Homophobic Troy, MI Mayor Janice Daniels Faces Recall Threat

Troy, Michigan mayor Janice Daniels, who faced outrage late last year over a Facebook update that read "I think I am going to throw away my I Love New York carrying bag now that queers can get married there", may soon face a recall, the Detroit Free Press reports:

DanielsAn entity called Recall Janice Daniels filed two petitions Monday with the Oakland County Clerk's Office. Daniels was called a "dangerous, polarizing ideologue" on its website, www.recalljanice.com. Matthew Binkowski of Troy sponsored the petitions.

"We believe that the citizens of Troy must take our city back," according to the website.

One petition challenges her vote against millions of dollars in federal funding to build a transit center near the Troy/Birmingham border. The other challenges her views on homosexuality, her behavior during her swearing-in, and a possible breach of City Council meeting rules.

Daniels faced more anti-gay allegations in January after she met with students at the Troy High School Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) seeking to mend ties with the mayor by holding a forum, and told them that she wanted to invite psychologists who would testify that homosexuality is a mental disease.

According to the paper, "If approved, the petition's supporters have 180 days to submit 7,985 signatures, which need to be gathered within any 90-day period within the 180 days."

  1. They should recall her. I can tell you for a fact that she cost Troy retailers a thousand bucks out of my wallet this past Christmas season. I skipped shopping at the (high end) Sommerset Collection and went elsewhere. A mayor's job should be promoting their city, not driving people and their dollars away.

  2. I really hope she's recalled. Not only is her behavior despicable... it's clear that she is completely unqualified for the job. I live in LA now... but am a native Michigander and was actually living in Troy shooting a movie when all this went down. I joined friends going to the council meetings and hearing her speak sent shivers down my spine. It was embarrassing to see such ignorant, hateful and just stupid speech come out of my home state and hit the national blogsphere.

  3. I hope she is recalled soon, because it is getting really tough not shopping or eating in Troy lol (though there are many other options in the region)...

one more thing, this week, as per Facebook, she was involved in another brouhaha, where she wrote in an official communique that someone in the staff (I do not recall whom) was not physically fit to perform his duties - I imagine the person is either fat or old - which prompted a county official to, for the first time, write a public letter against a mayor... if you guys need this info for reporting, let me know and I'll get the link...

she is awful, she needs to go, Troy is a good place tainted by her antics... let's hope that more people show up for a recall, because it seems she was elected because voting attendance was extremely low (and the tea party took advantage of it)...

and when she is gone (or before for that matter), come visit Michigan =-)

  4. People offended by her remarks have every right to petition for a recall vote. It's democracy in action. If she's recalled by the voters, at least you won't have Maggie and Brian claiming that "activist judges" removed her.

  7. I lived in Troy for years, but have moved to Florida: out of the frying pan and into the fire?

Good luck with the recall. She seems to be what every city needs least. I have friends out gathering petition signatures! When they knock, sign!
