Watch: Janet Napolitano Tells Walmart Shoppers to Look for 'Suspicious' Activity in Video to Air at Checkout Counter

Napolitano

If you see something suspicious in the parking lot or in the store, say something immediately. Report suspicious activity to your local police or sheriff. If you need help, ask a Walmart manager for assistance," says Janet Napolitano in a new DHS video:

"It's part of a new Department of Homeland Security program that could see Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano's face on video screens in malls, retail outlets and hotels across the United States. The Walmart video, which will soon be launched at 230 locations nationwide and may eventually be expanded to nearly 600 locations in 27 states, features Napolitano thanking the retailer by name for participating in the program."

  4. They wouldn't air this unless the big bad boogy man was out there, right? Keep the ignorant masses afraid.

In 25 years, we are going to look at this the way we now look at the McCarthy years, with shame. Too bad we have to wait 25 years.

Yes, do that. Because all those cameras on top each every Walmart...are NOT manned most of the time. The cameras at Walmart exist to spy on EMPLOYEES not to protect their shoppers. Don't be fooled into thinking you're safe in a Walmart parking lot.

  6. What exactly is "suspicious activity"? To a lot of people, that's a black person in Lake Forest, or 2 guys holding hands.

  9. We Canadians loathe Janet Napolitano because when she was here she repeated the lie that 9/11 terrorists had come through the Canadian border (all were legal U.S. residents). When questioned, she did not back down but insisted that terrorists had come from Canada through the porous border (they haven't)

Your country is maybe right to be paranoid after 9/11, but you consistently make the problem worse not better.

  11. So, the chain of command is local police, sheriff, Walmart manager. Got it.

  15. Ummm, these are the very people freaking out already when a Sikh walks in a Walmart. This is PR crap to tell the sheeple HomeLand Sec. is doing there job.

  16. Im normally not prone to making 1984 references (it feels a bit Godwinesque) - but this does seem vaugely like a two-minute-hate type scenario.

  17. Dear Janet Napolitano,

I was under the mistaken impression that Homeland Security was established to make life safer for US citizens...not scarier.

    Yours Truly,

  18. Sounds like "Committees for the Defense of the Homeland" or something like that. So, now we're asking Wal-Mart customers to report suspicious activity? Um, why do I think that's not an idea whose time has come?

  19. Conflicted, One one hand I do not approve of a nosy neighbor state, on the other, I bet a lot of crime stems from the parking lots of walmart...

  20. Big Sister is watching and wants Wal-Mart shoppers to help her to watch EVERYBODY!

How long before paranoia-engendering screens are EVERYWHERE?

AND WE'RE PAYING FOR THIS KRAP.

  21. I hate to be an east coast liberal elitist snob, and even worse a New Yorker ( albeit one who worked at 7 WTC that fateful day) this will serve no useful purpose other than just to freak the f*** out of those people looking for terrorists activity in a local Walmart parking lot. Terrorist groups don't give a damn about the Walmart in the middle of Bumf*** Georgia, or Iowa or so on, that is not where they will strike next, it will be in major urban areas let's allocate our resources accordingly.

It's a fact of life. We've had these ads in UK on buses, tv, subways, newspapers for years. Every British citizen knows the phrase "If you suspect it report it."

    Posted by: Luke | Dec 7, 2010 2:53:48 PM

  23. Yeah I don't understand what the big deal is. No one is required to watch the video, and walmart opted-in to airing it. How is that at all big brother? If you don't like it, don't report suspicious activity...that'll stick it to the man.

  24. "If you see something suspicious in the parking lot or in the store, say something immediately."

Sir, I found something very, very odd in aisle 7. There was a box on the shelf that said, "Made in America" on it...

  25. Posting from Canada, all I can say is WTF America??? WTF is happening to you?
