If they wanted to get "as married as they could", they should have actually gotten married, either in Canada or one of the states with no residency requirement. NY state recognizes out of state SSM.

Cheyenne and Monty "secretly" got married? What was secret about it? The original story mentions nothing about secrecy, and they're open about their 10-year relationship. It cheapens gay relationships by implying that they did something wrong or sneaky.

I don't think they did it out of shame, but more out of privacy. Why would they even bother getting married if they're ashamed of being gay? They wouldn't.

BobN is correct. If they wanted to get "as married as they could," they could have just taken a quick drive to Connecticut, where gay marriage is legal, and actually have gotten married. NY State will recognize gay marriages performed in other states.
