Rudy Giuliani Breaks Promise to Marry Gay Friends Who Opened Home to Him During His Divorce

Rudy Giuliani reportedly offered to marry Howard Koeppel and Mark Hsiao, the gay couple who opened their home to the former NYC mayor during his divorce, if same-sex marriage was ever legalized in New York.

Koeppel_hsiao Now that it has, Giuliani won't return their calls, the NY Post reports:

"I asked if he would marry us," recalled Howard Koeppel, the unlikely provider of an emergency Midtown crash pad to Giuliani for six months when his marriage to Donna Hanover was crumbling and Gracie Mansion was a war zone.

"He said, 'Howard, I don't ever do anything that's not legal. If it becomes legal in New York, you'll be one of the first ones I would marry.' "

Ten years later, Koeppel is distressed that his former house guest hasn't returned the many calls he began making before the legislation was passed last week. "It seems like a lot of people he was close to become persona non grata," Koeppel observed.

Koeppel and Hsiao were married in 2009 in Connecticut but want to repeat the ceremony in their home state.

At the 2009 ceremony Giuliani was a last minute no-show, but the couple had defended his anti-equality position a few weeks beforehand: "He isn't an advocate for gay marriage because of his religious beliefs. He is a traditional Catholic. Those teachings say marriage should be between a man and a woman."

Said Giuliani on Monday about the passage of marriage equality: "I'm glad that people who felt discriminated against have that, sort of, burden of discrimination lifted."

  1. Well someone's not likely to get a Christmas card from the Koeppel/Hsiao family this year.

    What a tool.

  2. How can Guiliani be a traditional Catholic if he divorced and remarried while his former wife is still alive--which is against church law? I guess his Catholic convictions only kick in when others are involved.

  3. What I can't understand is why NYC, which is 70% Liberal Democrat keeps electing these pig Republicans as Mayor. Bloomberg might have been on our side for marriage equality but he is turning NYC into a suburb and he has no idea what makes this city great.

  4. Wow, I'm simply shocked that Giuliani is a lying political opportunist who exploits people and has no decency. Shocked, I tell you! Who ever could have guessed this??

In other news, water is wet.

  5. Catholics cannot be divorced nor can they scrump people outside of marriage.

    Giuliani is a dick.

  6. It is simply remarkable to me how somebody who had so much good will directed at them could have squandered it so completely within the course of ten years.

  7. Catholics can't be divorced but if they're celebrities willing to do the church's bidding they can get their marriage annulled.

Newt Gingrch got his three previous marriages annulled. That's to say that in the church's eyes THEY NEVER HAPPENED.

And that of course means the children he had in those marriages DO NO EXIST.

    Isn't Catholicism marvy?

  8. Two thoughts:
    1. Anyone who is friends with Giuliani is going to have a hard time getting sympathy from me when they cry that he won't perform their marriage ceremony. I mean... really???
    2. Regarding Giuliani's claim that he doesn't "ever do anything that's not legal," one only needs to look back at the Bernard Kerik fiasco to know that this is probably not true.

  9. Wow... this really paints an ugly picture of Giuliani. To dishonor the hospitality and kindness of these men is an sad move. Ironic that the biblical story of "Sodom & Gomorrah" is really about inhospitality; here we have the gay couple showing kindness and hospitality and the "straight" man showing betrayal and dishonor to friends. The bible story has turned full circle!

  10. This is some negative PR brought up to discourage Rudy from another delusional run for president. He and Bachmann can run on the Neurotics ticket.

  11. Never liked the guy...

But, I'm glad his hypocrisy is on full display.

  12. Giuliani has his presidential ambitions to consider. How is he going to make it in the South Carolina GOP primary when he has homosexuals as friends? During his divorce, his gay friends were mere conveniences; they are now most inconvenient.

  13. god doesn't run the church money does. look at the number of catholics who have two three or more marriages, kids outside marriage, affairs and the church manages to find these okay. why? they are rich, famous and powerful. the church is a pillar of double standards and lies.

  14. Giuliani or any NY Republican 'conservative' is never going to win national office like president. Even 'conservatives' and Republicans in a place like NY or NE is too liberal for most 'conservatives' in other parts of the country.Example: It's inevitable photos and video of a 'conservative' Republican NY politician like mayor of NYC matching in gay pride will surface and their party opponents ill happily exploit the situation.

I don't know how someone like Romney will live down being Governor of Massachusetts when runs for president.

  15. Wow, more gay republicans get a surprise when they find out that they are second class citizens just like poor gay people. Too bad fellas, Im sure you'll find a nice minister to marry you at Banana Republic where you bought those outfits.

  16. Howard Koeppel and Mark Hsiao learned a hard lesson. Piece of advice: just as with Dracula, if a Republican politician shows up on your doorstep do not, under any circumstances, invite him into your house.

In fact, there are many things that Rudy Giuliani and Dracula have in common, one of the most obvious being that neither of those bloodsuckers has a shot in hell of ever being elected President.

  17. So, can they send him a bill for six months rent?

  18. Let's be fair. How different is Giuliani from, say, Obama, whose 1996 questionnaire showed him supporting legal same-sex marriage, but that was when he was running for local dog-catcher. Now his flack says the document is a forgery. And how about Happy Marriage Expert Hillary Clinton, who went out of her way to put the kibosh on marriage equality. After the talk got too hot and heavy about her "right hand" (fill in your own joke here) Huma Abedin and Hillary, the Clintons managed to marry her off to Anthony Wiener. And we know the rest. Leave us face it, we are like the fat girl with overbite at the prom. Privately, both Republicans and Democrats might support full citizenship and equality, or more probably don't even care. But bottom line, as shown by Rudy, they just don't want to be seen with us, especially around election time.

  19. Any successful American politician knows that you need the votes of the ignorant, especially in a primary, so it is best to pander to them. Rudy G. is just doing, or in this case, not doing, what is necessary.

I don't think Rudy could win an election, even in New York, let alone anywhere else in the USA. It's too bad he thinks so.

  20. Dear Rudy Giuliani:

Girlfriend, please. Your kid still refusing to talk to you? Love how the whole country saw what a hot mess you are in 2008 -- what fraction of a percent of the vote did you get in the Republican primaries? Give it up.

    Posted by: J.D. | Jun 29, 2011 11:25:34 PM

  21. Rudy is still a Hot mess today.

  22. What a hypocrite... anyone who has read HOMOTHUG: the Secret Life of Rudy Giuliani, knows he is trying to put distance between him and his many "alternate lifestyle" friends and lovers.
