North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue Speaks Out Against Anti-Gay Amendment One: VIDEO

North Carolina's Governor Bev Perdue posted a strong video yesterday expressing her opposition to North Carolina's Amendment One, which would constitutionally ban same-sex marriage, civil unions, and domestic partnerships.

Says Perdue: "Whatever your personal, moral or religious views might be, writing discrimination into North Carolina’s constitution is just plain wrong...It would ban the state from recognizing civil unions, strip away domestic partner benefits and it actually could eliminate legal protections for all unmarried couples in the state. This will harm the stability and security of North Carolina families like never before....The amendment I believe is dangerous for women. There is a real risk that some laws we have on the books now to protect the victims of domestic violence may no longer apply to many women in the state."

  1. Fantastic! Well argued! Hate that we have to say how this will affect straight people in order to ensure a defeat, but whatevs.

  2. The amendment that passed in Ohio was/is much the same: outlaws all civil unions, gay AND straight. That point was brought up at the time, but it scarcely made a difference in how things turned out.

I'm really optimisitc that NC can beat this amendment tho, it's rather amazing how many "conservatives" are speaking out against it. Must be a combination of the changing times (whew!) and the fact that Karl Rove isn't running the Repug strategy this time around. His particular brand of scare tactics is what really killed us in Ohio.
