Rick Santorum Discusses His Messy, Sticky Google Issue

Santorum

Rick Santorum spoke with Roll Call about what happens when you Google his name — the first result that comes up is this website which was created by Dan Savage in 2003 in response to Santorum's anti-gay remarks.

Said Santorum to Roll Call:

“It’s one guy. You know who it is. The Internet allows for this type of vulgarity to circulate. It’s unfortunate that we have someone who obviously has some issues. But he has an opportunity to speak."

But really, what's more vulgar, this, or Santorum's own remarks which inspired it:

"Then the third-most-powerful Republican in the Senate, Santorum told the Associated Press that April that gay sex could 'undermine the fabric of our society.' The interview touched on a Supreme Court case related to sexual privacy, and Santorum compared homosexual acts to allowing for 'man on child, man on dog' relationships.

Santorum says he has never contacted Google to try to fix it.

  1. Why bother? If something AIN'T broke, don't FIX it.

  2. Why is that funny? I completely disagree with Rick Santorum. However, I am offended by that. If the shoe were on the other foot and it was a "SAVAGE", people would be screaming! The Anti defamation league would be rending their garments.

This Kind of childish, hateful behavior does nothing to help Gay men and women.
Mr. Savage DOES NOT speak for this out, proud Pennsylvanian.

  3. The best protection from Santorum is a heavy duty condom. Unfortunately there's not much you can do about Savage. He means well, I think.

  4. Yeah, pass the smelling salts, Aunt Nelly, it's SO offensive.

How DARE someone use humor to slap back at someone supporting real legislation that tangibly denigrates and makes people second-class citizens.

I am just shaken to my very core.

  5. @HA: if the website did not move past the definition and then list accurate information on his hateful rants and religious based bigotry, then I would agree with you.

does anyone know if we can donate money to dan or someone to ensure the website does not get taken down?

  6. If I were Rick, from now on I would stay away from saying things like 'undermine the fabric of our society' because, in my experience, santorum also undermines fabric. Hard to get that stain out!

  7. Every time I listen to Rick Santorum blabber I feel the need to take a shower. Anyone who obsesses about man-on-dog sex is just plain weird.

  8. @HA! Well Mr Savage DOES speak for this out, proud Pennsylvanian.

  9. As a former Pennsylvanian, i can assure you that the only thing that smells worse than santorum is Rick Santorum.

I think this is the funniest thing evar. I hope the website remains active, i hope that the term "santorum" always ranks above Rick Santorum on Google search results and i hope no one forgets the bile and hatred repeatedly spewed by this idiot.

Rick Santorum tries to play it down but I know that the existence of this term and the website is KILLING him inside and that makes me really happy.

Call me a bitter queen; I don't care. I'm sick of these self-righteous, religious hypocrites using a public platform to bash the LGBT community. If we're all lucky, Santorum's political career is over.

  10. Actually the link is not #4 when you google - it had been forgotten for a while.

Make sure to Google Rick Santorum and click on that link first --- lets get it back on top!

  11. "Santorum says he has never contacted Google to try to fix it."

Why are you parroting GOP spin? There's nothing to fix. It's not broken. Santorum is employing a Sarah Palin tactic to make the messenger the problem and thus deflect attention from himself.

Google will not change the results no matter what Santorum says or attempts. They ignore requests to doctor their results.

  12. @Reality 101: DONE. Also did Bing.

  13. Rick Santorum is a product of the worst influences of catholic education and dogma. His political opinions are heavily dependent on what he has been taught and believes. He is at the same time completely blind to the oppressive nature & destructive force of the catholic church he holds so dear. More power to Dan Savage & for a hilarious video on catholic scandal, see:

  14. Just one more reason I love Dan Savage, he can speak for this out proud NYC queer anytime. As for the uptight right wing trolls who bring their self hate here, go back to Fox sites where you are loved.

  15. Dan Savage is one of the most media-savvy people out there. At the university where I work, students know that he is the gay guy behind Savage Love, It Gets Better, and yes... the word "santorum." Savage has done nothing but help our tribe through his masterful use of the media.
As for his humor... you may have dainty little sensibilities, but the real punchline is that Santorum has had to address his dirty little google problem. Kudos, Dan!

  16. Can't we please do something like this for Palin to help that woman go away?

  17. Love Savage.

Santorum gets the complete lack of respect he deserves.

  18. why do all these bigots always play the victim card? they say whatever they like wherever they like and when someone challenges them or goes back at them they become the victim ie palin bachmann odonnell. they then go faux news and cry for one of their cheerleaders and tell how wronged they are.

  19. Anyone who knows anything about the way that Google search results are calculated knows that the news that is generated about this issue every time that it comes up pretty much guarantees that it will stay at the top of the search rankings. Google not only tracks clicks, it also tracks links and mentions on other websites, so the story on the Roll Call site, as well as all of the stories about the Roll Call story just perpetuate its rankings. Rick Santorum should simply stop talking about it. If he ever did push Google to override their organic results (something that I cannot imagine they'd ever do), it would just create a lot more news/controversy about it, further elevating it in Google rankings. I see no escape for him. HA HA!!

And people like HA! need to to relax. This is funny. Thank God for people like Dan Savage.

  22. wasn't it Dan Savage's mostly-straight readers (and not Savage himself) who assigned mr. Santorum that title?

let's be honest: Mr. Santorum EARNED the title of "santorum." it's like the modern equivalent to having the name "mud." Santorum is santorum, and yes, it's disgusting, vile. hence the name, this "man."

i'm thinking about doing a daily Google for "santorum" and clicking the proper link--as my vote to Google and duty as a human for decency or something :-)

  23. It shows how clueless Santorum is about the sexual practices of most 15-40 year old American straight couples - most of them prefer anal sex to vaginal. I have been listening to Dr. Drews nightly radio show "Loveline" for years and most of straight people in their teens and twenties are calling about anal. So, it' clearly not just a gay sex thang..

  24. Thank you, Dan, for putting "santorum" into the lexicon of extreme homophobic persons. I, for one, applaud your deed.
