Congresswoman Among Those Shot In Arizona

Ariz
A gunman shot and injured several people, including Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, this morning at a Safeway supermarket in Tuscon. According to The Tuscon Citizen, 40-year-old Giffords, who was holding an event at the store, was shot in the head at close range.

NPR reports:

Gg U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event, Arizona Public Media reported Saturday. The Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at the Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

At least five other people, including members of her staff, were hurt. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson. Her condition was not immediately known. Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up firing indiscriminately and then ran off, Michaels said. According to other witnesses, he was tackled by a bystander and taken into custody.

CNN is reporting that at least 12 people have been wounded.

Last year, Politico reported that the Congresswoman's office was vandalised, post-health care vote.

Update: Several news outlets, including Reuters and NPR, are now reporting that Giffords has succumbed to her injuries. At least one person has been confirmed dead. Six people, including U.S. District Judge John Roll and a nine-year-old girl, are now confirmed dead.

Some encouraging news about Gifford's condition: The aforementioned news outlets have now retracted their prior statements about her death. She is apparently in surgery, yet in very serious condition. Her surgeon has stated that he is "optimisitc" about her condition.

President Obama responds to the tragedy: "This morning, in an unspeakable tragedy, a number of Americans were shot in Tucson, Arizona, at a constituent meeting with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. And while we are continuing to receive information, we know that some have passed away, and that Representative Giffords is gravely wounded. We do not yet have all the answers. What we do know is that such a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society. I ask all Americans to join me and Michelle in keeping Representative Giffords, the victims of this tragedy, and their families in our prayers"

  2. 1. It's being reported that this Congresswoman was one of the candidates with a "bullseye" on Palin's notorious target list and graphic of the last year.

... eagerly awaiting the next tweet from Wasilla.

    2. Anyone want to venture a guess as to the shooter's moniker that he's registered on that cesspool, "Free" Republic?

  4. The Republican propaganda machine has blood on their hands today. The past year has been full of lies about Giffords, a moderate and a popular representative.

  5. Local updates available at azcentral dot com - the Phoenix newspaper - but they're not reporting much yet.

I'm so glad I don't live in Arizona any more. It's a scary place for any thinking, reasonable human being.

  7. This is sad news, regardless of what party you are. Lets not take the low road and blame any party affiliation. Lets all keep her family in our thoughts.

  11. Those poor people...

And, yes, the GOP rhetoric machine is once again soaked in blood --Palin and her “crosshairs” campaign, especially. This is what irresponsible rabble-rousing will get you.

  12. what a horrible tragedy. :(

  13. You know what, gayforthegop, this isn't hate. That's too easy for you to rationalize this. This is just people contemplating what the 24 hour paranoid freakout that is the Fox News channel and the modern GOP has led to.

I don't hate Glenn Beck or Limbaugh or Fox News; I do however think their overheated rhetoric is a dog whistle that nuts like the one who attacked today respond to.

I think they inspired this idiot and gave him a rationale. Sarah Palin's gun sights didn't help either, did they?

  14. News Update....A source said she is still alive. Lets hope this is true. Although, they are saying critical condition.

There is major rhetoric on the other side...however that does not cause people to act in violence. People act on their own accord. Its too easy for people to blame everyone other than the actual suspect. Plus, you have NO clue if this is political or just some nut wanting to make a splash. Or an illegal alien upset with her. So until you know ALL the facts, STOP THE BLAMING.

  15. Here's a screengrab of Sarah Palin's website, which is now conveniently down. Rifle sights used to target congresspersons: http://twitpic.com/3o7jql

If this isn't an insight to violence, I'm not sure what is.

  16. Well Sharron Angle said we may need second amendment remedies "if we don't win at the ballot box."

    Sarah Palin: Don't retreat, reload!

My thoughts are with the families.

  17. Sorry, GayforGOP, whining denial is not going to work in this instance. The Republican propaganda machine is fully complicit in fanning the flames of hate that resulted in this tragedy. What's pathetic is those that worship at the altar of Mammon while innocents are slaughtered. Wake up!

  18. People need not to jump to conclusions on her death, she is currently in surgery. Geez.

Posted by: Brian in Texas | Jan 8, 2011 2:57:38 PM

  19. Check out the SarahPac graphic, before it's taken down. Hate? This is not a hateful post; it's evidence for conspiracy to murder.

  20. So this is what the Tea Party revolution will look like. If they can't win at the ballot box, start shooting.

    Posted by: niles | Jan 8, 2011 3:08:41 PM

  21. GAYFORGOP, how dare you claim these commenters have "hate" when Sarah Palin and the mainstream of the Republican Party have endorsed bullshit like putting targets on people's names and going on about "2nd Amendment remedies?" True, we don't yet know who the killer is. But it was done TO her AT a political event. It seems likely to be politically motivated.

This is not hate, this is a reaction against hate speech that leads to stuff like this. But you don't care as long as your taxes are low and no brown people are getting any government support, right? Pathetic.

  22. shooter = white male, mid 20s...a savage.

    Posted by: Jay | Jan 8, 2011 3:21:59 PM

  23. ok GayforGOP--do you really want to defend putting targets on politicians who (surprise!) end up shot??? Do you want to defend slogans like "Don't retreat, reload!" and "second amendment remedies"??? Please, please, please explain how those things are ok? If you cannot condemn such clearly reprehensible acts, you will find no sympathy here.

    Posted by: StillmarriedinCA | Jan 8, 2011 3:26:57 PM

  24. Folk we don't know a thing about the shooter(s). Can we please wait for some facts before throwing around accusations?

    Posted by: justiceontherocks | Jan 8, 2011 3:28:48 PM

  25. Friggin' teabagger nutjobs. Damn them. Their rhetoric lead directly to this outrage.

Oh, and GayforGOP - STFU, quisling.
