Denver Girl Scouts Says 'No' to Transgender 7-Year-Old: VIDEO

Montoya

Bobby Montoya is a 7-year-old who identifies as a girl. Her family accepts Bobby's gender identity but the local Girl Scout troop turned down the family's request that Bobby be able to join, despite the inclusive policy of the Girl Scouts of Colorado, 9 News reports:

"It's hurting my heart," Bobby said. "It hurts me and my mom both."

Recently, Archuleta wanted to sign Bobby up for Girl Scouts. His older sister did it, and Bobby really wanted to join. Archuleta told 9NEWS when she brought Bobby to register, a troop leader told her Bobby couldn't join.

"I said, 'Well, what's the big deal?' She said 'It doesn't matter how he looks, he has boy parts, he can't be in Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts don't allow that [and] I don't want to be in trouble by parents or my supervisor,'" Archuleta told 9NEWS.

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

The Girl Scouts of Colorado released a statement:

"Girl Scouts is an inclusive organization and we accept all girls in Kindergarten through 12th grade as members. If a child identifies as a girl and the child's family presents her as a girl, Girl Scouts of Colorado welcomes her as a Girl Scout. Our requests for support of transgender kids have grown, and Girl Scouts of Colorado is working to best support these children, their families and the volunteers who serve them. In this case, an associate delivering our program was not aware of our approach. She contacted her supervisor, who immediately began working with the family to get the child involved and supported in Girl Scouts. We are accelerating our support systems and training so that we're better able to serve all girls, families and volunteers."

  2. How odd for an organization that is full of lesbians.

  3. And this is just one reason why the GSA is so damn awesome.

Sad that even on such a nice story as this, though, somebody here can still find something incredibly stupid to say.

  4. Sounds like they were doing the right thing all along, just one dumb cog slowed it up.

  5. Makes me feel better about buying their cookies. Now when boy scouts ask me to buy their popcorn I can explain why I support the GSA but do not support the BSA.

  6. I'm impressed with the Girl Scouts response. It feels like the lone sensible approach in a sea of craziness.

  7. Great reminder that the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are very different organizations.

  8. I believe you're headline is misleading.

Obviously, per the statement they released, they are going to make sure this works out.

One person who does not know what is going on doesn't represent the organization as a whole.

  9. So maybe the headline here should be changed, so people don't make reactionary conclusions before reading the article.

  10. The Boy Scouts are controlled by Mormons and fundamentalist Christians. The Girl Scouts are not, and as a result they do not promote discrimination.

  11. Wow, I'm shocked that the GSA is such an inclusive organization. Rock on, little sisters.

  12. Hell yeah, Girl Scouts of America! So simple, and yet so hard for others to follow in their footsteps.

I'm buying a few boxes of cookies the next time I see a stand.

  13. Yes. Please update your headline to at least start off as "Denver Girl Scouts associate". Towleroad does get indexed in Google.

  14. Good for the Girl Scouts. Now they need to make sure all their volunteers are educated in the policy.

  15. I agree that your headline is totally misleading.

The headline should say that Colorado Girl Scouts accept transgender child and reaffirm their membership policies.

You should also have a subheadline noting that they corrected the local leader who initially denied membership to the child.

  16. Change the stupid headline - it's misleading/inaccurate - WRONG.

  17. I don't understand. Just say Bobby is a girl (because she "identifies as a girl") and leave it at that. I don't think the Girl Scouts inspect reproductive organs.

Also, the headline is recklessly misleading. It seems the Girl Scouts' policy is to accept someone like Bobby regardless.

As for the cookies, they are not nearly as healthy as they are tasty.

  18. To note: Girl Scouts aren't taking the high road here, folks.

They're taking the road that won't have them sued.

Many years ago, the Boy Scouts were forced by the courts to allow a girl to join their ranks because, contrary the BSA's argument, there was no equivalent program for her gender. (The GSA's core emphasis and programme is vastly different.)

    The same works in reverse.

GSA execs made a smart move, not necessarily a compassionate one.

  19. awesome response and so correct..wish the boyscouts could be that progressive and not so hung up on role models.

    Posted by: al | Oct 26, 2011 11:28:39 PM

  20. @TOMMYOC

    Oh stop!

This is not true. The Girl Scouts have always taken heat by the Mormons (who won't allow their kids to join) and other groups for being "liberal".

BTW...if anyone is in the Richmond VA area and is up for cookies this spring...you know which mom to come to.

    :)

  21. I love how the chick says Bobby can't join because she has boy parts. If her parents present Bobby as a girl and Bobby looks like a girl, who's gonna know? Did the girl scouts add an extra badge called Getting To Know Your Vagina?
