Man Behind Potential Wright Smear Is Father Of Laura Ricketts, The First Openly Gay MLB Team Owner

Here's an interesting update to the report that Cubs co-owner Joe Ricketts may use Jeremiah Wright to smear president Obama. Andy pointed out to me that Ricketts' daughter is another Cubs co-owner, Laura Ricketts, a Lambda Legal board member and the first openly gay owner of a major league baseball team.

Ms. Ricketts, seen above with former Supreme Court Justice John Stevens, also attended a $35,800-ticket D.C. fundraiser for President Obama in February. Family dinners in the Ricketts home must be quite the scene.

Meanwhile, the Obama campaign has released its own statement on the potential Wright campaign:

This morning's story revealed the appalling lengths to which Republican operatives and SuperPacs apparently are willing to go to tear down the President and elect Mitt Romney. The blueprint for a hate-filled, divisive campaign of character assassination speaks for itself.

It also reflects how far the party has drifted in four short years since John McCain rejected these very tactics.  Once again, Governor Romney has fallen short of the standard that John McCain set, reacting tepidly in a moment that required moral leadership in standing up to the very extreme wing of his own party.

  1. when you can't actually talk about jobs and the economy and promote your own plan to help actual American citizens, you choose instead to promote the spectre of a brown foreign terrorist boogyeman.

  2. @Little New Zealander/Canadian,

What you said is true. It's also true the 'other side' [i.e. hardcore progressives/liberals/leftists] do the exact same thing. It's not a characteristic unique to 'conservatives'.

  4. Jeremiah Wright is a POS. Obama could have put this to bed 4 years ago by simply denouncing Wright and apologizing for any contribution his relationship with Wright may have made to promoting the racism of the UCC. Instead, he's trying to dance around it, which makes him look guilty.

  5. the only people who still think this is an issue are racist white folks who are still bitter about being forced to Integrate.

  6. "Instead, he's trying to dance around it, which makes him look guilty."

You're talking like it's still 2008. Obama is not dancing around anything. This has been a dead issue for three years.

  7. "Jeremiah Wright is a POS."

And right-wing Conservative Americans are used condoms...after anal use. But that doesn't bother Rick Santorum.

  8. What is in the water the Republicans are drinking down there?

Honestly, it feels like they're committing some kind of perverse mass suicide.

  9. Republicans are having their water imported from the poisoned well in Florida.

  10. To David Hearn: So weak when people bring up Wright. Point to one piece of legislation from Obama that reflects what he heard in that church; that's the difference between the left and the right. When you people attempt to conflate the right's behavior with the left, you have no tangible proof.

The right's platform is specifically based on bigoted/religious dogma.

Obama does not take his cues from Wright, nothing he has done as president is a reflection on whatever nonsense you think he heard from Wright, so mentioning that name is just a red herring.

You people have NOTHING but your hyperbole, hysteria and delusions - nothing based in reality.

  12. Interesting that this blog chooses to identify Mr. Ricketts, the billionaire as a ball club owner. But he is much more and the Cubs are not the source of his wealth. That dear readers is TD Ameritrade and I assume TD Bank as well. So, if your stock trade account is there, or your IRA money, you have helped make this foamer of the far-right the wealthy troublemaker-hater that he is. Transfer your business NOW!

  13. You ain't seen nothin yet. Billionaire right wingers are going to spend tens of millions of dollars trying to convince Americans that Obama just ain't one of us. Don't bet the farm that they won't succeed.

  17. Contrarian, if my 401(k) was still worth anything I'd move it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, I don't think moving $1.47 is going to register on Joe Ricketts' radar.
