Mary Cheney had married Heather Poe, ABC News reports:

In a statement issue by Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne, said, ”Our daughter Mary and her long time partner, Heather Poe, were married today in Washington, DC. Mary and Heather have been in a committed relationship for many years, and we are delighted that they were able to take advantage of the opportunity to have that relationship recognized.”

The former vice president added, “Mary and Heather and their children are very important and much loved members of our family and we wish them every happiness.”

Dick Cheney has publicly supported marriage equality for three years now. He first expressed support in June 2009 in an appearance at the National Press Club.

  2. OK liberals, I want you to take a deep breath before your tourettes begin.

Congratulations to the both of them and I wish them a very happy life ahead of them.

And once you leftists have finished wetting your pants, keep in mind that Cheney endorsed gay marriage LONG before Obama ever did.

  6. Ms. Cheney deserves absolutely no well-wishes from the LGBT community - a community she exploited to gain $$ for Coors, then turned around and spat on as head of operations for the Vice Presidential portion of the 2004 campaign. Ms. Cheney was involved in campaign strategy that used the worst types of anti-gay propaganda to demonize LGBT citizens and ensure the Bush/Cheney re-electiong. Now she wants to take advantage of rights ensured for her by activists who fought the very attitudes she used in 2004? How typical of those with privilege. At least Ken Mehlman has the decency to be somewhat embarrassed by his conduct during the election.

  7. So tired of these conservatives destroying the moral fibre of this country. Cheney, Rove, REAGAN! Didn't they get Tony's talking points....

  8. I wonder if Maggie Gallagher was invited to the nuptials? Or Romney? Or the Bachmanns? Or Tony Perkins and Bryan Fischer? Or ANY prominent Republicans.

Every manners guide book says the only appropriate thing to say to a newlywed couple is "Congratulations" and so I will wish them well.

Also remember Obama is the first President to endorse, I guess they both are a first. For me both appreciated

  10. "And once you leftists have finished wetting your pants, keep in mind that Cheney endorsed gay marriage LONG before Obama ever did."

Dude, give me a break. Cheney only endorsed gay marriage once his political career was as dead as his heart now is. Before that he used it as a political tool against his opponents and demonized it to the point where it could potentially damage someone's political career if they came out in favor of it. He could have given his support while he was in office, but that never happened.

And, yes to CPT_DOOM. 100% exactly.

  11. Congrats, I guess. I hope some of the GOP guests will now push from within to change their party. However, I thought they lived in VA where no gay marriages are recognized. And is she supporting Romney who has promised to amend the US Constitution to forcibly annul her marriage. Is Cheney Sr.?

  12. Fail Alan, FAIL.
Cheney doesn't have to worry about re-election, you dimwit.

  15. The REAL Threat to the Sanctity of Marriage (Not Gays)
    http://trenchpress.com/?p=12034

Social conservatives distracted by gay marriage are missing the big picture
    http://trenchpress.com/?p=12686

Fake conservatives like the Cheney family should not be the issue. It is just as much government's role to marry someone as it is to Baptize , give Communion, or Bar Mitzvah someone.

Gay couples are targeting the wrong institution, all for government benefits.

  17. “Mary and Heather and their children are very important and much loved members of our family and we wish them every happiness.”

This to me sounds a bit forced. How about something like this...

Mary is our daughter. There is nothing that can change the absolute 100% love we have for her and wish her happiness. She found the love of her life and wishes to formalize this relationship as others do. We as her parents offer our complete support despite what arguement society may contrive to disagree with her/their relationship. Liberty and Justice FOR ALL!!!!!!!!

  19. @ALAN,1st. Cheney was out of office when he endorsed marriage equality with no plan or prospect of being re-elected. hardly a profile in courage. so what if Cheney endorsed marriage equality and when? it is not chronology that counts, it is whether or not he is in a position of power at the time he made the endorsement. 2nd. he was not president, (although in reality he effectively was POTUS in all but name), he was the VP. Obama is a sitting president and risked alienating some voters in an election year no less. he could have kept punting the issue until after the election. 3rd. marriage equality is not solely a liberal issue, in fact there are plenty of valid and sensible conservative arguments in favor of marriage equality, look them up. and finally, while i am happy for the newlyweds what is so galling is Mary Cheney's hypocrisy in supporting and shilling for a political party that has sought and is seeking to deny her the very right she just exercised, and if they come to power to forcibly annul her marriage. That is why us 'liberals' get pissed off. it is her willingness to take advantage of a right, hard won on her behalf by us so called liberals while she supports a party that would deny her same.

  20. I guess I should be happy that she's done this, but I get the same nauseated feeling I get when the Ku Klux Klan has a march -- they're exercising their rights, but GOD they're just despicable examples of humanity.
