Missouri 'Don't Say Gay' Bill Sponsor: School Discussion of LGBT Issues Will Lead to Talk of Boys Marrying Goats

Last week I mentioned that, like Tennessee, Missouri also has a disgusting "don't say gay" bill which is advancing in the state legislature. The discussion around the bill is equally despicable:

ScharnhorstThe HuffPo reports:

House Small Business Committee Chairman Dwight Scharnhorst (R-St. Louis), a co-sponsor, said he believes sexual orientation issues should be taught by parents, clergy and physicians. Parents have been passing along responsibility for children to the public schools, partly because of the writings of the late pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock, Scharnhorst said.

Scharnhorst told HuffPost that teaching about LGBT issues would lead to other discussions. "There is no need to talk about Billy wanting to marry a goat," he said.

State Rep. Stephen Webber (D-Columbia), a leading opponent of the bill, said he is not surprised by its introduction because Missouri Republicans have been wanting to limit discussion of LGBT issues. Webber pointed to the defeat of his bill to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation for the past several years. He said that while some Republicans have privately expressed support for the bill, political concerns prevent them from voting for it.

  1. oh yeah. because we've all seen how effective conservative parents have been in this country, teaching their children about racial diversity and equality, how to respect those that are different from you and how one's religion, gender, identity and ethnicity doesn't make anyone better than anyone else, oh and imparting healthy eating habits and mindfulness.

    f**k off.

the reason schools are stepping in is because far too many lazy ineffective parents have utterly dropped the ball.

  2. Mr. Dwight Scharnhorst, so who just talked of boys marrying goats ? Please don‘t give any more ideas to young boys Mr. Dwight Scharnhorst.

  3. "There is no need to talk about Billy wanting to marry a goat," he said.

and yet he talked about it . Lol ..
Someone find me the email address of him. I am going to write a complain that he is the one putting these dirty ideas in kids by mentioning them.

  4. Just because Mr. Scharnhorst was unsure whether to marry a woman or a goat doesn't mean that everyone is unsure.

  5. There is absolutely no need to talk about Billy marrying a goat (I see what you did there) because goats do not have the same rights as humans. I do not hear the goats clamoring for human rights, nor do I hear anyone clamoring for animals to have the same rights as humans. So you are right, there is absolutely need to talk about manimal marriage.

And my god, other discussions? You mean students in school would have discussions about their own points of view on social matters? And they might *GASP* be exposed to a view that is not their own? And they might then *GASP* learn from that dissenting view point and maybe grow as a person? I've NEVER heard of something so outrageous in all my life

  6. "next we'll be having kids coming home from school and saying 'Mommy, today I learned about the Holocaust. I'm confused. Wasn't Hitler just doing what God wanted, since Jews reject Christ? Or am I wrong, and Jews are just as good as us? Do they go to heaven? if not, why do i have to be nice to them?"

i mean, hey, why not? sure, a parent has a right to raise a bigotty nitwit, but a school should be protecting students from bigotry, not protecting bigotry from reality.

  7. This is why Missouri ranks at the very bottom of places to 'LIVE IN PEACE' a survey out this week. Republican politicians like this have ravaged this state...SHAME!

  8. Haven't looked at the details of this bill yet (but I will since I used to live in Missouri), but if it truly bans discussion of sexual orientation, wouldn't that include heterosexuals too? No discussions of Mommy and Daddy and "When I get married?" How is he going to limit what is and isn't discussed?

  9. Really...how dumb is that? I think its past dumb but stupidity

  10. "There is no need to talk about Billy wanting to marry a goat," he said

Hey, don't knock man-goat marriage. I mean at least the cheese would be free, right? (a joke, folks, just a joke!)

  11. the amazing thing is that if you look at the economies and health f the people living in these States, they aint great. so, why do they continue to vote GOP? simple - because the GOP counts on stupid people caring about stupid things for stupid reasons.

you get a collection of idiots who vote against their own financial interests, who cast votes that make their own families broke. and yet they're happy. why? because their elected official hates gays and wants to make Christianity the "official state religion".

you please a dumb@ss with bogus social policies that don't affect them, in any way, and then bleed them dry.

  13. "A school should be protecting students from bigotry, not protecting bigotry from reality"

    DING DING DING!

Seriously, isn't the purpose of eduction to replace ignorance with knowledge? What do these people think, that if you don't talk about it, it will just go away? News flash! The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name didn't need to speak its name in order to exist. It existed before "gay," it existed before "homosexual," it existed before pejoratives.

Keep kids ignorant. Ensure that "different" is always scary, always "the other." Enlightenment and awareness is suspect, and leads to tolerance, which we just can't have.

"Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me" - Nah.

  17. what's up in places like Missouri where talk of sex with farm animals so easily rises to the surface?

  18. Is there something in the water in the US that produces this kind of idiot or is it just a result of inbreeding? There seems to be so many of them, and what worse so many seem to have been able to get themselves elected to public office by many other idiots. There should be a Congressional Committee set up to investigate the cause......but it would probably be populated with similar idiots.

  19. darn, since I can't marry another man, I was just getting ready to marry a goat.... I wonder if I can marry an elephant.

  20. Missouri legislators are putting there nose where it doesn’t belong just like our Governor Bill Haslam here in TN has pushed his agenda of discrimination throughout his brief tenure in office from shooting down Nashville's anti-discrimination laws to creating the bill banning the use of the word "gay" in public schools. He's railroading civil liberties to the extent of making it illegal to upload a "potentially offensive image" to the internet this year. I addressed our Governor's antics with a visual commentary of him and his wife on my artist's blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/07/potentially-offensive-portrait-governor.html Drop by and let me know how you feel about our rights being infringed upon.

  21. Finally, Missouri supports a bill that makes sense. Much better than in California where teachers are forced to teach about gays DURING CLASS TIME over actual, more important topics.
