Navy Chief Breaks with McCain, Praises Pentagon 'DADT' Report

Admiral Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations, has dropped the hesitancy he had over 'DADT repeal' following his review of the Pentagon's study of the issue, and suggested he is now aboard legislative repeal of the measure.

Roughead The National Journal reports that Roughead is now urging McCain to act:

“I think the survey, without question, was the most expansive survey of the American military that’s ever been undertaken,” Roughead said during an interview Saturday aboard his plane. “I think the work that has been done is extraordinary.”

Roughead, who was returning to Washington from Wilmington, N.C., where he attended the commissioning of the newest Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, said he is still looking over the report before determining his “thoughts and views,” which he will share in the coming days with Gates.

“I’ve done a review [of the report] and now I’m just trying to put it all in context,” he said.

As the Pentagon wraps up the months-long review, Roughead’s statements provide insight into how seriously many top officials are taking the report and the weight they are giving the survey of active-duty troops and their families.

The four-star admiral joined the chiefs of the other military services in May in sending individual letters to Senate Armed Services ranking member John McCain, R-Ariz., imploring lawmakers to delay acting on the issue until the Pentagon completed its review. This would enable the services to plan on an orderly implementation of a change in the law, they said.

The Wonk Room reports: "McCain frequently cited Roughead’s opposition and that of the the other service chiefs to slow down the legislative repeal process."

Roughead has changed his tune: “I’m eager to see where it goes on the Hill."

  1. I can not WAIT to hear McCain's response to this one - maybe he'll plug his ears and stamp his little feet.

  2. McCain is being left alone now on his position about DADT. I can picture him now like the angry, old man that lives in a house up the hill all alone and walking with a cane.

  3. Of call the service chiefs he was the most quiet on this. And to be honest, to me he always seemed the most likely to be in favor. For example he was completely in favor of women serving on submarines when politicians decided that. That's not the usual attitude you expect from these people.

  4. McCain is a dinosaur. Luckily, that mindset is facing extinction.

  5. Senator McCain continues to disappoint the people of the United States. He should be standing up for real American values, such as freedom of expression and equality. Instead, McCain continues to support inequality and 2nd-class citizenship status for gays and lesbians. McCain needs to wise-up and stop supporting bigotry.

  6. So it is now the Chairman of the JSC, the Air Force and the Navy on our side, and the Marines and the Army against us. If the report can cause the Army to swing over to our side, that should really kill McCain's strategy. But I can't see that we will ever get the Marine commandant on our side, since Obama chose a fierce anti-gay advocate as a Marine chief.

  7. As a gay Vietnam veteran who served honorably, toward the end of the draft, and who served along with other gays in the USAF, Army and Navy, as well as with some not so closeted gay NATO forces in Belgium, I am appalled that Senator McCain is betraying his brothers and sisters by pandering to the right wing of his party and rejecting his gay military colleagues. It is unforgivable. Lt. Dan Choi is my brother. John McCain is not. That is how strongly I feel on this issue.

  9. Pathetic McCain will do ANYTHING for a vote ( how else can you explain the Palin fiasco) Nice to see there are actually some men with brains in our armed forces.

  10. Until all the old folks are dead and gone..or at least made to feel enlightened with the thoughts of gays being equal we are fighting for our very lives on the streets and battlefields..thank god the young are questioning what is being taught them..we are teaching our children to question everything. do not accept others truths..our youth will be our saving grace towards acceptance.

  11. I am beginning to believe that John McCain is a severely closeted gay. His short stint of active duty, and his long isolated prisoner status prevented him from having a normal military experience, or sexual awakening experience. Now, he wishes the present military to be hamstrung with DADT because of his own personal frustrations.
