Two Marines Attack Gay Man In Savannah

Two marines beat a 26-year-old gay man so severely early this morning that he was left unconscious in the streets of Savannah. The victim, Kieran Daly, is still hospitalized.

The Savannah Morning News reports on the incident:

"The officer caught up with the two men who were running away, identified as Keil Joseph Cronauer, 22, and Christopher Charles Stanzel, 23. Police records show both men are stationed at Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, S.C. Cronauer and Stanzel told police they were being harassed by a gay man and wanted to get away from him. But witnesses painted a different picture, according to the report."

Savan "They told police one of the men grew angry because he thought Daly was winking at him and struck Daly in the back of the head with his fist, knocking him unconscious. Saturday night, from his bed at Memorial University Medical Center, Daly insisted he tried to convince the Marines he was not winking at them. 'The guy thought I was winking at him,' Daly said. 'I told him, 'I was squinting, man. ... I'm tired.'"

"Daly said one of the men told him he demanded respect because he served in Iraq. And at least one hurled slurs at him as he tried to walk away. 'That's the last thing I remember is walking away,' Daly said."

Daly, who only came out six months ago, suffered serious injuries which included bruising to the brain. he also experienced two seizures after the attack. Cronauer and Stanzel were arrested and charged for the possible hate crime.

The paper also reports that the attack is being investigated by the police the Savannah police department's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender official.

  1. Yeesh. All this only 6 months after coming out? That can't feel too good (in addition to physical injuries that is). Hope he recovers quickly and doesn't let this incident drag him down.

And can you believe the entitlement issues those marines have? "he demanded respect because he served in Iraq" Just because you served in the military does not give you automatic respect, you have to earn it. That means actually respecting others, not beating them up cause you're homophobic and have anger issues.

  2. A direct result of the massive institutionalized homophobia in the military and, if you were to look closer, of the insane persecution of gays encouraged by most "Christian" churches!

  3. Gays winking... come on, really? Hard to believe anyone would be that stupid. On the street where any homobasher might be lurking. And in the deep south??? does not add up.

  4. I think a nice dishononorable discharge should be in the works.

  5. How ridiculous is it that Daly has to defend his actions, like somehow if he did give a wink that'd be a good enough excuse to toss him to the hospital.

  6. If Daly had been in the military, this wouldn't have been reported at all. That is the sad plight of so many gay men and women in the military.

I'm glad to see this is in the hands of the G&L task force. That means there's some hope for justice. I would like to see if the military will press charges as well.

  11. It reminds me of the time about a decade or so ago when the gay bashers in Jacksonville, North Carolina entered a gay bar abd attacked a couple of gay men, knocked their teeth out, blackened their eyes. The court couldn't decide whether the straight men were being harassed by the gays, so they let them off, and the military did nothing. Hope the same thing doesn't occur here. BUT the gay guy may have winked at the marine, so he may have had it coming.

  12. If you're a trained killer, and you attack someone, isn't that attempted murder?

  13. Incidentally, that was snark. I don't care if he blew him a kiss, lowered his pants and mooned them. Unless they were physically assaulted, there was no justification for the beating.

  14. Both are probably closet cases. After serving 7 years in the Army without any kind of incident. It's the closet cases that raise so much ruckus about gays and gays in the military. I have seen it first hand too many times. They are like scared liitle babies who are affraid to think for themselves so the church has to tell them how to think and act. It's just so ashame that in today's time, that we would still have all this hate. They deserve to be honorably discharged. I also served in Iraq, which makes me respect others differences, not beat the shit out of them because of it. These guys are idiots.

  15. What a major sack of shit.. and I figured that was total snark Candideinnc. Gays deserve to be beaten by blowing a kiss, hitting on or smiling at straight people the same way a woman in short skirt, drunk, or flirty deserves to be sexually assaulted. Never.

  21. Apparently Chris Stanzel's interests according to Facebook include "staying out of trouble".

  22. I think this would make a great test case for the new federal hate crimes law. I hope the US Attorney for Georgia has the stomach for that.

  25. And gays can not serve this country, but these two douche bags can. God bless America.
