  2. Aha...hahahaha. I love it.

  3. How's about calling it 'The Most Endearing Photo from the Super Bowl'?

Calling the photo 'gay' only serves to uphold the idea that gay men are the only men who show affection towards their peers, forcing straight men to keep their hands (and affection) to themselves lest they'll be considered 'not-straight' by their friends.

In fact, one of the best thing we can do is to help spread the straight manlove, which I suppose has gotten a bit more legitimacy with concepts like 'bromance.'

  4. Perfect for Valentine's Day!

  5. omg smokey you took the words right out of my mouth! i absolutely agree.

the pernicious and unfortunate use of terms like "gay", "homoerotic", or "bromance" with a negative subtext only serves to cultivate homophobia.

  6. it's all the funnier with the teammate in the back which i hadn't even seen before...

    Posted by: daftpunkydavid | Feb 8, 2010 2:33:10 PM

  7. Um yeah, but #20's last name isn't "Endearing." He's part of the composition as well.

  8. Yeah, it's not "gay" just because of the two men, it's "gay" because of them plus the guy in the background.

  9. Smokey, I think we should let Str8 men do it by themselves. Do they REALLY need our help to display their manliness? I take exception to your notion that what Gay men do "Forces" str8 men to do other things. As if...

DaftpunkyDavid I doubt that Gay Citizens can cultivate anything that is not already laying dormant in the fertile soil of a bigot's heart. Any excuse will do to rile the wrath of a tyrant-bigot. Two same gendered people walking down the street hand in hand has been known to "cultivate" violent homophobia. Yeah stop that cultivation.

  10. Yep its pretty gay looking. Gay is gay why argue about it. note the name on the jersey behind them LMAO

  11. It isn't a "gay" photo, but it is funny.

  12. @ sargon bighorn: i see your point. but maybe it's applicable to people who already and unfortunately have an immutable homophobia, the kind of people we shouldn't waste precious efforts on.

but for the rest, for those who are not so stubborn in their homophobia, or for those who haven't been inculcated with homophobia yet (i.e. younger folks), then i think what i wrote still holds.

and your example of walking down the street holding hands would actually in the long run serve to normalize same gender couples, so i see a positive outcome ultimately, and a decrease in homophobia as well (which, as you know, partly springs from fear about what people don't know or know very little about).

  13. DAFTPUNKYDAVID, use your powers for something important in the gay rights movements.

    Posted by: UWSGUY | Feb 8, 2010 3:49:05 PM

  14. sorry if i misconstrue your comment, but are you saying this discussion is not important? i think it does have some importance, because the way things have gone, and are going, we won't be able to rest until homophobia is in the court of public opinion as despicable as racism.

  15. Not that I don't adore this photo, but it should be noted that they are embraced so tightly because there is so much background noise that it is difficult to hear. The player on the left (#1) is likely having to yell in order for the player on the right to be able to hear him -- even at that close distance. The presence of player "Gay" in the background creates a great visual pun regardless.

  16. Well, in the words of a bumper sticker on a car in my 'hood, "It's only gay if the balls touch." So they're all good.

  18. Anyone else reminded of the Patriots episode of Family Guy where all the football players dance to Shipoopi?

    Awesome photo though. :-)

  19. it's cute how a lot of commenters jumped on the hate train before they even had a chance to view the picture enough. it isn't gay for the embrace it is gay for the guy in the background with the name Gay. yeah uhduh.

    this made me lol (:

  20. it's not gay for two bros to embrace...no wonder equal rights for gays are taking so long...

  21. MAJORTOM, those are the kickers, so I'm pretty sure they are embracing to celebrate a field goal, not because the stadium was too loud. Not that it really matters either way. Football players actually hug quite a bit in the course of a game, especially if it is a really important game. I just thought it was funny because of Randall Gay in the background at that exact moment.

  22. This is very typical in European soccer matches...lets hope that we see more of this in America...we sure need to!

  23. Their groins are extremely close. One might even say pressing together.

Posted by: Joseph Coss | Feb 8, 2010 9:24:13 PM

  24. Is it not stereotyping and wrong for gay men to assume none of the men pictured might infact be gay?
If men in sports ever stop hugging and patting themselves on the ass--it will never be about this picture-

  25. Love it.It says it all.I just hope the Super Bowl is never again played in Miami. What a frikking mess. Not worth it.
