Gene Robinson: "Christians Should Stay Away From Spiritual Arrogance"

Gene_Robinson Openly gay Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson flew to his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, this weekend to speak to a local church about his journey.

Addressing an audience at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, Bishop Robinson lamented the ongoing use of Christianity to justify anti-gay initiatives, and told the crowd: "I think Christians should stay away from spiritual arrogance and show more love, mercy and zeal for justice."

The Bishop, whose 2003 election to become Bishop coming out shook Episcopal congregations around the world, continued, “I believe that there's a positive role for religion in the world, and we've already seen what not to do."

All too many times...

  1. "I think Christians should stay away from spiritual arrogance and show more love, mercy and zeal for justice."

There are hungry and sick children in need of help. The fact that so much money and influence from these institutions goes instead to fighting love boggles the mind.

  2. A wise man, if Christians acted more like Christ, there would be less suffering in the world.

  3. Correction: Robinson is a native of and spoke in Lexington, KY, located in the heart of Blue Grass country about 70 miles from Louisville.

  4. How about not engaging in nonsense and respecting the truth?

  5. I wish he would name names. Put the haters on the spot. Maybe it would be counter productive, I dunno. But it's nice to hear someone talking about religion from a viewpoint of inclusion and acceptance. The other folks basically want you to OBEY them and their interpretation of the Bible, and to exclude whomever they deem to be sinners.

  6. What does he think they'd have left?

  7. Bishop Robinson didn't come out in 2003, that was the year that he was elected bishop by the Diocese of New Hampshire, and his election was confirmed/consented to by the national church's general convention, making him the first openly gay bishop in the global Anglican Communion.

  8. Look who's talking about "spiritual arrogance" . . . an Episcopal priest who thought he could offer an inaugural blessing on behalf of people from every religious tradition, and who stated beforehand that he didn't want his prayer to sound "too Christian." Who needs a cleric who has no pride in his own faith? Maybe Gene Robinson knows what religion is, but he sure as sh*t doesn't understand Christianity. I'm glad he retired.
