Report: 40 People Kidnapped, Tortured, Murdered in Surge of Anti-Gay Violence in Iraq

Via press release from the IGLHRC:

IraqThe International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission has today received reports from Iraq of a wave of targeted killings of individuals who are perceived to be gay or lesbian. According to Iraqi human rights activists, in early February 2012, an unidentified group posted death threats against "the adulterous individuals" in the pre-dominantly Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad and Basra. The threats gave the individuals, whose names and ages were listed, four days to stop their behavior or else face the wrath of God, and were to be carried out by the Mujahedin. According to sources inside Iraq, as the result of this new surge of anti-gay violence close to 40 people have been kidnapped, brutally tortured and murdered. The Iraqi authorities have neither responded to this targeted violence nor have they publically denounced it. It is widely believed that these atrocities are being committed by a group of the Shiite militia.

Said Cary Alan Johnson, Executive Director, International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, in a statement:

Today the Government of Iraq represents a fully sovereign and democratic country. As such, it must protect all of its citizens including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from hate-filled violence and death at the hands of armed militias. Vigilantes who perpetuate the targeted killing of those perceived to be gay or lesbian must not be tolerated in a new Iraq. We have seen these atrocities before. In 2009 vigilantes murdered hundreds of Iraqi individuals for their perceived sexual orientation. There are no excuses for such heinous human rights violations. We demand that the Iraqi Government put a stop to the wanton persecution and killing of gay people, and that the perpetrators punished.

Obviously, we'll be on the lookout for any further developments or confirmation...

  1. Thank you, George W. You are the gift that keeps on giving. It is well known that the "peace" that was won by the so-called "surge" in Iraq was due to granting control over vast territories to the militiamen and their cohorts. We will be living with the results of this blunder for years to come.

  2. Why can't I find this on the IGLHRC site?

  3. Rance, this is not Bush's fault. Arabs do this to gays all the time. Perhaps you should better educate yourself on the matter?

  4. @ Max,

It's well known that the current campaign against gay men didn't exist under Saddam Hussein and only started when the Shiite militias took over. This is well documented. *You* educate yourself, Max. And please stop being an apologist for Bush/Romney (Romney, who thinks that being gay is "perverse" and "reprehensible"). Your agenda is only too transparent.

  5. Max, you actually should educate yourself and stop generalizing all Arabs as being against gay people.

Some of you are blinded by your own bigotry because your heads are so far up your as$es.

  7. Perfect example of how a religion allows people to justify kidnapping, torture and murder.

    Sickening.

  8. Is anyone surprised that gay people are being abused in a Muslim country? We in the West have spent centuries defanging Christianity. With the exception of the evangelicals and fundamentalists in the USA, Christians now behave in a civlized manner. It will take Muslims centuries to catch up.

  9. The blame game here is senseless. What is important is that this is an ongoing campaign that is worse than what the Nazis did to the Jews. These people are not being gassed. They are being tortured. This is a gay holocaust occurring in the Middle East, and our object now should not be placing blame, but stopping the horror.

  10. @Mel Smith,

    1) Not all "Arabs" are Muslims, nor all Muslims "Arabs". Even in the Middle East, not all people would categorize themselves as "Arab".

    2) There are over 1 Billion Muslims in the world. Using Muslims who purposefully choose to live under secular laws and secular governments to categorize the vast majority of Muslims is rather useless in creating long term policy. Look at the governments where Islam is not only the majority religion, but the country can be categorized as a theocracy. How do they act towards women, minority religions, and LGBT people?

    3) Look at the regimes that were overthrown, and then what governments did the people wish installed.

    These are the best indicators.

Now, before this becomes a religious/anti-religion thing...explain how well the anti-religious/atheist Communist nations (USSR, China, North Korea) treated gays and lesbians, comparatively. In those countries gays and lesbians were sent to reeducation camps or even prison.

The fact is, the United States policy of secular government but religious tolerance is the best damn system in the world. There are a lot of things I don't like--Big Brother spying, etc, but in general as long as we hold firm against encroachment of civil liberties we're heads above the rest.

Did we muck up Iraq? Hell to the yeah. Cheney's desire to take over the oil fields of Iraq tore down a secular government and allowed factions to run amok. Still, those factions are now utilizing the same "democratic" institutions we established there to create a craptacular government.

This should teach us to mind our own business, but it won't...

  11. Aside from a few islands of relative tolerance like North America, parts of South America, western Europe, Australia/NZ, gays are outcasts and treated very badly in most of the world. In the middle east, only Israel tolerates gays, relatively speaking. Most of Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, are hell holes for gays.

  12. Defanging Christianity? Come to Oklahoma where the "Christians" still eat raw, red meat three times a day.

  13. Artie, who said anything about Romney? I'm not exonerating Bush for any of his crimes. I'm saying that THIS crime is 100% Arab. Oh yeah, Saddam was beloved and benevolent. Just ask the Kurds.

Mel Smith, why don't you throw the Arab world's first gay pride parade? Pick an Arab country, any Arab country. Prance around in your star-spangled underwear demanding tolerance and preaching love. Let's see if you make it to the afterparty.

It's almost hysterical watching liberals bend over backwards (pardon the pun) to defend the savage animals who would kill them. Almost.
