Nate Phelps, Estranged Son of Westboro Baptist Church Pastor Fred Phelps, Speaks Out on Canadian TV

Nate Phelps, the estranged son of fag-hating soldier-hating, America-hating Westboro Baptist Church pastor Fred Phelps, spoke out against him in an interview that aired last night on Vision TV in Canada:

"In his first in-depth television interview, he tells journalist Peter W. Klein about a childhood dominated by a fear of going to hell, and says the Westboro Baptist Church shares some of the same traits as a cult. Phelps says his father regularly beat his mother and 11 siblings, used racial epithets and blamed the world’s problems on homosexuality....In the interview, Phelps says that his father was once a brilliant and well-respected lawyer who led several anti-segregation cases and was honoured by the NAACP as a civil rights hero. Nate Phelps now considers himself an atheist."

If I can find video on the Vision TV Phelps interview, I'll post it. For now, here's a recent segment from the Centre for Inquiry, AFTER THE JUMP...

  1. Hmm. I wonder if fred phelps is paranoid schizophrenic.

  2. Oh, Fred (Sr.) is psychiatrically ill, no question.

Nate Phelps is also speaking in Topeka on April 24. (See Richard Dawkins' website.) It is so awesome that's he's coming forward. What an incredible tragedy -- incredibly bad random luck -- to have been born into that family.

Ditto L. Ron Hubbard's children. One of them, Quentin Hubbard, was apparently gay, and killed himself.

I wish nothing but healing, peace, and happiness for Nate.

  3. I can see the Phelps freaks pulling a Jonestown in the future.

  4. I watched Nate's six part speech on YouTube. AMAZING. As horrible, hateful and terrifying as I find Phelps' public displays to be, it doesn't compare to the hate and violence that he perpetrates on his own wife, children and followers. This is a very eye opening and disturbing look into the behind-the-scenes world of Westboro Baptist and the Phelps clan.

I wish Nate and his brother Mark and any other person who escapes the Phelps cult all the best in life. I hope they find healing, comfort and happiness. Please tell your stories loudly and OFTEN. They NEED to be heard.

  5. Indeed they do. This is exceptionally important testimony.

Nate shwos that Fred isn't interested in "saving" anyone. Accordign to fred we're all going to Hell, and he's here to gloat over that supposed "Fact."

"Sick" doesn't begin to describe Fred Phelps. He is the embodiment of the Evil he claims to decry.

  6. There are several ex-cult members who have spoken out against Phelps.

  7. This is very interesting. A lot of info came out from a court deposition years ago, and is available online. Google 'addicted to hate.'

  10. Nate doesn't need a family like that. The less he has to do with those psychopathic bigots the better off he will be.

Someone ought to give Shirley Phelps, Fred Phelps and their whole band of bigots enemas and bury them in shoe boxes.
