Watch: Video of Anti-Gay Mobs in Kenya and Malawi

Kenya1

Last week I posted about the arrests of gay men in Kenya and the bloodthirsty mobs that called for them to be burned. Here's a news report with some very frightening video footage of those mobs, as well as the mobs that have been taunting Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga in Malawi.

In the screenshot above, a man clings to a building as police drag him outside where the mob waits. In another shot, the Malawi couple are hurried away in the back of a lorry.

The NYT reports that the recent attempts at marriage in Kenya and Malawi have stirred fears that a "homosexual agenda" is being imported from the West:

"Much of Malawi is riveted by the case. This is not just a matter of the state versus a same-sex couple; many here believe it is a matter of Malawi against the developed world. How else, they ask, could 'gayism' have crept into a place where it never before existed? 'These immoral acts are not in our culture; they are coming from outside,' said Leckford Thotho, the minister of information and civic affairs. 'Otherwise, why is there all this interest from around the world? Why is money being sent?' The clergy, especially, has accused foreigners of infecting Malawi with sexual Satanism. The Rev. Zacc Kawalala, the leader of the Word Alive Ministry and a member of the national human rights commission, said: 'The West has its gay agenda. It wants to look at Africa and say, ‘If you don’t accept homosexuality, you are primitive.’ But we’re not as wicked as the West.'"

More likely it is the American evangelists who have come to Africa to stoke and encourage this hatred against gays, an enemy perhaps many of these people didn't know they had until they were taught it by their Anglican pastors.

  1. Let's see now:
    "minister of information"
    "world alive ministry"
    "human rights commission"
THOSE are all Western imports that perhaps they should fight against. Homosexuality and transgenderism (which the marriage case seems to be about) are not.

Especially they should reject Christianity, which is no doubt a Colonial import in Malawi.

  2. Where is the outrage? Where is Oprah, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton? Can we hear from any of them?

  3. These people are backward savages, their homophobic attitudes are probably their most sophisticated ideals. They are mostly illiterate, malnourished primitives, do you really expect them to be pro-gay!?! This is a part of the world, after all, where a young girl's vagina is sewed up after clitoris is sliced off, albinos (including children) are killed and consumed in the hopes of gaining mystical powers, and people still believe that trees have spirits. Oh, and if your neighbor pisses you off you pick up your machete and hack him to pieces.

By the way this isn't racist, just a fact, I'm a black West Indian immigrant living in the U.S. There's a much more subtle usually (not always) non-violent version of this in the Caribbean, though tourism dollars and proximity to the U.S. and our past mostly British colonial history (which heavily influenced our culture, much more so than say Nigeria), means some semblance of sophistication does exist in West Indian societies. They are hopeless, completely incapable of complex thought and the last thing they could ever comprehend is tolerance for anybody different, let alone gay people!! It's called primitive thinking people!!This is their normal!

  4. IF ANYONE OUT THERE IS READING THIS: Can you please tell me what I need to download so I can view the video clips on TOWLEROAD.COM? As it is right now, the video is blank and there's a small square in the upper left-hand corner that has a smaller square (red), a blue triangle and a green circle in it. THANKS for any info!

  5. Heaven forbid, but if a natural disaster were to hit Kenya or Malawi, I would not send a FUCKING dime to help them out! There is no excuse for hatred and bigotry.

  6. "Oh, and if your neighbor pisses you off you pick up your machete and hack him to pieces"

Then we'd better keep President Obama away from Republican Minority Leader McConnell. (hack, hack)

KAYLA, many Ugandans, Kenyans and Malawians looked at that video footage and probably felt the same way you did.

  7. We are all very fortunate to be living in the United States in the year 2010. Many of our brothers around the world are a century or more behind us in human progress.

  8. Kenya:
    Male/Male Illegal Female/Female Legal
    Malawi:
    Male/Male Illegal Female/Female Legal

Of course, we can safely assume that these laws were drafted by str8 men!

  9. And in Uganda, where they want to execute gay people, polygamy is legal. Guess the American Christian Extremists who helped push lawmakers in that country to the brink of genocide don't have a problem with that, nor the other gross violations of human rights of gay men and ALL women happening in some of these countries.

  10. @Kevin, what does Oprah have to do with this?? Umm...she's black...these savages are black... Okay now I get it, I'm a little slow on the uptake, sorry!! Does this mean that I'm also culpable?? Maybe I should release a statement too, certainly the fact that they and I retain similar levels of melanin in our skin means that my words will magically change their bigoted thinking!!

...Or maybe not. Maybe(and I know this will surely make your head explode)the truth is Oprah has no more influence over the actions of these people than does Angelina Jolie or George Clooney!! Wonders never cease!!

As for the disgusting Charlatans, Jackson and Sharpton, well we all know that they don't give a crap about what happens over there, since it rarely ever involves Whitey. And those two specimens of human vileness only lift a finger when Whitey's involved anyway. Then they can cry racism, threaten to sue, force whitey into shelling out some dough which they nobly utilize to procure themselves and their posses a few extra trinkets.

On a side note, I want to say that I hold, the Elite White Media completely responsible for continually foisting these two idiots (who seem incapable of stringing together a coherent sentence) on all of black America (though I admit there are some degenerates who follow them like sheep). Since they're the ones who put a camera or microphone in front of these men's visages every time a faux racism crisis arises. We never even got a freaking vote, but apparently the White Media Elites, in their infinite wisdom, have decided who our spokesmen are (who's the voice of white America?--I vote Sarah Palin!) and we can't do shit about it!!

  12. I personally find it awful, but is it our business to tell foreigners how to think, behave, or conduct business?

  13. Please don't ask me to give a shit about what happens to Africans any more.

  14. Jt, when they come hat and hand asking us to feed and clothe them, it is. Next time a famine hits, let em starve

How does one reach people that are that deluded? It seems like the only way is by brute force...that's the only negotiating tool. So much for those who insist that cultural superiority doesn't exist.

And your evidence for this is....?

  17. "gross indecency"

    "crimes against nature"

Now, where have I seen these terms before.

The 19th century British legal code that was enacted in their colonies throughout the world, perhaps?

You know, white people love to cause trouble. And then two hundred years later they show up to purportedly solve problems they created in the first place. But, of course, they don't assume any actual responsibility for any of this. Because they are perfect in every way. No, it is the "barbaric" and "savage" nature of Africa that's the issue.

    Posted by: John | Feb 15, 2010 1:27:23 PM

  18. Don't blame the british legal code for the language, john...as that language preceded it (as did homophobia), and it just reflected it. Let's pass the buck, too, from the american evangelists who were raised to believe this, and were "influenced" by their environments to adopt this hateful belief system...for if we're to use your reasoning, they're no more to blame for their actions than these africans. If we're going to infantilize one racial demographic, we should do it for all them...or else it's just racism.

  19. From the looks of that video, these people are animals. Is there any sense of civility in Kenya or Malawai? I understand poverty is pervasive in most parts of Africa. But even the poor should know that human rights for EVERYONE is essential. This is simultaneously sick and sad.

  20. I really feel terrible for the incredibly brave couple who just want to be a couple! They are the Rosa Parkses od Kenya. They are heroes.

I wish they were not already jailed, because if there were ever a case for political asylum this is it. And the U.S. and Canada better NOT reject any gay refugees from these countries!!!

  21. Clearly, all dark-skinned must be gullible and easily brainwashed by light-skinned people. That is, after all, the only bizarrely racist conclusion that can be gained from the leftist party line that infantilizes dark-skinned people such that they are not held responsible for their own behavior.

Taken to its (il)logical conclusion, it could be argued that, ultimately, no group or nation is responsible for any discrimination or hatred directed at any group, as nearly every nationality has been invaded and/or oppressed by some other group at some point in history.

Also, one can imagine that if the white man had never set foot on African soil that the continent of Africa tend would be Eden on year, with no strife, war, poverty, or discrimination.

  22. "Also, one can imagine that if the white man had never set foot on African soil that the continent of Africa tend would be Eden on year, with no strife, war, poverty, or discrimination.

No, but it would be a place where gay drag queens could live in peace as they did 300 years ago.

THese comments always show a contempt and hatred for black people long before homophobia was ever thought of.

Posted by: Derrick from Philly | Feb 15, 2010 3:44:55 PM

  23. Grabbin is as usual full of it.
Colonial regimes, including forced conversions, were hardly "infantilizing." They were brutal. And they very brutally destroyed any native traditions that looked queer and taught people good old Christian values, like kill the fags.

Why is it infantilizing to claim that Western homophobia has been exported around the world? Why do you think in the early days so many gay men wanted to go abroad as explorers in the first place? Jesus, learn some history, for god's sake.

Bleys's Geography of Perversion, for example.
Or Robert Aldrich, or Dennis Altman.

  24. I think we're now in perpetuating the myth of the noble savage, or that before big bad white man came, everyone lived in harmony, and wanted for nothing. This is factually false, for there was always war, famine, and genocide. And no, africa wouldn't be the land of gay tolerance sans colonialism. It's infantalizing because we're talking about their responsibility for their awful disgusting behavior right now. They are, right now, responsible for it. There is no excuse.

And you can, in fact, make the argument that no one is responsible their beliefs and actions, white or black...if you wanna go down that road (which you are by treating these grownups like children who can't be held accountable).

    Posted by: TANK | Feb 15, 2010 9:06:00 PM

  25. Tank : We mustn't excuse some of the worst aspects of colonialism, but the "noble savage" idea really IS greatly a myth (like those who refuse to believe the Native Americans weren't torturing and slaughtering each other over hunting grounds before Caucasians ever got to American shores). And it's racist the way others try to claim Africans are such controllable pea-brains that whites can just put ideas into their heads. But for the poltically-correct, that's the only alternative left to actually putting the blame for African homophobia directly on Africans.
