Groundhog Sees Shadow; 6 More Weeks of Winter

Happy groundhog day!

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning, meaning six more weeks of winter, which hasn't been that bad for those of us in NYC:

At 7:25 a.m. this morning, amidst mostly cloudy skies, and temperatures in the low 30s, Groundhog Phil saw his shadow in the little town of Punxsutawney, Pa. ... If Phil’s forecast is right, it would signal a dramatic reversal from the mild weather pattern affecting much of the country. Many parts of the central and eastern U.S. have seen temperatures 20 to 30 degrees above normal in recent days. On February 1, just 19% of the Lower 48 had snow cover compared to 52% at this time last year.

  1. This winter has been so odd. It usually rains for months in the winters of San Francisco. This year, a couple days. Good for my dog (who hates water) and me, but still very unexpected.

  3. @ Paul, I had to reread your last sentence a couple times LOL.

I first read, "Good for my dog (who hates water and me)..."

  4. Always a hoot to see these Punxsatawney guys exchange for a few hours their Carhartts for the duds they climb into for their kids' weddings and, wearing special gloves, hoist a heavily-tranquilized marmot up before the populace. Groundhogs will definitely bite you if you offend them.

  8. @Nat: that made me laugh. I'm pretty sure my dog likes me. She has no choice!

As for the groundhog tradition, it's just bizarre.

  9. "for those of us in NYC."

There ya go again! 80% of the U.S. is free of snow and ice as of today. THE WARM WINTER IS NOT UNIQUE TO NYC.

  10. Gen. Beauregard Lee did NOT see his shadow, so spring is just around the corner for the South. Not like we've had a winter down here this year anyway.
