What does "boo" even mean? Someone says that to me, and I expect a scary ghost. But then I realize it's just a man in a white sheet.

I believe it's a corruption of the French 'beau' meaning pretty/handsome, and by extension your pretty boyfriend. (The female equivalent being 'belle', as in "belle of the ball".)
I think in its uncorrupted form it was quite popular around the time of Jane Austen novels etc. "Her new beau is the Duke of Marlborough's son"
I agree that 'boo' seems a bit silly to British ears too.
