South African Man Beheaded for Being Gay

Makutle

Thapelo Makutle, a 23-year-old trans and gay-identifying man and pageant queen who was recently crowned Miss Gay Kuruman (a city in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, where he lived) and volunteered at the local LGBT rights organization (LEGBO), was murdered and beheaded by two men over his sexuality on Friday.

South Africa's Mamba Online reports:

According to the group Legbo Northern Cape, Thapelo Makutle was attacked at his place of work in the John Taolo Gaetsewe district on Friday. The organisation said that there was an argument related to "his sexuality and homosexuality".

His two attackers are believed to have followed him to the room where he lived and on Saturday cut his throat, decapitating him. They left his body under a blanket as though he were sleeping.

No arrests have been made in connection with the murder.

Said Shaine Griqua, director of Legbo Northern Cape, to Mambaonline: "It's so sad. I can't describe the pain that we are feeling right now. We have lost a young, talented, gay man who was open about who he was. The last few days have been like a dark cloud."

  1. Filthy, heinous, brutal, depraved, abhorrant: words fail me. I know it sounds gloomy but is there a good website about where gay people who are physically and mentally assaulted and murdered are properly enumerated and commemmorated: I would like to be able to link to such a site anytime I am asked about the scale and depth of homophobic violence and murder worldwide.

  10. South Africa has one of the best constitutions in the world when it comes to civil rights, but it's clear that it was imposed top-down after the Apartheid era instead of bring truly supported by the population. A large part of the people hasn't internalized the values it represents.

  11. @daftpunk,

Please...much of Africa is just plain backward, VERY backward. And truth be told, if it wasn't for the Dutch Afrikaners, S.A. would be in far worse shape than it is. Everybody and their brother knows this. It badly lags behind pretty much every other part of the world. The reasons for this are many of course. It's a complicated issue, but it's reality.

  13. ED.... So Africa is the only place something like this would happen? You're right, you do sound fucked up.

  14. No Markus, it's not just the Christians. Its all of those damned organized, brain-washing religions that teach people that if you don't fit into this cookie cutter model that this fictional, man-made book says, then you're different and potentially dangerous and should be treated as such.

  15. CORRECTION Mamba online did not verify facts- used third party information. The victim had her throat slit and did not identify as a gay man BUT RATHER as a TRANS WOMAN. The head was severed about 50%. Nonetheless notwithstanding inaccuracies the horror is as horrific. When someone dies because of their sexuality or gender identity we should honor that person with their true identity.

  16. I gave a speech at Cape Town Pride in 2011. I compared its awesome Constitution which is all inclusive to our lack thereof here in the USA. The theme of my speech was "living the Constitution" which SA have yet to learn to do. One of the greatest problems is unemployment rampant crime rate - fuel to fire scapegoating and homophobia. SA needs a strong educational program to counter the ignorance - which is easily understood on many levels - yet unacceptable.

  17. @ ratbastard:

i don't know why you are addressing your comment to me in particular, since i did not say anything denying that "much of africa" has miles to go in terms of progress for lgbt folks.

and, your comment about afrikaners and sa notwithstanding, i do agree that these are very complex problems.

  18. So tragic. Obviously believing something like this would only happen in South Africa or Africa in general is incorrect, but S.A. is DEFINITELY not an LGBT-friendly place, even with it's civil rights laws in place for LGBT citizens. Such a shame.

  24. Man is such a violent creature .. will we ever as a species, outgrow our pre-disposition to murder one another ?? To evolve into a higher state where hate is erased ? Perhaps not .... it seems to be our fate as it always has ..
