haha… LOVE her. Why shouldn’t she show skin at 53? We get more worked up about that than we do about her flashing a gun on stage and faux-killing people. It’s silly. We all have human bodies. We are all nude under our clothes. We all age. Get over it. If only we could all look as good as her at 53. She’s been a sexual renegade and sh!t disturber for years… why stop now? She’s just breaking yet another taboo, and that’s why we love her.

  2. Ben says

Watching the Today Show “professionals” panelists complain and whine about this was hilarious. The aged were ageist!

Madonna has always and will continue to confound people based on THEIR expectations OF her. That she can make people feel that way is astounding. If everyone ignored it would be the only failure possible.

I have nothing against her showing booty or nip at any age – in a well-choreographed routine, maybe – but something about this seems beyond narcissistic, like she’s way too desperate for attention.

  5. Mario says

Can’t wait for TR resident demagogue LittiWiWi to get on and call everyone anonymous cowards for DARING to say anything even remotely critical of Madonna.

  6. laughing out loud says

“I never know what’s going to happen when I get to Rome.” I think she did it for the Pope. sorta “kiss my ass” attitude showing

  7. GraphicJack says

Terry… she may be a narcissist… I’d argue that anyone in the entertainment business is to a certain extent. What she also is is a truth teller, a sh!t disturber and someone who is always willing to challenge convention. The name of the song is Human Nature. The lyrics are being unapologetic/unashamed for Madonna being Madonna… and for calling out others for their own prudish attitudes towards sexuality. She’s brilliant here because she’s challenging other people’s perceptions about what mature women should be like/dress like/act like. She’s saying it’s okay to love your body and love sex, and to be a sexual being at any age. Isn’t that an empowering and awesome message to send to women, to gay men, to anyone? To love yourself, to be free of narrow-minded attitudes? That’s why it’s not just a stunt or a “desperate” move for attention. Once again, people fail to understand her because their own hang-ups get in the way.

  8. Henry Holland says

“Since flashing her nip in Istanbul caused the world to squeal, gasp, and/or throw its hands up in the air screaming ‘she’s too old’ ”

    You forgot “or yawn”.

  9. says

She looks great but the point is not “look how hot I am”—it’s just funny. And in context of the song (as with the nip flip), it’s about, “This is not that big of a deal.” As for being a narcissist or attention whore, duh, of course she is—she’s an entertainer and artist.

  10. Henry Holland says

“Once again, people fail to understand her because their own hang-ups get in the way”

YAWN. Some of us know cultural history that happened before 1980 and Josephine Baker was 10 times more provocative in 1920/30’s Paris than this cold, calculating, musically-talentless woman could ever be. Mae West was genuinely more radical than Ciccone could ever hope to be, in a time when the penalties for trangressing gender roles were much higher than a bunch of hacks on a TV show clutching their pearls.

She’s not doing anything that hasn’t been done over and over before, by women who didn’t have a tiny section of the Internet fixated over their every move.

We don’t “fail to understand her”, we get it because she’s *doing nothing original*

  11. GraphicJack says

Henry… go back to bed if you are so tired… so much yawning… wow.

Well, is anything ever original? Nope… but the message still needs to be said if people are STILL so upset about a little nip/booty flash… and by someone who is more mature. Who cares if it’s original, it’s still relevant if people are getting this worked up about it. And considering how much flack she’s always gotten for being a sexual renegade, and how much she’s still getting for it, it seems pretty clear that she still needs to be pushing our buttons to drill the lesson in that we are WAY to hung-up about nudity and body issues, and still are sexist when it comes to women being in control of their own sexuality.

  12. Dairyqueen says

Oh Grandma, no wants to see your old titty or ass. Madge needs to get over that fact her Pop queen status is fading away. She is music for older people now. My 16 year old niece is like “she’s old, and trying too hard to sound like today pop stars.” I have to agree. The fact she is starting feuds with stars like Gaga who is half her age is kind of sad.

  13. MadgeisaVadge says

Lady Gaga has more talent than this tramp. Lady Gaga would never pull any stunts like this because she has TALENT. I hope after that stunt Madonna gets breast cancer. Mother Monster RULES forever!

  14. Alex N says

To anyone who is calling her desperate for attention, two things: Have you ever asked yourself who it is that stalks her every move and makes her as relevant today as ever? It’s as much the responsibility of those taking the time to criticize her as it is her followers’. Secondly, she is on a stage in front of 50,000 people. I think she has all the attention she need. The world will always be curious about Madonna.

  15. Drew says

Yes, once upon a time it was edgy. Once upon a time it was outlandish and crazy and “OMG-she-did-what?!?” to show your ariola on stage. Now, in the post-Janet Jackson nipple-slip world we live in? Not so much.

Convention nowadays is to be a hot drunken mess with either an accidental tit-out or flashing everyone with your lady (or man) parts. In this day and age I would be surprised, shocked, and flabbergasted if she came out in a turtle neck. Nothing sexually provocative shocks me anymore short of actual sex on a stage.

And it has nothing to do with how old she is, or comparisons to anyone else. Nothing can take what Madonna has done for pop music away from here. Just, stop trying so damn hard for attention.

“Who cares if it’s original, it’s still relevant if people are getting this worked up about it”

It’s a largely online-created “firestorm of controversy” that is exactly like Bill Donohue’s Catholic League: it’s one guy in a NY apartment sending out press releases but the media thinks he represents millions of people and so they freak out “Millions of Catholics oppose this that or the other thing”. I’ll be outraged about what I want to be outraged about, not what Towleroad or TMZ tell me to be outraged about.

“it seems pretty clear that she still needs to be pushing our buttons to drill the lesson in that we are WAY to hung-up about nudity and body issues”

Wow! Thanks Madonna, until you pointed that out, nobody knew that! Oh, wait, there’s an entire feminist blogosphere that’s been writing about that for at least a decade > 2nd wave feminists & their heirs for even longer.

“and still are sexist when it comes to women being in control of their own sexuality”

Again, something that’s so freaking obvious that Madonna doing it has no impact, it’s devolved in to a calculated schtick for her, it’s about as “dangerous” and “provocative” as her kissing Britney Spears years ago.

“Now, in the post-Janet Jackson nipple-slip world we live in? Not so much”

Hahahaha, so true. Way to be 8 years behind the curve Madge.

“The world will always be curious about Madonna”

The world consists of over 7 billion people, I seriously doubt 99.99% of them give a damn about an 80’s pop star promoting her mediocre new CD in concert.

  18. chaddy d says

Wow. Henry Holland. By commenting 4 times on this post alone you’ve managed to convince me you have absolutely no interest in what Madonna does. (Sarcasm) I would probably be more willing to believe you and the other commenters saying they are bored of and have no interest in Madonna’s antics if they hadn’t clicked on the link to this post about her and then took the time to write a comment about it. Just an observation people, if you vehemently HATE someone and pray for and actively work to promote their downfall, then that person is NOT IRRELEVANT TO YOU. They actually take up quite a bit of space in your brain, all be it negative space. Nothing new for someone like Madonna to have so many people hating her. As evidenced by what she did in Rome, she thanks you guys for taking the time to think about her soooooo much!

  19. Josh says

Let’s talk about her “singing” live….This WOMAN IS NOT A SINGER!! Please ask Madonna to sing the National Anthem Live! That would be AWESOME!

  20. Henry Holland says

    “if you vehemently HATE someone”

I don’t HATE Madonna Ciccone, I just find her music and persona really boring. What I’m interested in is how the mass media works and how fake so many of the “controversies” that supposedly has “everyone talking!!!” are.

“pray for and actively work to promote their downfall”

See, that’s why I commented, it’s deranged comments like that. How is commenting on an obscure gay blog helping her “downfall”?

“then that person is NOT IRRELEVANT TO YOU”

Duh, again with a Madonnabot stating the obvious.

“As evidenced by what she did in Rome, she thanks you guys for taking the time to think about her soooooo much!”

No, I’m not giving her any money by buying her stupid SEX book or any other merch or buying her dreadful new album or buying her obscenely overpriced concert tickets, so she wouldn’t be thankful at all, not in the slightest. If I’m not adding to her bank balance, I’m not a factor.

I’m glad Andy gets the ad revenue from me, though.

  21. chaddy d says

Cool Henry. You find Madonna boring. I see. You know I find pottery classes boring, unlike the millions of people who do enjoy that kind of thing, but I certainly don’t take the time out to comment on pottery-related websites and/or blog posts about how boring I find it. And I certainly dont do it 5 times within a couple of hours like how you have managed to do so on this topic. Doing so might make me seem, umm, obsessed. For someone who finds Madonna so boring, you sure have devoted alot of time to talking about her today have’nt you? It is for that reason I say Madonna would be grateful to you… you keep talking about her, even if with disdain. That, I believe was the point of Andy’s post. Madonna wont go away or be told how to behave no matter how much animosity is heaped upon her…… Espcially by folks who say they have no interest in her. 😉

  22. anony6 says

    Somebody hit the snooze button!

All this would be more interesting if Madonna was actually making good music. Her music now S-U-C-K-S. Everything she does now seems so cheap and gimmicky. Hard to believe she is the same person who released Erotica.

  23. jason says

I don’t know why towleroad keeps telling us about female nudity. Female nudity is not supposed to be appealing to us.

In any case, it just reeks of Madonna’s desperation. She’s had a huge flop with her current album. All her singles have tanked on Itunes. Dear Madge is suffering from attention deprivation syndrome.

  24. says

Miss Henry, Put a stick in it. You don’t have to like her. She doesn’t know you and more than likely DON’T WANT TO!

Her current WORLD TOUR is SOLD OUT Worldwide.
And outside the U.S its a STADIUM TOUR!

For you Gaga Idiots your Mother is is playing arenas.
Madonna if you like her or not……IS THE TOP DOG…BIG MAMA…….
Stay in your lane Monsters! You and GlashGalash isn’t ready for M.D.N.A!!

  25. vanndean says

    WOW!
It is either feast or famine. One is either head over heels for Madonna or who gives a flip.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Can anyone say Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Justin B, Lady G and on and on and on.

  26. Bob says

Her anger at the pope is hilarious. Why, because she can’t deal with her guilt for aborting, like, twelve fetuses. Madonna is a narcissistic sociopath with little talent for anything but working with the right people. The Nile Rodgers quote proved everything I’ve always suspected: smoke and mirrors with an atonal singing voice. And who goes on tour with their children and shows tit? She’s gutter trash from Detroit. I hope her body rots of cancer soon so she can face her mother. She’s beyond mentally ill.

  27. Chitown Kev says

nothing like a Madonna post at towleroad to bring out all of the drama.

hey, if she can do it and get away with it AND look good at 53 doing it then go for it.
