'Emo' Kids Stoned To Death In Iraq

Emo-boys-2In February, Iraq's Interior Ministry denounced the music and fashions known collectively as "emo" as Satanic. Shortly thereafter, leaflets began appearing in Shi'ite neighborhoods around Baghdad -- Sadr City, Baya -- bearing the names of local "emo" kids, urging them to give up their depravity and get right with God. A sample text:

We strongly warn you, to all the obscene males and females, if you will not leave this filthy work within four days the punishment of God will descend upon you at the hand of the Mujahideen.

The Mujahideen weren't joking. Those four allotted days expired at the end of the month. Since then, according to the AP:

At least 14 bodies of youths have been brought to three hospitals in eastern Baghdad bearing signs of having been beaten to death with rocks or bricks, security and hospital sources told Reuters under condition they not be identified because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Nine bodies were brought to hospitals in Sadr City, a vast, poor Shi'ite neighborhood, three were brought to East Baghdad's main al-Kindi hospital and two were brought to the central morgue, medical sources said.

Six other young people, including two girls, were wounded in beatings intended as warnings, the security sources said.

Leading Shi'ia clerics, even very crazy ones, have spoken out against the stonings, as has the Interior Ministry. From the AP:

... on his website on Saturday, Moqtada al-Sadr, a Shi'ite cleric whose followers dominate Sadr City, described "emo" youths as "crazy and fools", but said they should be dealt with only through the law.

"They are a plague on Muslim society, and those responsible should eliminate them through legal means," he said.

  2. That's what Rick Santorum has planned for the U.S.

  4. What a fu**ed up country. It is frustrating to see muslims regressing instead of progressing. Fu**ed up world at the moment when you add in the crazy christians.

  5. Cheney and Rumsfeld's plan to "Spread Democracy" across the Mideast starting with Iraq is really working out well. God I hate those guys more and more every day.

Sending out love to all those kids. What a nightmare.

  6. They are kind of a plague,actually.

Seriously, that's just sad. These people need to loosen up. They take themselves far too seriously.

  7. PHOENIX JUSTICE is right -- this is exactly the sort of thing that Rick Santorum wants for America -- as does Michelle Bachmann, Sarah Palin and the rest of the Tea Party crazies. Every time one of them talks about bringing more religion into the running of the government, THIS is what they are talking about. The only difference is that they don't want to stone Emo kids -- they want to stone us.

  8. Could our Alien Overlords please just go ahead and attack? I'm starting to get the impression that being ruled by the Multi-Headed-Giant-Gorilla-Monster-from-Epsilon-Five would be significantly less evil than what human religion is currently doing to our planet.

  9. "Six other young people, including two girls, were wounded in beatings intended as warnings, the security sources said."

Why is it always necessary to point out female victims? This report reports on "14 BODIES here, 3 BODIES there and then six other young people, INCLUDING TWO GIRLS..."

Why is "including two girls" necessary? Is that supposed to make it worse, or are we to be on the fence about whether this is a bad thing or not until we find out that some of the victims weren't male?

It's kind of like that old "innocent women and children" thing.

  10. I'm getting tired of reading the comments about "these countries" being "stuck in the 12th century", etc. Clearly these INSANE, fundamentalist views are not representative of everyone in these countries - if they were, there wouldn't be emo kids to stone in the first place.

  11. Wait. The cleric said the victims should have been eliminated through legal means. How about the killers? Are there going to be any investigations?
Apparently the killers are heroes who have done some good service to their country.

  12. Islam is a sick religion. Needs to modernise itself and come into the 21st century. So backward.

    Posted by: radical53 | Mar 10, 2012 10:05:26 PM

  13. Radical, face the music. The world would be an infinitely better place if there was no religion at all. It serves no purpose other than to be used as an excuse for this kind of barbaric activity.

  15. @ Radical53: All religions are sick, not just Islam.

  16. Wait, I thought hordes of zealots stoning innocent young people WAS legal means for Muslims...?

    Posted by: johnny | Mar 10, 2012 11:01:27 PM

  17. @Johnny

there is a precise ritual to stonings under Islamic law. The family gets the first stone.

maybe it is surprising that girls in an Islamic culture were able to have their hair out of a scarf much less an emo haircut?

Go live there for 6 months and you'll come back and think Pat Robertson isn't so bad. I had to go give classes in Egypt, a fairly touristy place, on female genital cutting. I can say that as an uncovered female I was pretty frickin scared anywhere not in a museum district. Can't imagine being gay in those would be like, oh, an unwed female having sex or something.

  18. Religion will be what people make it. They're all the same when you mix in a few fruit cakes. And what is scary is this is what Santorum and Gingrich wants to do with America. They've gone after the gays and they've gone after the women, and in a way they've gone after other religions. So what's the difference?

    Posted by: Macmantoo | Mar 10, 2012 11:48:47 PM

  19. Religion needs to go away. All of them are F'd up....Anyone that believes any of that crap (religion) is sick in the head. Really.

  20. The Mujahideen and its whore, "Religion", are the murderers of innocent children.

  21. The world, including the quick to condemn Israel for defending themselves against rockets being firing into their country... however, they look the other way when things like this happen. To think of the billions of dollars wasted, let a lone all the American troops killed or maimed because some politicians like President Bush 43, and his advisers believed we should go into the nation building business. I have no answers, but nothing is going to change as long as those backward countries are run by religious fanatics. We should not give any aid direct to those countries, and pull out of the U.N. because they aid and abet tyrants, and look away from just causes.

  22. Agree with most of the posts. Religion -- muslim, christian, especially -- is the exact opposite of what it should be. Religion, if one believes in it, should do good. It should not do evil. My hope is for a reverse rapture... when all the "enlightened" and "born again" and "faithful" are called away... but to their surprise, they land in hell, not heaven. With the pope and frothy mix at the front of the pack. And, yes, Santorum and his ilk want to US to move backwards.

  23. "...eliminate through legal means..."
Nice theocratic country. Peaceful, loving religion and all that.

    Posted by: Gene | Mar 11, 2012 10:12:42 AM

  24. Figures this would bring the religion haters out of the woodwork.
News Flash: This is about fundamentalism, not religion. It's about Bush invading a country over oil and leaving it to fundamentalist gangsters.
This is all too obvious for words. That you can't see it shows that you could care less about the victims, but are just using this as an excuse to act out your emotional issues.
