Barnes and Noble Censors Shirtless Androgynous Male Model for Looking Too Much Like a Woman

Pejic

Androgynous male model Andrej Pejic covers the latest issue of Dossier magazine, but it's the androgyny he is so well known for that has Barnes & Noble censors covering the magazine with opaque poly bags.

Said Dossier Co-Founder and Creative Director Skye Parrott to the Huffington Post:

"It's a naked man on the cover of a magazine, which is done all of the time without being covered up, so I definitely don't think it merits this, but I understand what it is...It's not a coincidence that it's only the giant U.S. chain stores that are asking us to do this....It's only the American copies that are being censored. It seems that it probably made people uncomfortable. But that's part of what's interesting about the cover, I think, is that it's playing with those ideas of gender roles. He's topless, you can see that he's a man, but if you look at his face, he looks like a woman and he's so beautiful, he's both in that picture, in a way. I think that's what's interesting about it."

  2. Hece is perfect.

And breasts aren't vulgar, so, a quick fix is stop vulgarizing them and also stop enabling unhealthy habits to look like shirtless and photoshopped male cover models.

Except Chad White. He is also perfect.

  3. Tom but he has an Adams apple.....

  4. I spend LOTS of money at Barnes & Noble... they had better make this right or I'll be taking my business to the MUCH less expensive Best Buy!

  5. Apple or not, he still looks too girlie for me

  6. Who cares if he looks like a girl? I'm not even sure that a topless female model should be censored in this context, let alone an "androgynous male model". Ridiculous.

  7. Unacceptable. Better see a change here immediately.

  8. He looks like a female to me as well. Should it be covered up? No. But do media outlets routinely cover up the naked female breast? Yes. The magazine is loving this "controversy" because until now no one has heard of Dossier.

  9. He looks more female than most of the women around here. Bigger tits as well (except the really fat women). Seriously though it is more the trans confusion people suffer from (not the trans people, they people looking at them i mean) that they are objecting to rather than the toplessness of the picture. People dont like to be challenged.

  10. What I find challenging is that he's a Serb!

  11. I'll try this again.

His beauty is not just androgynous, it is exquisite. He looks like a very young Ingrid Bergman.

He reminds me of the character Giton in Satyricon. A youth so beautiful that gladiators fought over him.

  12. KEVINVT, he's a half-Serb half-Croat refugee from Bosnia to make it even more interesting. Check out this video on youtube where he visits his grandmother in a Serbian village. It's spectacular.

  13. "...he's so beautiful"???!

    Please. Malnutrition is not beautiful.

  14. Anyone who thinks that this looks like a woman, even in the face, obviously hasn't seen too many women.

  15. Obsessed. I met him twice during fashion week and was completely starstruck both times. I never go daft around celebrities but he's just ridiculously beautiful.

  16. Through that stupid decision Barnes and Noble has just perfumed itself with the stench of utter rancidity. Smells more like barn than nobility.

  17. Dude looks like a lady.

But why would they cover up anything, male or female unless it was pornographic? (which this certainly is not)

Isn't society way past this kind of prudish behavior? Poor U.S., always backwards steps instead of forward ones when it comes to sexuality.

  18. Denison, seriously? Get a grip.

You put long brown hair and a cute little lace blouse on him and it's Brooke Shields, circa 1980. ESPECIALLY in the face!

    Posted by: johnny | May 17, 2011 6:47:04 PM

  19. Not even remotely beautiful. Disgusting. I can't figure out which is worse- his bushy eyebrows, sagging stomach or bony clavicle and stick arms... gross

  20. I think the problem is it looks like an underaged and undeveloped female, and could be considered exploitive and pervy by certain sickos.

    Posted by: brent | May 17, 2011 8:48:10 PM

  21. Im not really seeing the beauty either. Maybe beauty in a model/clothing industry kind of way, but thats not real beauty, its underdeveloped and starving. Seriously, get this guy a sandwich.

    Posted by: rovex | May 18, 2011 5:30:35 AM

  22. Love the face. The body ... not so much. How can someone look skinny AND saggy at the same time, without suffering from starvation or disease? But that cover is hardly something the public needs to be protected from seeing. It's not a pornographic or even erotic picture. It's just a feminine young man, who needs to eat something.

As for the breasts, they remind me of an androgynous mannequin that Macy's had in their window, which caused an uproar for having a male chest whose nipples were too pointy. Seeing other photos of his chest which do not look like this, I suspect the photographer emphasized their femininity for this effect. I don't really have a point or anything about all this, but maybe someone else does.

  23. Be glad they're still selling it. Amazone did remove homoerotic content that wasn't even that explicit. And if you want to see censorship, try to order erotic stuff from the US while living in Canada. Boarders are harsh on ero comics. So really, I find stupid that they censor a magazine cover because it displays a topless androgynous, but for God's sake! Get over it, it could have been worst, like shutting it down or refusing to sell it.

  24. this should not be censored! he is a male model that just happens to look like a very beautiful female woman. people shouldn't be so judgmental and they should be thankful that at least we get to see this man expressing who he really is.
