Focus on the Family to Sponsor National Student Day Against Gays

Many of you are familiar with the "Day of Truth", the campaign created by right-wing religious groups as an answer to GLSEN's "Day of Silence", which promotes tolerance and fights LGBT bullying at schools nationwide.

The "Day of Truth" was formerly sponsored by "ex-gay" group Exodus International. In early October, Exodus said it would no longer sponsor the event because attention had been brought to the number of gay suicides caused by bullying.

Well, now Colorado Springs' Focus on the Family has picked up the torch and they're sponsoring the event and changing its name to "Day of Dialogue".

The Gazette reports:

"Focus on Thursday launched the website, a resource for students interested in being part of the protest next April. 'The Day of Dialogue gives you, as a student, the opportunity to express the true model presented by Jesus Christ in the Bible (on homosexuality),' the website says…Focus resurrected the anti-gay program to balance the dialogue on homosexuality in schools, Candi Cushman, Focus education analyst, said in a news release. 'We're trying to raise awareness that more than one side needs to be heard on the issue of homosexuality, and we're helping to ensure that Christian students have the chance to express their viewpoint,' Cushman said.'"

On the Day of Dialogue's homepage, they suggest you read THIS to get an idea about the kind of truth they're pushing.

This organization really thinks they can speak for God on this issue, yet they reference absolutely ZERO verses from the bible wherein Jesus speaks about sexuality. They portend to know what he was inferring when speaking about our bodies, marriage, etc.

Jesus said nothing about homosexuality and they know it but they’re willing to fabricate wherever necessary.

This is typical religio-horseshit disguised as friendly “equal time” dialogue. Sickening.

  2. Jerome says

Ugh! Like it’s our fault for broken sexuality, broken marriages, etc. More bigoted propaganda for the uneducated “Christian” masses. Yawn.

  3. says

if jesus even ever existed, the words attributed to said supposed being do in fact mention homosexuality

“I have come not to destroy the law but to fulfill it. Not 1 dot from the law shall pass away till the end of the world.”

The law is the law of moses (another not proven to have ever truly existed outside of fairytales mythological being) and the law of moses most definitely condemns us

The world has not ended so if both beings existed then jesus reaffirmed the mosaic law regarding homosexuals = we should be stoned to death

    Blah, barbaric myth bs

  4. Anastasia Beaverhausen says

In their wacky “citizenlink” pages they say “Scripture teaches that humans are made in God’s image as male and female” (blah, blah, blah) but intersexed individuals “can sometimes be surgically corrected” to their “assigned gender”. Assigned by whom?

    Contradiction, sacrilege, or both?

  5. pete says

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. We have not turned to our local priests and religious authorities to answer our questions about our bodies and about nature since the middle ages. They can say my left-handedness is a sin too, if they want. But what to health and medical experts say about my natural inclination to use my left hand and my affirmative choice to accept that as my nature and to go with it?

  6. Fenrox says

This is way schools need pflag groups. The parents have to get involved! When a gay childrens book goes to a school, right wing crazy parents make a fun and get the thing banned. This will work both ways, Gay and gay ally parents can demand that their kids aren’t subjected to this filth.

  7. sjorgl says

Well, if it’s going to be a dialog about what Jesus said about homosexuality in the Bible, it’s going to be extremely short – because he literally said NOTHING about it.
You would think these Christians knew their Bibles. Much easier just to spread lies using Jesus’ name.

  8. sparks says

‘We’re trying to raise awareness that more than one side needs to be heard on the issue of homosexuality’

There aren’t two sides. Their “side” is simply a refusal to accept scientific, natural law; and a willingness to substitute that with a collection of fairy tales.

When I see them wearing t-shirts advocating wife-beating, slavery, and executions for infidelity — I’ll excuse them for believing a verse from Leviticus about man laying with another man being an abomination.

But I wonder how much tolerance the public school system would have for THOSE kind of t-shirts. Would they say that was free speech too?

  9. Frank says

It’s time to arm gay and gay-friendly students with the facts about Christianity. Have them pass out literature on atrocities committed by Christians including the Blood Libel, pogroms, the burning of gays in Christian countries, the collaboration of the Catholic church with fascism, etc.

If the Christian Reich wants to use free speech as an offensive weapon, lets turn the weapon on them.

  10. Tim says

So, God was a hermaphrodite? Hmm. And women should sit home in skirts and makeup and wait for their man to come and take care of them after working all day? Interesting….

And all the crap they say about sexual desire being healthy in heterosexual relations is farce. It states that sins of the flesh for any reason other than intended procreation is wrong. So even a man and wife having sex for fun is wrong. It’s why the Catholic church is against any form of deviant sexual behaviour. It can’t create a child so it’s wrong. More manipulation of verse to justify their sexual behaviour when it’s just as wrong as what we do, as far as their argument is concerned.

  11. One of the CA 36,000 says

Lost in all of this: What right do they have proselytizing in nominally secular public schools?! Why are we allowing these schizophrenic Christianists to push a religious agenda against the very existence law-abiding American citizens in our public schools?!?

These are sick, horribly damaged psychotics who should be locked up far away from sane people. ALL OF THEM.

  12. Hollywood, CA says

It’s about time. Those POOR POOR POOR Christian Heterosexual students who are being bullied by gay kids and committing suicide in droves… THOSE POOR POOR POOR CHRISTIAN HETEROSEXUAL KIDS… (insert tear)

  13. mike says

I hate to disappoint FOF and the rest of those evangelical cretins, but Jesus had absolutely NOTHING to say about “homosexuality”. “Day of Dialogue”? I’d love to “dialogue” face-to-face with any of those homophobic assholes.

  14. TANK says

“I hate to disappoint FOF and the rest of those evangelical cretins, but Jesus had absolutely NOTHING to say about “homosexuality”.”

I see a lot of gay friendly and gay christians rely on this crutch…I don’t know why…what do you hope to accomplish by saying that?

Arguing scripture with antigay fundamentalist sure sounds productive, huh…you telling a person that their preferred revelation based interpretation isn’t yours, and that yours is superior because of the whims of…revelation…

But yes, save your defense of faith and whatnot for people who give a shit, and also, argue with your antigay brethren about what it means to be a “true” christian–not people who are naturally responding to being attacked by superstitious idiots with superstition.

  15. BobN says

“more than one side needs to be heard on the issue of homosexuality”

They had 1500 years. Surely we can have one day a year, no?

  16. Paul says

“if there’s one thing I want every gay person in the world to know it’s that we are Hated, they HATE us.”

    Larry K

  17. Robie says

@ Pau/Larry K (the Larry K?)- Amen to that! It’s easy to forget in our liberal urban communities that most of the country is actually made up of people who would like nothing better than to see us swinging at the end of a rope. If you doubt it, simply examine the outcomes of our elections- every pro gay measure put to a public referendum fails. Don’t forget it!
