Gay Man Killed in Puerto Rico is Third LGBT Person Murdered There in 72 Hours, 18th in Past 18 Months

Michael Lavers at EDGE reports on some extremely disturbing events in Puerto Rico over the last 72 hours:

Salgado “Primera Hora” reported earlier tonight that Ramón “Moncho” Salgado was found dead along the side of a highway in Humacao on the island’s eastern coast. Thomas J. Bryan Picó, executive director of la Fundación Gaviota, told the newspaper that Salgado was a 46-year-old gay man who lived in Humacao. “Primera Hora” reported that Salgado’s body showed signs of blunt trauma.

Bryan pointed out that Salgado is the third LGBT Puerto Rican who has been found dead in 72 hours. As EDGE reported late Monday, June 6, a transgender woman was found shot to death in a Santurce intersection. Karlota Gómez Sánchez’s body was discovered roughly 48 hours after Alejandro Torres Torres was found stabbed to death in Ponce.

In the past year and a half, 18 LGBT individuals have been killed in Puerto Rico, according to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, which released this statement from National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Communications Manager and Puerto Rico Para Tod@s founder Pedro Julio Serrano:

“The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force stands in solidarity with the LGBT community in Puerto Rico and sends its deepest condolences to the families and friends of Karlota Gómez Sánchez, Ramón Salgado and Alejandro Torres Torres. As someone who grew up in Puerto Rico and has been very active in its LGBT community, this is a heart-wrenching moment. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to all of the victims’ loved ones at this difficult time. Justice must prevail. This is about members of the Puerto Rican LGBT community feeling safe in their communities and being able to take care of the ones they love. We call upon the authorities and political leaders to effectively address this epidemic of anti-LGBT violence. This must stop now.”

  1. I have been in PR several times and I found it a very gay-friendly place...

This news are shocking to me

  2. No doubt these murders may be connected with gay sex trysts. I always tell the upcoming queens to please take it to the baths if you run into a hot piece of ass. Sure it costs a few bucks extra but it will save your life. Be careful out there.

  3. Wonder if ricki Martin would ever speak against these? Yeah, exactly.

  4. It's not the 18th. There's MANY that go unreported. I just had a good friend murdered in Hungary. They found his body under a bridge.

  5. 18 in 18 months. Gee, something else that bleeds once a month yet refuses to die.

  6. Puerto Rico is submerged under a wave of criminality. A shamelessly corrupt government coupled with the economic recession has made criminality even worse. People are just being killed left and right, gay and straight. I think crimes against LGBT are being reported on more frequently, which, ironically speaks to the fact that people in PR are becoming more gay-friendly. The government, however, is NOT LGBT friendly. But the governing party will not win re-elections.

  8. The murder rate in Puerto Rico is a dramatic situation that is getting worse and worse. As for it being gay friendly, it's average, definitely not a gay haven. Hopefully something drastic is done to stop these senseless murders in P.R. Best wishes go out to the families of the victims.

  9. @Rowan Re: "Wonder if ricki Martin would ever speak against these? Yeah, exactly."

He has. Repeatedly. And has said that one of the reasons he finally decided to come out was that he couldn't stand silent in light of these murders and, particularly, that of Jorge Steven López Mercado.

  10. @ROWAN: Ricky Martin has spoken out "against these".

As for PR, lovely place, lovely people, racked by soaring crime (drug-related; PR is a major transit for drugs coming up from SA), illegal immigration (Haitians and Dominicans, mostly), high unemployment, budget cuts, public assistance cuts, disaffected youth influenced by a prevailing "thug" culture and a rising, fanatical evangelical movement that has fanned the flames of anti-gay bigotry heavily in the last few years (the island's governor is a fervent, homophobic evangelical and the evangie-fundies dominate the PR legislature).

Regardless, PR is still a beautiful place. My condolences go out to the families of the victims.
