Rick Perry Flashback: Homosexuality is Like Alcoholism

TIME's Mark Benjamin points out some passages from a 2008 Rick Perry book in which he compares homosexuality to alcoholism:

Onmyhonor_perry ...in a little-noticed passage in his first book, “On My Honor,” a encomium on the Boy Scouts published in 2008, Perry also drew a parallel between homosexuality and alcoholism. “Even if an alcoholic is powerless over alcohol once it enters his body, he still makes a choice to drink,” he wrote. “And, even if someone is attracted to a person of the same sex, he or she still makes a choice to engage in sexual activity with someone of the same gender.”

He also said that gays should not have sex:

In “On My Honor,” Perry also punted on the exact origins of homosexuality. He wrote that he is “no expert on the ‘nature versus nurture’ debate,” but that gays should simply choose abstinence.

Think Progress offers the full passage if you're interested in checking it out.

  1. Hey, if homosexuality is like alcoholism, then I don't want to be sober.

Tell you what, when straights all choose to be abstinent for life, I will consider it. Seriously, only an truly solipsistic person could think another person should go through life without experiencing intimacy.

  9. this is essentially the same position taken by the Catholic church. I've even had a priest-professor use the alcoholism example in (theology) class. He also compared being gay to being born without a leg. He was gay.

  13. “And, even if someone is attracted to a person of the same sex, he or she still makes a choice to engage in sexual activity with someone of the same gender.”

So maybe that’s wherefrom he derives his energy - the avoidance of acting on that attraction.

  16. Rick Perry didn't seem too abstinent in 2004 when his wife caught him in flagrante delicto with his former Texas Secretary of State, Geoff Connor (as reported by the Austin Chronicle). Seeing as Perry's running for president of the United States, could he please shut up about forcing Jesus worship on the American people? Could he please do that sometime real soon? Please? Pretty please with rent boys on it? After all, the U.S. Constitution doesn't require the American people to worship Jesus, does it?

  18. Perry says he does not condemn but when he signed the legislation banning same sex marriage, he did it in a church and said that if the homosexuals don't like it, they can move.

I'm still here just to piss him off.

  21. Ah, another hate-filled Xtian preaching what he most certainly does not practice. I fear, however, that he will get a pass on this from the MSM ... as always.

  22. .... It has been said: "It's not necessary to put a bell on a fool?"...Bells are becoming scarce in the GOP rodeo. Perry has always been a hypocrite ...probably dating back to his college days as a "Yell Leader" at Texas A&M..."Yell Leader"??? Sounds kinda gay to me....just sayin'
    Go away Perry, shoo.

  23. Didn't we argue here on TR months ago that he couldn't run because he's closeted? Now he's the frontrunner? Can we whisper in Romney's ear or something?
