Obama to Halt Deportations of DREAM Act-Eligible Immigrants

President Obama is to announce a new policy granting immunity to young immigrants eligible for the DREAM Act, the AP reports:

ObamaThe policy change, described to The Associated Press by two senior administration officials, will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants who have lived in fear of deportation. It also bypasses Congress and partially achieves the goals of the so-called DREAM Act, a long-sought but never enacted plan to establish a path toward citizenship for young people who came to the United States illegally but who have attended college or served in the military.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano was to announce the new policy Friday, one week before President Barack Obama plans to address the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials' annual conference in Orlando, Fla. Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney is scheduled to speak to the group on Thursday.

Obama planned to discuss the new policy Friday afternoon from the White House Rose Garden.

  1. They are not immigrants; they are illegal aliens and as such, are lawbreakers who should either be deported or imprisoned.

Obama has apparently given up entirely on getting the white middle class to vote for him and is now entirely focused on minorities and is pandering to all of them, including gays (see Panetta video below).

This is bad policy and an overreach of Presidential power and will serve to further alienate Independent swing voters, but I guess Obama's advisors feel they have no choice as the economy continues to falter.

  2. Have a nice speech, Mitt.

  3. They will be here regardless, Rick. Let's document them and tax them on any work they do. Let's document them and force employers to pay them an equal wage; that way, you won't lose a job to someone who is willing to do it for $3/hour in cash. Let's impose harsher penalties on the farming conglomerates and meat processors who continue to hire undocumented labor. Let's invest in the people who we have already given an educated or who have already served this country. Let's not punish a child for the "sins" of his father (isn't that some righty anti-choice talking point, anyway?).

  5. don't forget reagan gave amnesty to millions of immigrants

specifically farm workers for cheap labor

Obama has done the right thing for innocent children + this = tax revenue

The right thing + smart politics

  8. @KPOS I believe in a different approach. Let's enforce the law against employers who hire illegals.....and that will cause all the illegals to leave because they will have no means of financial support. This will force those employers to raise their wage rates to the point where actual American citizens will find them attractive, particularly when nearly a quarter of the citizenry is either unemployed or underemployed.

And these kids are not being "punished" by being deported--they are Mexican culturally and speak Spanish fluently, for the most part, so it will require almost no adjustment on their part if they are sent back to Mexico.

  10. Yes Rick, let's deport minors who were dragged to the US by their parents. Go share your vitriol with GoProud and LCR.

One of my brightest classmates came here at 4 and didn't find out he was illegal until he was 16. Straight A college student. Barely spoke his "native" language. Entered green card marriage...which cost him thousands (not to taxes, but to some lawyer).

  11. I think Obama has given up on being reelected because he's doing so many RIGHT things rather than politically expedient things. Hope he issues an order to stop deportations in the cases of binational same sex relationships.

  14. TO RICK. I agree with KPO5.

Please tax us. Hell even people like me who are private consultants and I don't charge 3$ an hour but 80-100 dollars off the books an hour to implement complete systems in various environments. We didn't ask for this. My parents bought me here from Ecuador because times were bad there in the 90's. Was it our fault that our president mysteriously died after rejecting a US policy to which our currency to american dollars? No, I pity Americans who aren't well informed and alll they doooo is complain. At least american CEO's will hire a person regardless of their status but their quality of work; sadly enough, because all they do is complain, they fail to better themselves and their work.

Long Live. Illegal Immigrants; on our path to regaining back what America has damaged all over the WORLD.

A word of advice from a foreigner; know your current events, and your source should NOT be from American news and television, but the internet, sounds like too much work? Start thinking why 'they' REALLLY want to start censoring the internet with SOPA and PIPA acts...

  16. It's ideal, Rick, but not likely, especially under a potential President like Mitt Romney. Your law would mean we're now forcibly telling meat processors, manufacturers, farming companies, metals corporations, etc., that they are no longer allowed to take on that under-the-table labor. COGS shoots through the roof, you can't pass it all onto the customer, and you've got some very unhappy folks in the board room.

Honest, hardworking illegal immigrants would likely take the opportunity to earn a work permit because they would make a more reasonable wage and have more stability at home. This means, the undocumented labor pool will shrink down to the criminals and older illegals.

    It's bad for business.

And that's why the right is fuming.

  17. @SAY WHAT The states that have passed their own laws to get tough with illegals have been those where Republicans took the initiative--and those laws ARE working, as the exodus of illegals from them demonstrates.

I agree that it is the greed of business interests that has ultimately driven the influx of illegals....and yes, many of those are Republicans...but they are in the minority and if public outrage becomes strong enough, they can do nothing to stop change, as we have seen in the states that have started to clamp down.

It is really sad and deeply misguided for Democrats who claim to care about the economic demise of the middle class and about unemployment to support policies on immigration that are the principle cause of that demise, out of political desperation or a misplaced sense of "compassion".

Up to now, Obama's record on curtailing illegal immigration has actually been pretty good--and better than Dubya's--but this is a step in the wrong direction that will hurt him severely with Independents--who are already drifting away from him....and may be the final nail in his coffin.

  18. Using the same logic of "deferred action," Obama could also grant temporary work permits to binational spouses otherwise in limbo in the USA thanks to DOMA.

I'm not holding my breath but he really should extend this kind of relief to gay binationals.

  20. So the same guy who thinks that if all the effeminate gay men disappeared, homophobia would disappear too, believe that the children of undocumented immigrants should be shipped back to the countries of their parents (even though they'd live their whole lives here).

    Color me unsurprised.

  21. Just curious. If all it takes is a "change of policy" to give status to the illegals, why do they need the Dream Act or support of Congress?

    Posted by: Jacoby | Jun 15, 2012 11:44:19 AM

  22. can you imagine what america would look like if not children of "illegal immigrants" were given a chance?

there'd be no white people. ;-)

yes. closeted insecure homosexuals sure do hate their "brown folks", eh?

oh well. when you live your life in a closet and your entire family hates your guts it's bound to make some people get utterly f***ed up. not all, mind you. many people from bigoted households rise above it, and become rather rad people. others, however, become internet trolls. oh well.

    DREAM ACT ROCKS!

  23. With a policy change, Obama makes things better for those who come to the US illegally. For gay men and lesbians, not so much.

For two years Obama had a Democratic House and Senate. He could have made gay marriage a priority and gotten it done.

(Please donate to the Obama campaign.)

  24. Usually great leaders lead by example.

Great example to set: that ILLEGAL activity is deemed ok at that very highest level.

To me, this has nothing to do about race. It has to do with the LAW. It has to do with national security and our flawed borders. It has to do with all the money illegal immigrants drain from our resources.

This is another reason why I'm not voting for Obama this time around.

Illegals and pretty much all legal Latinos were already going to vote for Obama; all this is going to do is lose him more of the Indepedent vote, which he needs to win. Without it, say hi to President Elect Romney.
