Did Philadelphia Flyer Wayne Simmonds Call Sean Avery a 'Faggot'?: VIDEO

Philadelphia Flyer Wayne Simmonds, who was the target of a racial slur at a recent game, was seen (and apparently heard) calling New York Ranger Sean Avery something that looked to many observers like "f**king faggot" during a pre-season game this evening.

Outsports writes: "If this ‘faggot’ comment is true, it will be interesting to see how the NHL responds. The NBA has put the price tag for using the word at $100k $50k."

Commenters on pro hockey boards noticed as well.

  1. Wait a minute. Isn't this the same guy who was complaining just last week that someone threw a banana onto the ice and he considered it racist and was demanding that the NHL take action?

Way to show yourself to be a hypocrite!

Don't cry bigot when you're throwing bigot stones of your own.

  2. Yep. Very clear. Not sure if anything will happen. The new sheriff in town, Shanahan, has been very busy lately suspending players for illegal hits. Andrew Ference did the same thing during the playoff finals in June but no one noticed. (I don't remember the recipient of the comment--some Canucks player.)

  4. Wayne didn't "demand" nhl action. he let it roll off of his shoulders and has not spoken of it since he made his statement. i don't understand how people can be mad over an assumption when worse language is probably heard on the ice.

  7. Someone took "paying it forward" the wrong way. Wouldn't surprise me if slurs like this get dropped every night (not that's good either), but yelling it for all to see on national TV is just a dumb move.

  8. 90% of the comments on that hockey board linked are really depressing. The lengths to which people will go to justify the use of the word is mind-blowing!

  9. @TampaZeke: Likewise, white gays shouldn't cry bigot when throwing bigot stones of their own. You cannot and WILL NOT have it both ways.

  10. Let the fake apology commence!

    Posted by: Keith | Sep 26, 2011 11:52:40 PM

  11. @CHSC: for real.

It's mind-boggling how these commenters can claim that, since "faggot" is not used [by straight people] just to mean "gay" anymore, it's LESS of a problem.

  12. Well, in his defense, Avery was being a faggot.

  16. Actually, TAMPAZEKE, some Black folks (and of course, most of us aren't into Hockey) were angry that Simmoons didn't make more out of the banana incident. He said something like , "I'm above that kind of stuff". Well, obviously, he forgot to stay above it.

We thought that since he's Canadian racial relations don't carry the kind of volatile emotions as they do here in the US.

Of course, he should be fined for loosing his temper and using the sexual orientation slur. The only way to get people to realize it's unacceptable in their professional, work place or school environment is to make sure there is a penalty.

It's an interesting argument that we've had many times on this blog: when a Straight guy calls another Straight guy a f.ggot (in a state of anger) is it the same thing as hate speech against Gay people? Yes, because he are still using what he believes is the most demeaning insult he can use against another man. It would be similar to a White guy calling another White guy a n.gger. I mean, it SHOULD be similar, but it's not.

Men (of any race) still use the word "f.ggot" to insult other men (cue RICK).

But, yes, Simmonds' response to the racial slur last week was very un-emotional...well, publically it was. Maybe this recent incident shows that what Simmonds says in public and what he feels inside may be quite different. Maybe we ALL have had to do that: restrain ourselves, but never resolve our anger--then we explode.

  17. Haha, he never demanded that the NHL do anything, what are you talking about? Don't make uninformed comments if you don't know what you're talking about Tampazeke

  18. Why, I do believe he did.

  19. Faggott is never a positive word no matter who is using it!

  20. The irony is that we see (presumably str8) soldiers dancing with each other in musical videos they put online all the time.
