Dr. Robert Spitzer Speaks at Length About the Hatred of Groups Pushing 'Ex-Gay' Myths: VIDEO

Spitzer

Dr. Robert Spitzer, a psychiatrist who published a controversial 2001 study suggesting that in rare instances gay people could change their sexual orientation, retracted those claims in an American Prospect article published in April and issued an apology to the gay community.

"Ex-gay" watchdog group Truth Wins out followed up with Spitzer in an interview at his home in Princeton, New Jersey, in which he talks about the hatred of those pushing the "ex-gay" myth and apologizes again.

  1. Too bad he didn't think about the study before releasing it, thus removing any of his doubts. The harm this man has caused is overwhelming to the community when it comes to the hatred being perpetrated.

  2. Um, he actually has done more good by getting homosexuality out of the DSM to begin with.

  3. that video is still up. Towleroad should contact the group & ask why it's still up when it's been demanded by Mr. Spitzer to remove it! great article! this needs to be given WAY more traction in the media, but of course it won't be, sadly.

  4. the whole ex-gay thing also hinges on what they call "unwanted attractions/desires".

but why is it unwanted? simple - because of anti-gay bigots.

in a world without overwhelming anti-gay prejudice there'd be no reason at all for a person to "not want" to be who and what they are.

the video is depressing. but this is what ex-gays are: people who choose to break a commandment to God by lying every day in order to appease lowly mortal beings who claim to "care about God"

    which they don't.

  5. He never should have retreated the study because of political pressure; he just hurt his own credibility and reputation by doing so.

To claim that every single person that believes they are gay (or straight, or bi, for that matter !) can *never* change their sexual orientation, without exception, smacks of a forced agenda, not of scientific exploration.

It's an absolute; and as such should be studied, questioned, challenged at every level.

Also, people commenting on a study that they've never even bothered to read, and equating it with something it is compleatly unrelated to - while this type of thing might make for atypical journalism and political posturing, it is, in fact, just another form of intellectual dishonesty/bankruptcy.

LOL "believes they are gay" "forced agenda"
If anyone is forcing an agenda it sure isn't us. Try harder next time!

  7. Try reading the study, try knowing who i is you're talking about (this is not a researcher with an anti-gay agenda, after all), and try responding to points.

    Take your own advise !

  9. NYTODD,

Have you read the 'study'.? I doubt you have as you somehow seem to think that the study was legitimate in some way. I agree that this is a question that could be looked into. However, defending a broken study in the process only shows your lack of critical thinking...
