Transgender Woman Found Dead in Ransacked NYC Apartment

A transgender woman was found naked and dead in her Queens apartment, the NY Daily News reports:

Transnyc"Edelbuerto Gonzalez-Andujar, 29, who lived as a woman and went by the name Amanda, had not been heard from since Friday. Her friends got her landlord to let them into her Glendale apartment around 4 p.m. Tuesday. 'We found her on her bed. She was naked,' said Barbara Vega, 35, of Bushwick, Brooklyn. 'Everything in the apartment was destroyed. All her Marilyn Monroe pictures were destroyed.' Police said the medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Vega, who believes Gonzalez-Andujar was slain, said she had tried in vain to reach her friend since spending time with her on Friday. 'She never had any problems with anybody. She was full of life,' she said. 'We need to know who did this to her.' Gonzalez-Andujar's friends wailed as her body, covered in a black plastic bag, was taken out of the 62nd St. building yesterday."

In related news, you may recall that GLAAD raised objections to the inclusion of the film Ticked Off Trannies with Knives late last week over its "exploitative depictions of violence against transgender women."

Filmmaker Israel Luna wrote this note to Towleroad regarding the film: "Thank you for giving your attention to my film Ticked Off Trannies with Knives. I was prompted to write this movie in part by the hate crimes against the trans community; which is why the tragic stories of Angie Zapata and Jorge Mercado appear at the beginning of my trailer. My initial thought of placing them there was to give a disturbing reality to my film about transgender violence. After listening to some of the voices in the trans-community I've decided to remove those references from the trailer. I plan to post a new trailer later this week (facebook, YouTube and and our movie website.) It seems that the association between their brutal stories and the revenge/thriller content of the film in it's entirety, has been difficult to connect. Even with this change, I hope the trailer will continue to raise awareness of the horrible truth of rampant violence against trans-women."

  1. How awful.

Thanks for connecting the recent GLAAD news. Its objections to the marketing of Trannies with Knives feels somewhat prescient now, but really this kind of violence is common, which is why I think the organization seems extra sensitive about trans-related portrayals.

  3. With respect to the director and to all artists, I do not think that this film should be censored. But, based on the trailers presented thus far, the artistry of the film does not seem to have transcended the great harm that Hollywood has created in consistently depicting trans-women as murderous fiends and verbally abusive sex freaks.

These stereotypical portrayals are as ubiquitous the transgender, serial killing character named Gumb in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS who, after being turned down for sex reassignment surgery, goes on the hunt for female body parts. Gumb's story in the film was a kind of revenge scenario that exploits the entire idea of being transgender.

Do we really need more portrayals of transgender people as revenge killers?

    No we do not.

Do we really need more portrayals of self-loathing gay men like some of the characters in BOYS IN THE BAND?

    No we do not.

What we need are more nuanced portrayals of LGBTQI people as subtle, multifaceted human beings and not as old fashioned stereotypes.

Thus, while I do not advocate censorship, I do think we should not shy away from critiquing the artistry and politics of the film.

And Israel Luna needs to sober up and address the film's lurid stereotyping in a way that goes beyond simply removing the tasteless images from the trailer.

  6. Specifically Veg-we didn't need anymore images of fat, government-assisted welfare mothers for the African-American community either but Mo'Nique turned that one out. Hope you see ours and realize it's a comedy. Comedy comes from drama which comes from pain. You're usually laughing at someone or at someone's sake. In Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives, the 5 girls are only laughed with, not at. The assailants are laughed at.
My heart goes out to this girl and her kin.

  7. Oh, and dolemite wasn't blacksploitation! Nooooooo, not at all. There's a real poverty of sophisticated gay films and directors who produce them... and screenplay writers. Perhaps that's why they can get away with such horrendous arguments in defense of their "output".

  8. Hey Tank, Jorge Mercado, as far as we know, identified as gay. But that said, Jorge's alleged killer said he picked Jorge, whom he said he thought was a female prostitute, when Jorge was allegedly dressed in women's clothing. At this point in the alleged killer's story, the alleged killer went into the standard trans panic/gay panic strategy of defense. The alleged killer said that he discovered Jorge had male genitalia, and thus was horrified to discover Jorge was really a man. So, in an alleged "heat of passion" crime, he said killed Jorge.

There is not a lot of evidence to actually support the alleged killer's story about Jorge being dressed as a woman and working as a prostitute, but the statements made by alleged killer turned the killing of an apparently gay young man into a both an antigay and an antitransgender hate crime -- So, community fold can think of this crime as being a combined antigay and antitransgender hate murder at the same time, based soley on the as yet unsubstantiated allegations of the alleged killer.

  9. Oh, it's alleged killer now. Look, crazypants, jorge mercado wasn't transgender and wasn't a CD according to his family. The killer is lying; the typical he came on to me, or deceived in some way gay panic defense. Not alleged killer, but killer. This was an antigay murder.

    Posted by: TANK | Mar 31, 2010 6:30:19 PM

  10. Tank: If you're wondering why Autumn is using the phrase "alleged killer," it's not because she's "crazypants," it's because she's a damned good journalist and that's what a journalist does until the person in question is actually convicted.

Secondly, a person doesn't have to be gay or trans to be the victim of an anti-gay or anti-trans crime.

Regardless of Jorge's gender identity or even the truth of the killer's story, the killer is claiming that he was deceived by Jorge's gender presentation as part of his defense. That is a trans-panic defense. Trans- and gay- panic defenses openly admit that a crime was motivated by hatred/bias in the hope of appealing to the same sentiments in the judge and jury.

  11. Oh, and to be clear: his defense illustrates the intersection between homophobia and transphobia. It is both an anti-gay and anti-trans crime; they're not mutually exclusive.

  12. " Comedy comes from drama which comes from pain. You're usually laughing at someone or at someone's sake. In Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives, the 5 girls are only laughed with, not at. The assailants are laughed at."

Unless you're trans, this isn't your pain and this isn't your representation. We tans people can just do fine representing ourselves in the media on our own, thank you.

  13. No, jerks! You can't claim it. "alleged" doesn't equate to damn fine journalism when the perp confessed! LOL!'re a joke. And I will believe jorge's family over the lies of the murderer. Jorge's was an antigay hate crime, not antitrans.

  14. William: You are missing the point of my comment.

    (1) When a film REPEATS and CELEBRATES negative stereotypes of an oppressed minority group it LAUGHS AT and WORKS AGAINST that group.

    (2) It's not a SUCCESSFUL or POLITICALLY RELEVANT comedy when it presents trans-folk as killers and stereotypes.

    (3) Old fashioned, moribund, hateful stereotypes are not funny and it's BAD satire. It's also BAD ART.

    (4) Israel Luna spent a whole lot of time and money FAILING to make a TRULY progressive artistic examination of anti-trans violence. What a waste! We need a sober film that is laughing at or with anything that discusses the transgenders who have been murdered and maimed in the last 15 years--if not forever.

    (5) We can go see a drag show every night of the freaking week everywhere across the country where stereotypes are lampooned and celebrated until the cows come home. Time for something different in an ART FILM FESTIVAL.
