Awesome Kid Won't Stand For Westboro's Bigotry

Via Gawker comes this picture of 9-year old Josef Miles protesting the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church. Apparently Miles and his mother were driving around Topeka, Kansas, spotted the group chanting its typical hate, and Miles asked to pull over so he could stage a solo protest.

"Josef was determined to make his own statement so we went to the car and with pencil and his sketch pad, he made up his own little sign that reads 'GOD HATES NO ONE,'" his mother Patty wrote on Facebook. "Those people are scary but he stood strong, was respectful and stood by his convictions. He will be a good man, I have no doubt."

  1. As noble as that little boy is, the signs are designed (badly, though I do love Kabel, which is a frequent font they use) to garner media attention and get them more exposure to people who may feel the same as them. Thanks for contributing to their potential reach and frequency as that one boy also happens to pose with the group's direct contact on his back.

  2. Give it a rest... ANYone who will see the signs in this instance has already seen them. What will stick in people's minds here is the simple but effective message offered by the boy.

  3. Again a small hand written message of love wins big time those hateful signs.

  4. That is a GREAT kid! And his mom is right -- he will be a great man.

  5. It's called juxtaposition, JonBenet, and it works.

  6. @RatBastard it kind of depends on how it's used and by what media outlet (God does, indeed, hate the media, but he loves rim jobs). Fox and Friends might be talking right now about how the obese child of liberal brainwashers (who bought him that horrible t-shirt) is making a half-assed sign that reflects the work ethic of our newest generation (but that hate is, also, a strong word, and Gretchen will probably mention that she doesn't exactly minds those types...the gays).

  7. My heart is always warmed by little kids having "Emperor has no clothes" moments and calling out bigotry in simple, direct ways because their hearts tell them it's wrong. Think about it: that kid has more guts than probably several million men who would be afraid to take on Westboro, or come out of the closet themselves. I say Bravo!

  8. @JonBenet,

Yeah, I think now you're over-analyzing and being a little paranoid, and that says something coming from me ;-)

  9. @Ratbastard has it exactly right on this one.

  10. 1) Many people say 'God hates gays' and keep using the word 'God'. The fact is Jesus Christ (being the foundation of Christianity) NEVER CONDEMNED HOMOSEXUALITY ! So either those people are taking GOP as GOD, which by the way GOP are indeed one of the biggest bigot, or those religious nuts are worshiping a different 'God' other than Jesus. Either way homophobes bigots are ANTICHRIST !

    2) To Christianity, they are followers of Christ and it's clearly stated that they should follow his top commandments which are above all other laws. The top commandments are to love God and to love your neighbor as yourself. So again, religious nuts are ANTICHRIST when they bring others laws to be above those of Jesus top commandments!

  13. Some people say God created Adam and Eve, but Adam and Eve were the GREATEST SINNERS OF THEIR TIME, CONDEMNED, BANISHED AND KICKED OUT BY GOD from the garden of Eden! Outch!!

  14. The way to make the WBC go away forever is to treat them like the trolls they are: completely and utterly ignore them. Don't counter-protest; don't give them media time; don't comment on blog posts about them.

Eventually, if they are utterly ignored, they will get bored and go away.

  16. Oh jeez, enough with the negativity: the kid is a hero.

  17. if god hates gays how come it never made his top ten list, but to all those like gingrich and trump adultery did make the top ten list. and to maggie and bristol the bible calls for the stoning of non virgins.

  18. @BryanB, No, Westboro won't go away. This is how this church/family survives, how they make their money. They'll keep doing this, getting a few donations from idiots, collecting damages in ludicrous lawsuits and generally making themselves infernal nuisances. Even after the old man croaks (please God, SOON!) the family will continue its campaign of hate. This is their racket, and it's how they make their money. God is just their window dressing.

  19. Josef,
    +1 respect!

Way cool, little man! You stand taller than most grown men I know!

  20. Amazing! I appreciate this so much! I am not religious at all and at time's I fondle with the idea but when I see this stuff it makes me wonder what people who preach are thinking. "Hate" is the one word that we all grew up knowing as devious but people can throw it out there for religious beliefs??!

  21. All change happens ultimately through
change that starts with what we teach
    our children. Period.
