Police Explore Gay Connection in Murder of D.C. School Principal

D.C. middle school principal Brian Betts was shot and killed at his home in Silver Spring, Maryland sometime on April 14th or 15th. His car was apparently stolen but because of the existence of a second vehicle, police recently disclosed they had a second suspect in mind and seemed to be nearing some results in their investigation:

Betts "By publicly disclosing their belief of at least a second suspect, police are suggesting Betts' killer may not have acted alone. Police have not said whether they believe anyone else was in the home with Betts and the person who pulled the trigger. Investigators have not indicated whether items were stolen from inside Betts' home or whether they believed robbery was the motive. Police say they're investigating whether Betts' homosexuality made him a target. As in any murder case, police continue to investigate Betts' recent and past romantic relationships for clues into why he may have been killed and by whom. 'I think we're going to solve this case,' says Starks. 'We're getting good information, and we're further along than we were last week.'"

  2. The "First 48" had an episode on last night of a gay man named Vernon Allmond who was murdered in Cincinnati two years ago. The episode showcased a typical anti-gay murder (heterosexual strangers killing a gay man in the most brutal way and then stealing property) but not surprisingly the heterosexual detectives completely ignored that movitve.

Do you think the heterosexual police in Washington D.C. will favor a motive that has nothing to do with Betts' sexuality because they are ignorant to it and/or don't want to put the effort into the case? I am skeptical. Are there any gay detective on the police force? Are they brave enough to pursue the anti-gay motives and to push his or her colleagues to do the same?

Brian Betts' murder IS anti-gay. Rarely do heterosexuals get murdered by strangers in their home or a place they are familiar with. However with gay people it's very common because heterosexuals have a hatred toward gay people. The fact that there are NO suspects over a week after the murder says the heterosexuals that killed Betts' were strangers. Betts probably met them that day and because of gay people accomodating nature thought they were trustworthy and let them into his home where their true intentions (murder) played out.

  3. This is an interesting angle on the case. I haven't been following it closely, but don't remember seeing anything in the Washington Post about Betts being gay. Oddly, my first thought when this hit the papers was that it was another case of a casual hook-up gone horribly wrong, but so far the local cops have been uncharacteristically quiet about where their investigation is leading. Such a sad story....the kids at his school were crying at his memorial service, and he was a very popular and apparently successful principal.

  4. Wow, Bill, the intellectual laziness...it burns. Seriously, monolithic depictions of queers and breeders? Yeah, we're ALL so accommodating and they're ALL so hateful.

"Rarely do heterosexuals get murdered by strangers in their home or a place they are familiar with."

While most murders involve established relationships (coworker, friend, neighbor, family) there isn't a significant delineated rate of stranger violence between sexualities. I'm sorry you have to live with such a paranoid and useless worldview.

  5. This case has really hit the DCPS students, staff, and faculty hard. He was a beloved principal at his school.

  6. I live next to this school. Last weekend the community and students gathered to show their respect. There was a lot of crying.

Here's a photo of just one of the bit of 'graffiti' that were drawn in chalk on the school - it's clear he was truly loved.

  7. Also, STFU Bill. The whole community, including straight police officers and their children are reeling. DC is a violent city, but this case has affected a wide swath of humanity, gay and straight alike.

  8. Yes, there is a "significant delineated rate of stranger violence between sexualities."

  9. Bill, The DC police force has many openly gay detectives and has for many years. If you're going to bore us with pseudo-sociology, at least bother to learn a couple of facts.

Betts was esteemed in the community. Great person great educator. He is missed.
