Gay Detroit Man Murdered for Stepping on a Pair of Sunglasses: VIDEO

The mother of slain 26-year-old gay Detroit man Charlie Hernandez is outraged that the killer of her son has been charged with manslaughter following a brutal murder late last year which appears to have been triggered after Hernandez stepped on a pair of sunglasses, WXYZ reports.

It happened back on December 17th at an apartment building on Vinewood in southwest Detroit. Family members say Charlie, who was openly gay and slightly challenged, stepped on some sunglasses by accident.

Two men reportedly got angry, used gay slurs and started hitting Charlie. He hit back and the fight escalated and someone pulled a knife and in the end Charlie lay dead.

His mom Anna says she found him covered in blood, nearly naked.

Two men were arrested, one was released and the other, Titus Willis, is charged with manslaughter.

  1. Seriously? Only manslaughter? And they used gay slurs while attacking him, but it's not a hate crime upgrade?

  2. I hope the people who did this to Charlie rot in hell. This is outrageous and sickening.

  3. Hailing from Detroit all I gotsta say is: not surprised.

You can get killed for looking at someone the wrong way much less stepping on their sunglasses.

@Bobby, they use racial, misogynist, and homophobic slurs all the time in Detroit and its just...its not how you think it is there. Its not really something people give much thought to. In the hood its just how people talk CONSTANTLY. Pretty much everyone is politically incorrect on a daily basis. If they aren't, then you must be MUCH bigger than they are.

And, manslaughter charges are usually those leveled when there was no original intent to kill the person.

The city of Detroit sees crimes like this every day. This kid happens to be gay, its not because he is gay that it happened. I could share some of the ugly things that happened to me just for no reason at all but it would get censored.

If a giant sinkhole swallowed the city there would be much rejoicing.

  4. First of all, let me say, what a sad way to die. My thoughts go out to Charlie's loved ones. Another young person senselessly taken away from the world.

Now, with that said, I have to say, to kill someone over SUNGLASSES is about as barbaric as it gets, and the fact the charge is manslaughter and not murder more or less amount to a slap on the hand. Sadly, I have to agree with Rin, stories like this come out of Detroit daily. And when a clear-cut cold blooded murderer is given a manslaughter charge, that just feeds into the violent culture of the city. It lets these criminals know they can do what they please and pretty much get away with it without the deserved amount of punishment.

    Very sad all around.

  5. If Charlie had been a straight, blond haired, blue eyed, white girl the killer would have already been convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to death.

  6. How is this not a murder charge?

  7. Has the world gone insane? How can you kill anyone because they stepped on a pair of sunglasses?!

  8. @Tampazeke,

in Detroit??? Uhhh, no. I'm a blue-eyed white girl, maybe not blonde, but...def a straight white girl who had a felony assault and sexual assault happen to me that got lost in the sheer mass of crime that went on.

In Detroit it honestly is not: black, white, gay, straight that draw the lines...

    It's rich/poor. Above and below 8 Mile. 586 or 313.

There have always been gay kids in the hood. They are always "Gay Bobbie" or "Gay Timmy". Gay Timmy wore bootie shorts, clogs, rocked a Toni Braxton haircut, and had his nails did and no one, not one person messed with him inside the neighborhood.

Its a very strange code is all I can say. I was fine on my block and street and even a few over but not too many over. If you were a gay kid that got messed with by people 5 blocks over then the people on your block would go mess with them.

Any excuse for violence, theft, etc

Actually, I'll bet he was killed over STOLEN sunglasses at that. Detroit is just a violent city.
