Lesbian Guests to Sit with Michelle Obama at 'State of the Union' Address

Air Force Col. Ginger Wallace, an Air Force intelligence officer who has led airlift and intelligence operations during Operations SOUTHERN WATCH, PROVIDE RELIEF, UPHOLD DEMOCRACY, ALLIED FORCE, ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM, will be the First Lady's guest at the State of the Union address tonight.

WallaceThe White House writes:

She currently lives in McLean, Virginia with her partner of over a decade, Kathy Knopf.  In December, Ms. Knopf attended Col. Wallace’s promotion ceremony and participated in the “pinning on” of Col. Wallace’s rank, marking the first such event reported following the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell.”  Col. Wallace is currently training to deploy to Afghanistan in the Spring 2012 through the Afghanistan-Pakistan Hands program.

Lisa Keen spoke with Wallace: “I could not be more honored or proud,” said Wallace, Tuesday morning. “I’m representing thousands and thousands who have served or are serving…. But it’s truly not about us. It’s about all the gays and lesbians who have served, and those who served and we’re not as fortunate as I to have full careers, and those who will serve in the future. And it is about our families and partners.”

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network praised the White House's decision to include Wallace:

"This is a clear victory in the fight to achieve full equality for service members.  In his 2010 State of the Union, President Obama committed to repealing 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' and indeed, it would not have been possible without his determination to do so.  Even as we celebrate this milestone tonight, let us not forget that our work is far from done.  While gay and lesbian service members may now serve openly if they choose, they are still not serving equally.  They are without the same protections from harassment and discrimination that are afforded others, and legally married gay and lesbian service members do not receive the same recognition, support, and benefits for their families as their straight married counterparts.  We must keep fighting until the mission is complete."

And Lorelei Kilker, an analytical chemist for an environmental laboratory, will also be the First Lady's guest.

The White House writes:

In October of 2011, Ms. Kilker was one of a class of women who benefitted from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) investigation of alleged systematic sex discrimination at her former employer that resulted in the award of back wages and significant remedial relief, arrangements that were achieved through a cooperative process between the employer and EEOC.  Since the creation of the President’s Equal Pay Task Force in January 2010, EEOC obtained almost $50 million in monetary relief through administrative enforcement for victims of sex-based wage discrimination, obtained changes to workplace practices that benefit over one quarter of a million workers, and filed five cases including sex-based wage discrimination claims.

Kilker lives in Brighton, Colorado with her domestic partner and their two children.

Chris Geidner has more on Kilker and how her presence at the State of the Union highlights LGBT inequality:

KilkerKilker and her partner, Sara Nelson, are traveling to D.C. from Colorado today, and Kilker's case, though being touted as a sign of the administration's success, is a stark sign of current limitations of the law for LGBT employees in the workplace – limitations that advocates believe President Obama could take a significant swipe at with the stroke of a pen.

Geidner talks to Freedom to Work President Tico Almeida:

For the person who served as the lead counsel in the House of Representatives working on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act from 2007 to 2010, however, Almeida also sees the difficulties an employee like Kilker faces under the law in many states today.

If she had been discriminated against because she is a lesbian instead of because of her sex, Almeida notes, ''She would have been turned away by the EEOC because they would not have had the legal authority to take her case.''

  1. Wondering about how much beyond pure pandering this might be to a community that makes fools of themselves over the tiniest crumb by an Administration expert at it made me think of one of the earlier episodes of "Will & Grace" in which the two were fighting over the same hot new tenant in their building, Grace insisting he couldn't be interested in Will because she was certain he was straight, and Will insisting he was gay. They agree to let Jack decide because he has, “the best gaydar in the tri-state area."

WILL: In his bathroom, he had three magazines–and one of them was Martha Stewart’s Living.

GRACE: He also had Basketball Digest.

JACK: Ah, you both make compelling points, but I believe the truth is to be found .....in the third magazine.

WILL and GRACE (together): Vanity Fair.

    JACK: Unless it’s Vanity Fair.

In this case, the degree of significance pivots to the third person [or fourth], i.e., whether the partner of either named lesbian invitee is allowed to sit with Michelle, too. From Ms. Kilker's comments, it appears her partner will not be, but, rather, back at the White House somewhere. And, then, the "unless it's Vanity Fair" factor is that lesbians are less threatening to 'Mercans. Where are the gay male couple invitees? Of course, there were many shouts of joy at this time last year when Gabby Giffords' gay aide and savior, Daniel Hernandez, was invited [by himself] to the 2011 State of the Union....how he was going to sit with Michelle, and get a shout out from the President. Well, he did end up in the same seating area as the First Lady but so far from her he only appeared in long shots, and there was no mention of him, let alone that he is gay, in the President's remarks.

Of course, the LGBT Bots will swoon and wet themselves in any case, and I'm happy for the lesbian invitees. But learning long ago than Man [& Woman] cannot live on crumbs alone, the only thing that will have any real meaning for me is what he says—or does not say—in his speech about LGBT rights. As he's repeatedly proven, words are no guarantee of action—but their absence is usually telling. And, then, there's how that W&G episode ended—with neither of them winning because the guy wasn't interested in either of them. Which reminds me of how we never got that rumored gay Cabinet member, that rumored gay Secretary of the Navy, nor the rumored gay wedding in the Rose Garden performed by the President. Then there was the repeal of DADT without equality IN the military, an ENDA bill stuck in the ditch after the President abandoned his promises to fight for it, and, finally, will “God [be taken out of] the mix” of marriage equality tonight?

YES, he must be reelected—but how much he might do for LGBT equality in a second term will be very much affected by the same major influencer in his first: the willingness of LGBTs to settle for crumbs or half measures.

  2. Ditto, ditto, ditto to Michael Bedwell.

I would say that you took the words right out of my mouth, but you actually stated it much better than I had planned to.

I'm glad your comment is first so that it will get a lot of reads.

I especially agree with the statement that lesbians are less threatening to "'Mercans."

  3. Apparently some here are unaware of the power of image(s). As the rest of us are aware, as more and more straight people become aware of our authentic stories—through the MANY ways that happens—they become more supportive of our rights.

  4. Michael:

Well written. Thank you for elucidating my thoughts as well.

  5. As a gay man who should i vote for in the 2012 election? Obama who sees LGBT folks as an integral part of the American family or the republicans who throw LGBT folks under the bus so that they can gain the evangelical vote? What a difficult decision. LOL!!!
