Police Identify Two Suspects in Murder of Chelsea Man

Police have identified two suspects in the murder last week of a NYC Chelsea man, although there are differing reports on his relationship to them.

The NY Daily News reports:

Investigators believe John Laubach, 57, who had recently had a stroke, hired ex-con Edwin Faulkner, 30, and Juan Carlos Martinez-Herrera, 26, to be his caretakers, a police source said. Both remain at large.

NY1 reports "Sources say Laubach paid the two men to have sex with him."

The NY Post:

Laubach had been known to bring young men to his pad, and there were no indications of forced entry into his home, which was ransacked. Faulkner and Martinez-Herrera fled with the victim’s laptop and credit cards, sources said.

“He hired them for a little bit of money to take care of him. Somewhere along the line, they decided to kill him and rob him,” said a law-enforcement source. This past weekend, detectives received information that one of the suspects was holed up in a building on University Avenue in The Bronx, sources said.

The NY Times:

The authorities are now seeking the public’s help in finding Edwin Faulkner, 30, who is 5 feet 9 inches and 140 pounds; and Juan Carlos Martinez-Herrera, 26, who is 5 feet 8 inches and also 140 pounds.

“They both have criminal histories,” said a police spokesman, who added that Mr. Faulkner had had several run-ins with the law in the New York area and that Mr. Martinez-Herrera had a criminal record in Florida.

Laubach, a well-liked neighborhood figure, who used to walk around his block with a cockatoo named Bolo on his shoulder, was found bound and gagged with duct tape in his apartment. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-8477 or go to

  3. I want to give Frances McDormand's speech from Fargo. "All for a laptop and credit cards, both of no use to either of you."

  4. "caretaker," yeah right. Those two look like they don't have a single caring bone in their body. Sadly the victim decided to have fun with the wrong two individuals.

  5. So, who claims that the poor man hired these two jerks as "caretakers"? That's somewhat ridiculous, I think. Well, sometimes the price for sex is just a bit too high. May that poor man rest in peace. May the two murderers get caught, convicted and get the death penalty.

  6. @Jamal49: I don't know whether it's TRUE, but it certainly isn't "ridiculous" that a man who'd had a stroke could have hired them as caretakers. He could, for example, have put an ad on craigslist asking for someone to take him on daily errands who can drive a car and is strong enough to help lift him into a wheelchair. It's not hard to imagine they could have responded to an ad and appeared suited enough to the part to be hired.

  7. Mr. Laubach liked them rough. He paid the price.

I'm NOT saying he should have been killed or even assaulted. I am saying he should have used more common sense.

  8. BTW:

At 5-9, 140lbs, these two dudes are SKINNY for their age. I'm 2-3 inches taller, and 35lbs heavier, and I'm anything but fat. I'd suggest they're druggies.

  10. First step, don't associate with ex-cons. You don't look trouble in the face and say, "sure, come on in!" I'm NOT blaming the victim but bad/stupid choices lead to these types of consequences when people make decisions that are void of any and all commonsense.

  11. I doubt he did a background check on them. More than likely he checked them out and that was enough. People make up their own stories and about people based on what they see and believe what they want if they want it bad enough. Many seniors are more gullible than when they were younger and may not always make the best choices. I feel sad for this poor man. We need to start programs for our aging elderly so that eldery gay men who may not have a family to support them. Imagine if the gay men who spend hours on Towleroad bitching about homophobes and/or trying to outc-nt each other instead invested their time and energy in something like that???

  12. @Mark,

Agreed. But I'm afraid the gay 'community' is just as superficial, obsessed with youth+$, and desirering for 'ugly' and old people to just disappear, as the straight world. But gays especially need community help as they get old. Most, of course, don't have their own families with children and grandchildren.
