Author of St. Petersburg's Anti-Gay Law Will Attend Madonna Concert, Prosecute If Necessary

The man behind St. Petersburg, Russia's gay "propaganda" bill is threatening Madonna over her plans to speak out against the law when she comes to the city for a concert, ABC News reports.

MilonovThe bill’s author, city assemblyman Vitaly Milanov, says he wants Madonna charged under the new law if she speaks out against it during her concert. He said he was willing to attend the show “to control its moral content.”

“I’m ready to personally suffer a couple of hours of her concert,” he told the Russian Interfax news agency.

LGBT rights activists in Russia are divided on Madonna's proposal:

A group of Russian gay rights advocates plans to picket the concert, saying Madonna is cashing in on their struggle and urging her to cancel the show. “The law will stay in force, Madonna will leave and the Russian LGBT-community will be humiliated even more,” Nikolai Aleksev, the head of the LGBT advocacy group Gay Russia, wrote on his blog.

Other Russian gay rights groups disagreed with that tactic and welcomed the attention the superstar had given to their cause.“We consider that Madonna’s visit and her address to millions of her Russian fans with words in support of freedom of expression for everyone will bring more good than a boycott would,” said Igor Kochetkov, chairman of the Russian LGBT Network.

BINGO! Would Madonna be so smug as to ignore the words of a true "freedom fighter" for gay rights, Nikolai Aleksev? You betcha! She's disgusting.

  3. ...and if she proves the naysayers wrong?

i, personally, think it would be a massively impactful thing for Madonna to perform and address this bigotry.

    hope will never be silent.

  4. Personally I hope Madonna speaks out about this in a BIG way during her concert AND gets arrested. That would really shine a light on this silliness and the stupidity of these Russians.

  5. she's "publicity whore", right folks? getting arrested would be the height of international scandal. she might like that :D

  8. I have not read the other posts here yet...just want to say, without influence, that this is a MOST interesting crisis. Values right up alongside each other, each dynamite strong. Any case could be argued but the only one that Madonna could espouse is the one vavoring individual freedom of expression. It's completely repugnant to the patriarchy, especially in its homosexual form. Its homophobic big time.

It's a very striking example of clashing cultures. along with the fact that differing gay groups have taken polar opposite positions.

    Stay tuned.

  9. So what if she's using this to promote her concert? Does the benefit of having someone as popular as Madonna shining a light on your cause somehow decrease because she might not be doing it for the right reason? USE YOUR BRAINS! There are many many times in life when you have to play smart, be practical instead of being an idealogue. If the LGBT activists of Russia think like totalitarians instead of advocates, no wonder this law got passed in the first place. The good that will come from the publicity outweighs any misgivings about her sincerity.

If you think she is using you, then use her too! If you were right all along and she wasn't sincere, at least you got the publicity for your cause without having to do absolutely anything for it. And if she was sincere? Then you've got a solid ally that you almost lost because you were too busy being a damn primadona.

  10. Maybe a concert venue full of Madonna fans will tear Milanov limb from limb.

  11. And my gaydar goes clangclangclangclang.... Always the same. How tragic. This makes her a "media whore" because she's never been a LGBT ally? Never pushed boundaries or spoken out in her concerts? If she didn't speak, you same people would be calling her a "selfish whore" for taking money from Russia's gays while they can't live openly. Thank god the Internet came along so all of you who constantly feel the need to degrade, belittle, condemn and ridicule others but are too afraid to do it face to face now have a platform...

  12. I say Go Madonna! This is exactly the attention that this draconian law merits. If she just cancels it all goes by the wayside but actually getting arrested would shine a harsh light on these small minded people.

  14. What would she actually be arrested for ?. Surely it's not an offence simply to speak out against the law.

  15. With this development, whichever route Madonna chooses is a win. Go play and thumb her nose at them OR pull the concert. Either way, it's gained needed attention.

  17. actually den, russia is NOT the US and speaking out is most definitely against the new law, and some of the preexisting as well. its a good idea to actually pay attention to these things since they have been discussed quite widely in the media.

i wish those involved would listen to nikolai, since he is the one putting his ass on the line time after time. if there is any hero of the gay rights movement in russia it is he, and he has paid dearly in ruples and beatings in jail.

  18. I don't think Vitaly Milanov (aka Mr Two Tons of Fun) knows what he's getting into taking on Madonna. This should be fun!

  20. How many times has she toured Russia? Now she's deciding to say something. We should be grateful, at least this time she's not praising officials after they've ordered violent retaliation to peaceful LGBT marches/demonstrations. Call me cynical...

  21. Vitaly Milanov, never provoke a rabid animal. Remember when Madonna told the officials in Canada to go ahead and cancel her concert and stat a riot. The then performed ferociously on herself on stage. Don't mess with the Madonna!

  22. A -- Madonna remains, after nearly 30 years, a fast friend of Gays, but does it HER way, as she ought to

B-- Sorry, but the Russian guy looks like Tyler Clementi's Gay older brother, James, if you add 15 years and 40 pounds

  23. Vitaly Milanov looks as gay as a picnic basket. Even if he is straight, he looks like one of those hypocrites who decries gay men but masturbates over lesbians.
