NEWS: Dumb Florida, Dumb Jocks, And Love In The Big Apple

FloridaStupid+A Road Florida lowered FCAT language requirements to keep two thirds of the state's kids from failing. Half failed anyway.

Road New York's most senior gay public servant was married today:

Christine Quinn, New York's highest-ranking openly gay official and the leading candidate to be the city's next mayor, married her longtime girlfriend on Saturday, walking down the aisle to Beyonce's "Ave Maria."

Quinn, the speaker of the New York City Council and a vocal advocate of same-sex marriage, wore a full-length, cream-colored gown designed by Carolina Herrera and a hair comb fashioned with family heirlooms.

Quinn's wife, New York lawyer Kim Catullo, wore a cream silk evening suit designed by Ralph Lauren. Catullo, who like Quinn is 45, walked in to Bruce Springsteen's "If I Should Fall Behind."

Cuomo, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly were among the 275 guests.

Road Of gays and the boobtube:

Some producers say they have marveled at how fast the opinions of television viewers have changed, even as gay rights activists have marveled at how voters across the country have shifted on gay marriage.

“What this is about, really, is how far America has come, not how far television has come,” said Christopher Lloyd, a co-creator of “Modern Family.”

Shonda Rhimes, the “Grey’s Anatomy” producer, recalled having to “go to the mattresses with broadcast standards and practices” at ABC in 2006 to insist on preserving a steamy shower sequence with three female doctors. That sequence was just a fantasy in the mind of one of the male characters — but now six years later, in the show’s version of reality, two female doctors are married. “Nobody even blinked” at the relationship, Ms. Rhimes said.

The only outcry she recalled came when one of the doctors, Arizona, flirted with a man. “It was from lesbians who said, ‘How dare she sleep with a man!’ ”

  1. OK, that Florida drawing made me laugh.

  2. As for Jones, he has not exactly made an impression for the Mavs, it would not be surprising for him to be traded away soon. If he thinks that starting a crusade against the Gays is a good idea for his career path, he really is as dumb as a box of rocks.

  6. The even sadder part is that 12 people "liked" Jones anti-gay comments.

  8. Wow Mr. Jones seems like a good candidate for the study on why homophobes are really gay.

But more importantly, those are some stupid ass tats you got there brah.

  10. Speaker Quinn looked lovely in her gown - much trimmer and prettier than she normally looks. Wouldn't it be amazing if next year New York City ended up electing a married lesbian as mayor? Not sure the blue collar folks would go for this, though. But it would be a hell of a statement about how far the LGBT community AND marriage equality have come if this happened.

  12. You are too generous in your assessment of Dominque Jones' basketball talents. They wouldn't even accept him in the Euro basketball leagues, he's that mediocre. However, there will most certainly be a booming career for him on the evangie-fundie homophobes for Jesus circuit.

  13. Was the NBA season shortened this year? Don't they usually play 82 regular season games?

  14. Look at the demographics of the Florida public school student population and the FCAT results won't surprise you. Like many places, people send their kids to private schools if at all possible. We also have a huge homeschool movement here. Down the street from me is a private school that black people started because they don't want their kids in the public schools either. So guess who that leaves? It leaves the kids who aren't properly parented, who started school unable to read or do math and who haven't progressed much since then.

School vouchers are not the problem here. The problem is that lumping well behaved, smart, and ready for school kids in with kids who can't or won't learn doesn't improve the latter, it drags down the former.

  16. As stupid as he is, there are plenty of 'Americans' who ignore morals or law. He's entitled to spout off as much as anyone, exposing his own self-loathing (plenty o' folks in DFW aren't fooled by his faux macho drivel). We're free to call him on it. It's those quiet types you have to look out for, not the mouthy ones.
