyone help explain why this is even a contest, let alone one that the Democrats might lose?

    Posted by: E. | Jan 18, 2010 7:11:38 PM

  7. John, you forgot one other thing. So they can fuck who they want (other than their wives) while denying gay americans the right to love who we want. Do as they say, not as they do.

  8. What's the music on the BROWN PSA? I gotta KNOW. Also, it's just a matter of time before the scandal Scott Brown and I have is national news. Dam I want to make a scandal with that Man! REAL BAD!

  9. The "Tea Bagger's For Brown" ad will be very, very effective. What these folks have on their side is a profound understanding of populist language and how to use it. It makes no difference neither that they are accurate nor even honest. What will make a difference is that they know how to cast themselves into the role of being victimized by the larger culture. This will win every time. It is high time that the progressive side learn this very simple and fundamental lesson and start to tell their story in these terms. What with the Banksters, and the insurance industry and the power of corporate "personhood" , wouldn't you think we have enough to write a compelling story?

    Posted by: Will | Jan 18, 2010 7:21:44 PM

  10. Right on JOHN, too sadly true.

    Posted by: David R. | Jan 18, 2010 7:39:59 PM

  11. Wow, that ad sums it up, and we get the leaders we deserve. Obama and the Dems a tyrannical government? As if. The weak-willed Dems couldn't orchestrate a tyranny in a million years. And if Brown wins they'll become even more wishy-washy. One can never underestimate the right wing's ability to motivate American idiots to get out and vote.

  12. Hopefully the smart people of Massachusetts will elect scott Brown tomorrow. Obama, Pelosi and Reid are failures. By the way, you forgot to play all of Obama's speech where he forgets the name of John Kerry and the name of the state he's in. He's so scared that Coakley has just ruined his healthcare. With complete control in DC he can't pass anything not even for gays. Bye Bye

  13. The sadness is this; universal health care was Ted Kennedy's life force. If Brown wins his seat, he has promised to stop it.

I never liked Martha Coakley. She bought the primary away from other, more palpable and qualified candidates, and now she's faltering.

Poor Ted. What a shame his legacy is lost on greed, arrogance and ignorance (from both sides).

    Posted by: Rad | Jan 18, 2010 8:07:30 PM

  14. Hopefully when Brown wins he'll travel the world apologizing for Teddy's years in office. Murder, public drinking, standing up for rapists.

  15. MA was the first state I voted in, many years ago. Wish I could vote against the homophobe who wants to deprive people of health care.

Speaking of homophobes, where are these trolls coming from?

    Posted by: KevinVT | Jan 18, 2010 8:40:55 PM

  16. This is entirely, absolutely, 100% Martha's fault and the fault of local Democrat politicians.

She thought she could just slide right into the Senate seat. She barely campaigned until it was too late and refused to do any debate unless it was exactly on her terms.

And locally, the first Democrat governor in 16 years has approval ratings in the 30's. Former state Democrat Senator Dianne Wilkerson awaits federal trial on charges that she stuffed bribes collected from an FBI informant into her bra. Former state Democrat Senator James Marzilli awaits trial on charges that he accosted several women. Former state Democrat Senator Anthony Galluccio was jailed this month for violating the terms of his probation after he fled the scene of an automobile accident.

Just last week, Thomas M. Finneran, another ex-speaker of the House, was disbarred. Finneran was deemed unfit to practice law after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice charges three years ago.

MA citizens are just sick of it.

The MA Dems brought it on to themselves.

  17. That teabagger ad is hilarious. Why do these people take themselves so seriously? Their dramatics and histrionics are epic.

    Posted by: Fanci | Jan 18, 2010 8:47:48 PM

  18. Can someone tell me why Towleroad is scrolling adds FOR Brown? It makes no sense to me??? He is definitely NOT a friend of the gay community.

And... let's get over it... Martha was not my choice either --- but she did win the primary --- we need her there, as a DEMOCRAT. Who ever said politics was ever clean or fair. I don't like it; never did. Unfrotunately no one has come up with a better system, as messy as it gets, for my 57 years I have seen it may be slow, but it is always self-correcting.

    Posted by: Daya | Jan 18, 2010 8:56:13 PM

  19. @Daya: Read the actual post and you'll find out why.

    Posted by: Bostonian | Jan 18, 2010 9:13:11 PM

  20. it's a shame that campaigns win with truth distortions. It's a proven technique that Democrats can't seem to grasp.

You gotta "play the players" to win in politics and Martha clearly isn't playing.

    Posted by: DKNATL | Jan 18, 2010 9:57:24 PM

  21. The Democrats will try to pretend this loss is because of the candidate. This travesty is happening because the Democrats chose Wall Street, the banks and now the insurance companies and pharma lobby to reward. They wanted to be bi-partisan so they threw in goodies to the religious nutjobs with abortion clauses in the HCR bill. We thought we were electing Democrats. We want single-payer and/or medicare for all. Thats why we put them in power. Why control both houses of Congress and still capitulate to the Republicans. Obama and Congress is not listening. This election is their wake-up call. Its unfortunate that a great candidate has to be the messenger. Virginia elected a Republican, NJ elected a Republican. If Massachusetts puts a Republican in Kennedy's former seat, I bet they finally get a clue.

  22. The arrogance of this administration and the Democratic Party are going to get punched in the gut tomorrow thanks to Massachusetts voters. It's time for some sanity.

    Posted by: LincolnLounger | Jan 18, 2010 11:29:23 PM

  23. So just because someone doesn't agree with your views they are "Nutty Teabaggers"?? Jeez...no wonder we can't get any respect!! Nor will we ever if we continue to elect bodies just because they are Democrats, forget their qualifications...if they are living breathing Democrats, they are good enough for the gays!!

    Posted by: Bob | Jan 18, 2010 11:31:20 PM

  24. If you read this blog, you have to be a Democrat? No thanks. I want to support a party that believes in FREEDOM and TOLERANCE, not one full of nanny state bossy boots who endlessly lecture people on what to do.

PS Brown = a wake-up call the Dems need, and he's hot to boot. He has my vote. Coakley is an idiot (Curt Schilling is a Yankee fan? WTF?)

    Posted by: Dan | Jan 19, 2010 1:11:51 AM

  25. First, Coakley deserves to lose. She was an abominable prosecutor who worked hard to keep innocent people in prison. Her authoritarian nature when it came to prison sentences, while helping cover up for bad cops, means she should lose.

Second, so-called universal health care will just be another way the system screws gay people to subsidize the health care of "families" that have legal recognition -- and that ain't us.
