Michael Medved Angry That Trans NCAA Player Kye Allums is Allowed to Play on Women's Team

Allums

Michael Medved is very angry that Kye Allums, the NCAA Division 1's first publicly transgender player, has debuted on the George Washington University women's basketball team.

Writes Medved (via outsports): Medved

"An insane level of political correctness recently dictated that George Washington University must accept a self-proclaimed man on the women’s basketball team. Kye Allums, a junior forward, 'came out' recently as a transgendered male, and the team officially recognized her male identity as she awaits gender reassignment surgery. This absurd situation means either that the athletic officials inexplicably allow a man to play on a woman’s team, or else they don’t really consider Allums a man. If male players said their essential nature was female, could they play on women’s teams? Separate competition for males and females recognizes the huge physical differences between the two genders—distinctions that remain even after hormone injections and genital surgery. The Allums example suggests that we take athletic competition too seriously to allow gender classification based on feelings alone."

Allums and team officials talk about his competitive status here.

Medved has in the past discussed openly gay athletes, sympathizing with athletes (and soldiers) who have to "share showers and locker rooms with open homosexuals." He has also expressed his discomfort with heterosexual actors playing gay.

  1. That photo of Medved is about 20 years old. Please, he's a shriveling old coot with serious homophobia....and he's just DYING to come out and start his own self-acceptance. I mean really, have you seen him on TV? He's as fem as the come!

  2. Who's Michael Medved, and why do we care what he thinks? I mean, that moustache... come on now...

  3. As long as he isn't taking any hormones it's really a moot point. Leave him alone.

  4. Ever HEARD the guy? There's a reason he's homophobic! That guy is about as fem as fem gets.

  5. I find this fascinating. Like the transgendered man who opted to keep his reproductive capabilities and give birth, this young man is not simply swapping one stereotypical gender role for another, but reinventing the idea of fixed gender altogether. This more plastic idea of gender is guaranteed to rankle--and not just conservative, closeted movie reviewers. I initially found the "man has baby" news coverage to be disturbing. I still find Buck Angel disturbing. When I ask myself why, the best answer I can come up with is my unquestioned assumption that to be transgender means shedding one (ill-fitting) gender identity completely and assuming another. But it doesn't, or at least it doesn't have to. Many of our transgender sisters and brothers are showing us that they prefer to "have it both ways" and live at least part of their lives as both man and woman. Certainly, that is the 'intermediate' state that every transgender person must pass through even if their personal end goal is complete gender transformation. But, who is to say that this undefined state is any less legitimate than any other? As a gay man who every day asserts my personal dignity and inalienable right to live with and love another man, I certainly don't feel comfortable drawing lines and creating boxes for the transgendered to live in.

  6. Michael Medved is a bore and a boor and an example of Hebraic confusion in a gentile world. I don't think a fem man is necessarily gay.

  7. Medved might be a douche, don't pay attention to him.

It drives me crazy that whenever someone acts homophobic, they are immediately tagged as gay by gays. That's just saying gays are so fucked up mentally and it could never be staright guys who are just haters.

the breeders can have them. why make claims for the mentally unstable.

  8. Medved is also a lousy movie critic. Or he was. Does he even review films anumore?

  9. regardless to what michael thinks in my gay man's opinion it is kind of a weird grey area. if she truly believes she is a man why would HE continue to play on a womens team? its kind of hypocritical. am i wrong? i dunno i dont want to be as crass as this michael is but uhh it just seem this player wants to have her cake and eat it too

  11. I can't stand Medved. Having said that, it is rather unfair that a guy can simply say I am a woman and then go on a woman's teem. I mean, please she has a DICK and testrone producing balls.

  12. I remember seeing an advanced screening of Brokeback Mountain in Seattle for the press. Michael Medved sat directly in front of me. He sat through the entire moving shaking his head back and forth in disgust. Total wanker!

  13. JKM: yes, err, that's why this situation never happens.

CHRISTOPHER: Buck Angel has never said he was "between genders" or whatever. He's 100% a man. Having sex isn't "having it both ways" - He couldn't get a penis if he wanted one, because that's medically impossible as of 2010. So it's not a matter of wanting to remain partially of the other gender. It's dealing with what you have.

  14. I think Medved has a point. If she has become a man, then it's time to go play with the big boys. I might add the only reason this is happening is because women's sports are already full of lesbians because lesbians like to do mannish things more than straight women do. Just goes to show that sports are a fundamentally masculine thing and that this Title 9 shit, where you have more women's sports than men's at most colleges now, is completely backwards.

  15. Good for him! I hope he is the BEST B'ball player there!

  16. If she has become a man, then it's time to go play with the big boys.

Don't be stupid, you know that he doesn't have the height or muscle mass to compete on a D1 men's team. It's a lot more complicated than that because he's caught in a classic Catch 22 that trans people are sometimes put in.

He got a scholarship to play on a woman's team. So if he transitions, he gets kicked off the team and loses out on a college education at one of the best colleges in the nation.

However, if he doesn't transition and plays for GW, he has to live as gender he doesn't identify with, suffer from gender dysphoria and miss out on a college experience living as himself.

So no matter what he does, the system is set up in a such a way that he's going to have to give up something very important to him in order to live his life.

"I might add the only reason this is happening is because women's sports are already full of lesbians because lesbians like to do mannish things more than straight women do."

Nobody said anything about lesbians playing college basketball, we're talking about a trans man who has to play on a woman's team. You're making broad and unsupportable statements about lesbians in college sports based solely on broken homophobic stereotypes of lesbians being "mannish". You're also assuming that all lesbians who play college sports are masculine, which flat out isn't true.

"Just goes to show that sports are a fundamentally masculine thing and that this Title 9 shit, where you have more women's sports than men's at most colleges now, is completely backwards."

That's no proof of anything. If it is proof of anything it's that you're up to your eyeballs in BS.
