Mark Zuckerberg Named Time's 'Person of the Year'

26-year-old Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has been named Time's "Person of the Year" for 2010:

"In less than seven years, Zuckerberg wired together a twelfth of humanity into a single network, thereby creating a social entity almost twice as large as the U.S. If Facebook were a country it would be the third largest, behind only China and India. It started out as a lark, a diversion, but it has turned into something real, something that has changed the way human beings relate to one another on a species-wide scale. We are now running our social lives through a for-profit network that, on paper at least, has made Zuckerberg a billionaire six times over."

Zuckerberg beat out Julian Assange, the Tea Party, Hamid Karzai, and the Chilean Miners for the honor.

  1. Yes, that's the right choice. Facebook has made a huge impact in our society. Plus, Zuckerberg has been donating huge chunks of his fortune for charitable works.

  2. Maybe he could use a very small chunk of his fortune to deal with his skin issues.

Wonder if he would have been chosen without the Social Network?

  3. Gosh, that has to be one of the least flattering photos I have ever seen. I think H.P. Lovecraft called it "the Innsmouth look."

  4. That 'look' is called NORMAL. He looks normal; not photo-shopped, airbrushed, caked in make-up,etc., His skin looks fine to me. He's a real human being, not a doll or animation.

WHY are Zuckerberg's pupils always dilated? I've noticed this condition in other photos and vids.

  5. I'd go for Oprah this year...

  7. 2 years down the road and TIME will be proclaiming "Twitter is so neat!", while everyone is using the next big "thing".

  8. Lame. FB was last year's big thing, not this year.

The newsmaker of this year should have been the unnameable guy from Wikileak. Self-censorship in effect.

  10. Unnameable guy from Wikileak? Do you mean Julian Assange or Bradley Manning?

Or are you talking about (whisper) Voldemort?

  15. TIME in 2010 is a joke. Like Newsweek, It's heyday is gone and it has little relevance. They are obviously sucking-up to Mr. Sunshine. Who knows what went on behind the scenes *cough*.

  16. Please don't say mean things about my lover.

  17. Pupil dilation reflects drug use. I imagine he's on some type of stimulants, legal or not, because I doubt he sleeps much. Those also screw up your skin.

  18. If you think his eyes here are dilated as a result of drug use, then you never went to the Roxy in the late 90s.

Come on, Paul, falling for ratbastard's bait? You always strike me as smarter than that. :)

  19. @Ratbastard. "Normal" for a Deep One maybe. His eyes are dilated because he is being called back to the depths of the sea, to worship at the sunken altar of Father Dagon and Mother Hydra. Look it up.

  20. Is he balding? The Ceasar cut is a dead give away. Hope he doesn't opt for a hairpiece.

  21. If the aspect ratio is correct on that picture, perhaps he should consider longer bangs.

  22. Shoulda been Assange.

  23. @Paul R: Since when are moles / freckles a "skin issue"? You're an idiot.

    Posted by: virtualdespot | Dec 15, 2010 1:44:30 PM

  24. OUCH, homodm. Time is an irrelevant publication written for people who don't read, don't like to, and don't know how to (and no, I don't mean illiterates--but damn close). It's right up there with usa today. That said, I couldn't care less.

  25. @Ratbastard
"Why are Zuckerberg's pupils always dilated?"

It's because he rarely blinks. The New Yorker, 60 Minutes and Wired Magazine pointed this out, too. It's a bit strange, to say the least :)
