WIKILEAKS: Ugandan First Lady Behind Kill-the-Gays Bill
Uganda's First Lady has been pushing for a gay pogrom in her country, according to Wikileaks cables revealed by a Ugandan newspaper.
Janet Museveni - think of her as the anti-Judy Garland - is "ultimately behind" the kill-the-gays bill tailored by Ugandan and American evangelicals. Interestingly, her husband, the president, has been trying to sideline the same bill.
The disclosure comes from none other than a senior presidential adviser in Uganda who felt "morally obligated to speak out against the legislation, which he compared to McCarthyism." That's an understatement. McCarthy never tried to execute communists.
Read the cable here.
Another revelation from Wikileaks, this one heartening: the Vatican lobbied against the bill.

I think she's not alone. I remember a lecture a few years back about there being a sort of first ladies christian club among several African leaders' wives, and their main objectives are anti-gay.

McCarthy certainly wanted to execute commies. If you don't know your history, you should at least know your Angels in America!

The horrifying and banal evil of ignorance is personified.

During the days of McCarthyism, being communist can get someone fired from their jobs but not executed. The Rosenbergs were executed for espionage for the Soviet Union. (to be more specific, for passing information about the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union) Of course it was quite controversial at the time. One may even argue the hysteria contributed to the conviction. It was an exception rather than the rule.

Black women have a long history of hating gay men. A review of the ballots cast FOR Prop 8 noted a high 86% of votes coming from the black community, dominated by black female voters. The gay community should remember that when black women seek their own special treatment and funding. They don't hesitate to deny the same to the gay community. OTOH, only 53% of the Hispanic community voted for Prop 8.

In the 50's, not only commies but also gays were purged from the Federal Government. The name Frank Kameny comes to mind. He was dismissed for being gay. The Obama administration has actually apologized to him for wrongful dismissal. It was just a sad chapter in our history.
