Kansas Board of Education Candidate is Westboro Baptist Worshiper Who Calls Evolution 'Satanic Lies'

I guess there's a clear choice now in the Kansas Board of Education race.

WuLJWorld reports:

Jack Wu told The Topeka Capital-Journal that he decided to run for the State Board of Education after learning that Democratic incumbent Carolyn Campbell, also from Topeka, would otherwise be unopposed for a second term in the 4th District of eastern Kansas. Campbell supports the state’s current science standards, which treat evolution as a well-established, core scientific concept.

Wu’s link to the Rev. Fred Phelps Sr.’s congregation has created a buzz in education circles. On a campaign website, Wu says he is a native of California drawn to the Kansas capital “after seeing the light of the Westboro Baptist Church.”

The Capital Journal adds:

Wu couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Wednesday, but his campaign website states he is a native of California who “moved to Topeka, Kansas after seeing the light of the Westboro Baptist Church.”

The website, www.jpwu.info, appears to be under construction. Under a “Biography” link, the site states that Wu’s mission in running for office is to “make a difference in this evil city of Topeka and this perverse state of Kansas.” It goes on to say that students “don’t need Satanic lies like evolution filling their heads, and if elected to office, Jack would like to purge such lies from the curriculum.”

Reached by phone Wednesday, Westboro Baptist spokeswoman Shirley Phelps-Roper said Wu is an “acquaintance,” but isn’t a member of the church. “He’s just a friendly little guy,” Phelps-Roper said. “I know who he is, he lives in my neighborhood, but he’s not a member of our church.” Phelps-Roper said she wasn’t aware of Wu’s candidacy.

Rachel Hockenbarger was picketing outside The Topeka Capital-Journal on Wednesday and identified herself as a member of Westboro Baptist. Hockenbarger confirmed that Wu isn’t a member, but said it isn’t unusual to spot him at Westboro Baptist services. “He attends church on a somewhat regular basis,” Hockenbarger said. “You don’t have to be a member to attend. You just have to behave yourself.”

(h/t good as you)

  1. Wasn't there a serial killer named Wu? Perhaps they are related.

  2. Hang on. He's not the gay guy who came to Westboro from San Francisco, is he? He was in the second of Louis Theroux's documentary about the Phelps clan.

  4. School board elections is how theocrats have taken over the US. It's a highly flawed idea.

  5. That's him alright
    Good work Mr. Rattigan!

  6. A lot of people in Kansas (and elsewhere in the US) agree with this kind of thinking, but don't like to think of themselves as being like the WBC, even though they are. I think it's great that people will have to confront the reality of who they are -- are you on board with the WBC or not? Are you one of these psychotic homophobes? This being Kansas, I'm not at all certain that people will reject the crazed hater...

  7. Wait, Westboro actually has congregants who are not linear descendants of the pastor?

  8. I say as many people as possible vote for this guy. Kansas deserves their laughing-stock title and should be rewarded for consistent behavior.

  10. Wow! His "website" is even more juvenile than WBC.

And on his home page: "... if you live in this district, you had better vote for me in the November 6, 2012 general election!"

Yeah, threats are a great way to garner votes.

  11. @Steve,

As opposed to appointed, unanswerable, political hacks and technocrats? Get 'progressives', Marxist, whomever has an ideology that appeals to you to run for these school board positions. If the general public who are served by these elected school board members don't like them, they can force them out.

Academia has for a long time now been the haven overwhelmingly of the FAR left [one of the few places on Earth where Marxism can be earnestly discussed and extolled with a straight face is in the so-called Ivy Tower environments, and I'm talking about not just universities, but grade and HS. In Sweden they start the political correctness brainwashing by the age of 3. Of course people will counter me by saying other institutions like religions and advertisers/marketers for big business likewise get at young kids to brainwash them. This is also true. But, at the end of the day, I suppose these elected school boards are one of the few opportunities for the far right loons to get a foot in the door.

    ====================

IMO the Westboro Baptist Church clan are MEGA trolls, and this Wu guy is a part of the scheme.

  15. Shame on Towleroad for giving publicity to the Phelps' family.

The WBC are master media manipulators who survive solely on publicity.

Why is Towleroad promoting the WBC?

  16. "He's not the gay guy who came to Westboro from San Francisco, is he?"

@David Rattigan: That was good spotting on your part, except that he did not say he's gay but just that he is doomed to hell because he is not a proper member of the church of our Lord Jesus Christ (which apparently he has decided is Westboro Baptist).
Shirley Phelps-Roper's attitude toward him is interesting. She says you can't just come here from san Francisco and be welcomed as a member right away without your deeds being evaluated by the members. You can just hear the disdain dripping from her lips as she says the name of the city thought of as the modern Sodom and Gomorrah to the fundamentalists.
I also notice that everyone else is white. I don't know what is worse to the Westboro members: that Wu is from San Francisco, that he comes across as effeminate or that he looks Chinese. I suspect that any one of these would make him less worthy in their eyes.

He is obviously a very self-hating and deluded person. I would guess he may be gay and knows that in that and in other ways (Chinese background, effeminate, etc.) he is thoroughly brainswahed into feeling worthless. Wu, no noubt, imagines that hateful people have some sort of power over him and he is desparately seeking worth by winning over their approval.

  18. Talking about "light" at Westboro is like claiming to have found beef Wellington at Macdonalds. Only deep darkness and toxic waste there.

  19. @Ratbastard:

"In Sweden they start the political correctness brainwashing by the age of 3."

Care to elaborate? Statements like this should not be posted without more info.

But then, you have issues with PC, don't you? So what exactly is this PC brainwashing?
