Kathy Griffin: Palin Army Would Never Survive Against the Gay Army
On Kathy Griffin's Bravo special which aired last night, she discussed death threats made against her by Sarah Palin's "Army", but Griffin suggested she had stronger troops on her side:
"The Palin Army probably could never really survive against the Gay Army. Because we don't need guns. We have sarcasm and we have snark and we have our verbal [beep] rapier wit and, dammit, that's how we conquer."
Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

She is our Malcolm X.

Did they really bleep the word "rapier"?

They bleeped 'rapier'? WTF?

LOVES me some Kathy Griffin!

She's not usually laugh out loud funny, but she's the one we want on our side. Can't believe the Christian conservatives call in death threats to her. Ideas (and truth) can be more dangerous than guns.

Why is it ok for Kathy Griffin to assume all gays are "sarcastic" and have "rapier wit/snark", but we are all upset when others assume all gays are fashion and sex-obsessed queens? Frankly, I would rather be a part of an army that uses guns than one that has a clever quip in their arsenal.

PERHAPS, she means well, but I am offended by her depiction of gay men as effeminate, finger-snapping, snippy, quasi-women "girlfriends." She seems to have an archaic view of gay men (she doesnt even acknowledge bi men) as some type of girlish half-men who are there to amuse and befriend her and other women. She has no notion of a masculine, mainstream gay or bisexual dude. As such, she reinforces ancient, erroneous stereotypes about bisexual and gay men, and is far from a progressive voice.

Masculine mainstream gay? Piss off. I really wish that internally homophobic gays were just not allowed to speak. The only thing erroneous is the bullshit idea that gay guys ought to aspire to be normal like straight guys.
Kathy is sharp and she's a great voice to remind us and the public just how stupid and laughable the Palins are. http://www.flickr.com/photos/vertub/

Funny. What will the Palin army say and do now?
@Javier, you're entitled to be offended, but I don't think there is a reason.

@Bingbo
I cosign with you. Anyone who clings to the identity of "straight acting" is clearly suffering from internalized homophobia.
I'm not saying that all gay people need to act as some homogenous group, but to feel the need to identify as "straight acting" repeatedly is a sign that you feel that you need to maintain gender based norms and ideas, all of which are artificial social constructions btw. It's bullshit.
Masculine mainstream gay. Somebody hates a part of himself.

I hope this isn't a generation gap. I'll never hit forty unless I back into it, but many guys my age had/have women that preferred to hang out with the gay guys. They were/are usually more gay than we were. If we were using one liners, so were they. I wish I did have rapier wit, because many of those women do. Kathy is sort of the queen of the fruit flies (I do prefer that to the term f*g h*g).
@Javier, our cat is named Girlfriend.

And if all else fails, we can just blow kisses at them and watch them flee in panic!
The gays are coming, the gays are coming!!!

"Frankly, I would rather be a part of an army that uses guns than one that has a clever quip in their arsenal."
But how could that joke be worked into a standup comedy act?

Why not both ? I can shoot straighter than palin and her pals and have at least twice the brain power as any of them( I realize that's not saying much)
Posted by: jerry | Mar 18, 2011 11:43:37 AM
I agree with Jerry. Why not both? In fact, though we have truth on our side, given the disrespect so many in this country have for knowledge -- including most supporters and leaders of the Tea Party movement and the Republican Party -- I wouldn't want to rely on just brain power.

I know that Towleroad commenters tend to be more stereotypically gay or effeminate than the average gay or bi dude, but it is just as offensive that SOME of you associate being masculine with being straight, acting straight, or trying to fit in. No, many gay and bisexual men are naturally, innately masculine. It's not an act nor an attempt to be normal, just as effeminate males claim that they are naturally non-masculine.
Posted by: Javier | Mar 18, 2011 12:18:45 PM
Towleroad commentators don't "tend" to be anything.
Some people in here are obsessed with making declarations of how "straight-acting" they are. Does that mean that those who don't run around like the "Sassy Gay Friend" guy 24/7?
Please. We are a wide variety of people. And the only thing we have in common is that we like to do it with other guys.
And are obsessed with Sondheim.

It's hilarious, the number of gay people on this forum who have no sense of humor about being gay - even in the context of a stand-up comedy act! Lighten up, bitches.
Second: The effeminate homosexual is not an 'archaic' concept, it exists in the past, present, and most likely, the future too. Pity that you're just as narrow-minded on the concept of diversity as the bigots you defend in the name of bashing people who advocate for our equal rights.

David,
LOL!
Guilty.

Also, not everyone who plays for a particular team is absent guns. Sadly, a harsh reality in this day and age, but an essential element in order to prevent tragedy and to stand up for our rights as citizens and taxpayers.
Armed gays tend not to get bashed. Just a statement of fact, not political calculus one way or the other.
If the extremists on one side see it as their divine mission to murder abortion providers in order to impose their religionist views, it is not a stretch to imagine more violent actions against legally married same-sex couples which are anathema to them and a constant irritant.
Not peddling paranoia. Just safety. Want all of us to enjoy grandchildren and the comforts of old age.

What/who is Soundheim?

"I know that Towleroad commenters tend to be more stereotypically gay or effeminate than the average gay or bi dude . . . "
Really, Javier? Dude, like can you see through the screen that I'm running around my study in a pink feather boa screaming "Soundheim" (or Tammy Wynette, us queens have eclectic tastes!) and tweezing my eyebrows? You must have very special powers!
I'm sure one could make stereotypical assessments of you based on your fake screen name, but for all we know you could be Sarah Palin.

I'm not stereotypically anything. When they made me, they threw away the mold. Or maybe they shot my father. I forget which. Whatever I am, it made my husband happy. It also makes me happy.
"What/who is Soundheim?"
Really? Really? You just offended many show tune queens. Also, you apparently know nothing about Google.

I love her. But if she is "our Malcom X" I want to know why she is tweeting us to watch Trump's Celebrity Apprentice each week? WTF?
